Nell. Australian. This is my personal blog, so expect: Lots of random movies, tv shows, horror, monsters, aliens, anime, etc. I sometimes post NSFW, body horror, eroticized blood etc; everything is tagged as such.

it wasn't "some reason", it was 2D animators being unionized and 3D not being unionized. and the simple truth that capitalism kills art.

I remember when 2D faded out, the reason studios kept giving was "it's because 2D is a lot more expensive to produce". I was a child back then so I didn't think too much about it, assuming it was about the process itself, but as I grew up and learned more about art as an artist, and gained friends who were professional 3D artists themselves, I started to question it. Because 3D is very different from 2D, but it's definitely not easier or faster to make. Also, both European and Asian studios kept producing 2D animated movies

The answer was unions. The answer wasn't "this kind of art is cheaper because it's easier to make", it was "this kind of art is cheaper because these artists can't force us to pay them correctly"

the thing that people are missing about TLT—what makes it so good and so extremely affirmingly gay—is that it is layered through and through with queer desire of all kinds: Sick desire, wrong desire, desire that will never be voiced let alone fulfilled, desire that CANNOT be spoken of, desires that shouldn’t be fulfilled or run counter to social mores of the setting in ways that are alien to the reader’s own. It is So. Horny. People are horny for corpses. They’re fucking using other peoples’ bodies (without consent). They’re subtextually fucking their siblings. The core homoerotic relationship is a necro/cav relationship, which in the book’s setting, romantic or sexual necro/cav relationships are considered repulsive.

And it will never be fulfilled or consummated in the sense that most people imagine them. Nobody is getting what they want. Girls are kissing girls who are in love with someone else’s corpse. Girls are lobotomizing themselves to save other girls’ souls. Girls are spearing their hearts on iron fences and offering their souls to other girls to eat. They are both profoundly Not Getting Laid and also having intimacies and consumptions that make sucking and fucking seem about as profound as a puddle. The penetration metaphor of Naberius’ death and the bottoming metaphor of Gideon’s cannot be overstated. Someone’s arm is amputated and it’s the closest thing that book has to a sex scene.

And somehow, even though it portrays repression in some cases, it is not Repressed(TM). The girls are Jesus; the girls are reading porn rags; the girls are dying as virgins. Someone tries to fuck a hallucination that is also the ghost of the Devil and also of the Earth. The ghost of the Earth and the Devil says “Huh. One moment, I have to cross time, space, and the River beyond death” and roughly… a day later, fully possesses their body.

Sex doesn’t begin to describe it. It is sublime; it is spiritual; it is as crass and visceral and compulsive as whatever sick pornographies anybody gets off to; it is as grimy and solipsistic and subterranean as any human unconscious.

You simply could not get that in a light and happy “found family! ✨” rainbow sci-fi

Thought I’d share this for the benefit of those who might be under the false impression that fandom is only for the young. This is me. We’d just moved to a new apartment, and I was excited to decorate my room with my latest con purchases. This photo was taken 42 years ago. I’m still here. And with any luck, you’ll be wherever the fans are in another 42 years. With a lot more luck, so will I.

Updated for Star Trek Day 2021. Still kicking.

Since this post is making the rounds again in 2023, I thought I’d update again, this time with some of the ‘70s con programs I saved. It’s now 47 years since that first photo was taken. Still here! (And excited about all the new Star Trek!)

There's lots of talk out there about working through trauma via dark fanfiction. I'm not saying anything against that - there's nothing wrong with it. But I do think there's an unfortunate implication being made in a lot of those posts. Accidentally or not, the implication being made is that trauma is the reason people enjoy dark content. That there needs to be a justification at all.

Guys, trauma is not the only reason to enjoy dead dove do not eat content. You don't need trauma to justify liking it. You don't need anything to justify liking it. You can just...like it. I get the point of those posts is to stop people from harping on others when they might be digging into said trauma, or harassing others for their coping methods, which is definitely wrong - but let's be clear in our intent and not alienate people that are just here for the fun of it. Let's not make people think they need a reason to enjoy what they do.

You don't need trauma to justify liking dark things. You can just like it and if that's all there is to it, that's perfectly okay.

horror movies, serial killer documentaries, splatterhouse-type games, etc - these are billion-dollar industries

there is a real, valid, profitable part of the human psyche that loves dark shit when it’s in a situation we can control

what do you think is the appeal of roller coasters? danger, controlled

i don’t give one single solitary shit what your particular dark fic itch is. seriously, i don’t care. it doesn’t matter. yes, even whatever super gross objectionable thing you just thought of - it literally doesn’t matter. unless real, live, non-hypothetical people are hurt in the making of a thing, that’s just how humans be. sometimes we gaze into the abyss, to see if we can handle it when the abyss gazes back.

GLaDOS is literally the funniest character ever. Her arc culminates in her saying "I hate you so much it's not even worth the trouble of killing you, so just fucking LEAVE. And on your way out here's a full choir to sing 'Goodbye My Darling,' an Aria I wrote in Italian about how I love you and want you to be safe, which mentions you by name. Don't read into it. Get the fuck out. And here, something to remember me by: a box with a heart on it. Leave." to a woman who has literally never responded to anything she's ever said

I know a lot of people are gonna be like "uhhh Chell is fully nonverbal! She CAN'T respond!" to which I'd point out two things

  1. We don't have confirmation on that, we (and GLaDOS) just assume it because she never talks. For all we know she's just stubborn and refuses to give any of these robots the satisfaction of responding
  2. Nonverbal people are still capable of responding when spoken to, and Chell literally never does. No thumbs up, no nod, no acknowledgement the other person has even spoken. When given instructions by Wheatley, she never actually does what she's asked.

Now, my point here is not to argue that Chell can hear them and just chooses not to respond. Quite the opposite. My point here is to propose that Chell is fully Deaf and neither GLaDOS nor Wheatley ever realized she couldn't hear them. You (the player) can hear everything that's happening but think about that game, and how easily one could complete it without audio or subtitles.

Maybe Chell is just fully on top of the situation, MacGyver-ing her way through this laboratory to escape, blissfully unaware of the fact that the robots trying to kill her are also projecting insecurities and psychosexual obsession onto her
