Let me get this straight because I’ve only seen memes and am piecing this together as i go, but i think i figured out what’s happening.

Tumblr is advertising the tumblr app, on the tumblr app, using a photo of a guy in a Pikachu cosplay, because that’s what they think it will take to successfully sell this app, to people whom already use it?

But now the ball shaving ad is gone? Or is that one still in the mix?

I suppose shit like this is why tumblr gave us the option to turn ads back on. Hold on. I’ll be back after i experiment.

I pay tumblr 5$ a month and thus never ever have to see ads whether I’m on browser or app, unless i go in and turn them back on. So my means of learning about Pikachu man was from memes suddenly showing up on my dash one day. So I’ve sort of just been piecing this together as I go. I just think it’s so funny though that most of tumblr saw the ad and y'all are so well trained to never ever ever click on ads, that no one had apparently thought to click the ad to figure out what the heck Pikachu man was trying to sell. Which I’m so proud of y'all! But we sincerely almost let Pikachu man come and go without this bizarrely delightful discovery.

After checking a bunch of tags (both edit tags and general tags, popular and super active or otherwise) and having it confirmed by some other people, it seem that all tags are currently frozen again, like they were back on December 31st and January 1st. No new posts are showing up in the tags as of 1:25PM EST today, January 25th, and I have no idea how long that’ll be the case, as it was a good day or so before it was fixed the last time this happened, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up just in case.

Since approximately 1:30 pm (UTC - 5), not a single post has appeared in any tag. It's like what happened on January first.

Attention Content Creators

There’s a new Situation and because of this Situation I can’t even tag anyone to spread the word. I was recently informed that as of about 18 hrs ago at this point (Jan 1st, 1pm EST) NO NEW POSTS are showing up in ANY tag search on ANY browser/app. I’ve checked this to confirm.

Myself and many others have noticed that posts have been taking a very long time to show up in tags these past fews days (my last post took about 5 hrs). Yesterday around 2pm EST staff reported they were aware of the issue and were working on a fix. This new development appears to have started around 7pm EST, which leads me to believe it’s a result of the “fix” that’s currently in progress. Unfortunately this has made the already bad situation impossibly worse in the meantime.

I have no idea how long this will be an issue but you may want to hold off on posting any new content until it’s sorted out.

PSA regarding tumblr’s latest Censorship Nightmare

For those of you who haven’t seen this announcement, tumblr recently made some changes to the iOS version of the app, purportedly to comply with Apple’s content guidelines. These changes took effect on Dec 21, starting in version 22.5.1 of the iOS app. As some of you may recall, Apple’s strict guidelines were the driving force for the infamous Great Purge of 2018, which coincidentally also happened around this time of year, but it seems banning all of the female-presenting nipples wasn’t good enough for Apple.

Below is a summary of the important changes. Note that these changes technically ONLY affect those using the iOS app. If you’re accessing tumblr through a different app or operating system (Google Chrome, Android app, etc) it won’t affect you directly but it will affect your followers who use iOS so you should definitely be aware of it.

As usual, tumblr was extremely unclear and evasive about all of this in their official announcement. Not surprising, of course, since if more people were aware of these new draconian tactics I can’t imagine there wouldn’t be more of an uproar about it. Tumblr claims that these changes are somewhat temporary and that they are currently working on something that will allow for a less restricted iOS experience, but they refuse to say what that something is and when it will be implemented. And let’s just say, considering their track record, I’m not hopeful.

All of this is horrible and infuriating for many reasons, but the worst part is how insanely counterproductive it is to creating the “safe” environment tumblr (or more specifically Apple) supposedly wants.

Tags have always been used for both blog organization and filtering purposes. Tagging posts with triggers and content warnings is a common practice that gives users the ability to filter out content they may find upsetting or just don’t don’t want to see for whatever reason. By choosing to ban a bunch of unlisted “sensitive content” tags, all they’re doing is encouraging people who want to share that kind of content to come up with alternative less well-known tags or simply not tag that content at all anymore if they want it to show up on their follower’s dashboards, thereby making it more likely for someone to encounter it when they didn’t want to.

So really, with all of the alleged concern for safety and “protecting the children,” all they’ve done is make tumblr less safe for everyone. Typical.

I think this is overdue a proper announcement!

If you're unaware, I'm one of the members of the New XKit team. It's no secret though that New XKit is kinda dead in the water, thanks to Tumblr's overhaul of its interface which broke almost every feature we had. Oh, and everyone else on the team has a day job now, so I decided to take matters into my own hands:

XKit Rewritten is the result of my work of over a year, now available for Firefox and Chrome (and by extension, Edge and Opera too). There are still features to be added, but the featureset has now mostly overtaken the current working featureset of XKit 7.

If you're already an XKit user, I heartily recommend trying the new experience - even if it means configuring everything again - for its improved performance and increased compatibility.

If you're not already an XKit user, I invite you to give it a go! There's probably some option you'll enjoy. Even if you're on your phone all the time, there's a janky way to set it up on Firefox for Android (sorry, iOS users; blame Apple, not me) which I've also detailed on the wiki.
