I was born in 1989, reinvented for the first time in 2014, and a part of me was reclaimed in 2023 with the re-release of this album I love so dearly. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the magic you would sprinkle on my life for so long.
We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren't—right this minute—about to make some fateful life-altering mistake. This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching—hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve ... we'll meet ourselves.
I think what I’ve learned over the past few years is that, there’s always a common denominator in all of my roles, where I want them to be very strong, independent women. But recently, as time has gone by and as I get older, I’ve realised that the strongest women are often the most broken, or the people who deal with the most hardship. What would you say to that type of concern that it suggests to girls “stick with that abusive boyfriend, maybe you could fix it”?
It’s such a good question and it’s something I really grappled with at the beginning; the kind of Stockholm Syndrome question about this story. So, I did some reading about Stockholm Syndrome. That’s where a prisoner will take on the characteristics of and fall in love with, in this sort of really strange way, the captor. Belle actively argues and disagrees with him constantly. She has none of the characteristics of someone with Stockholm Syndrome because she keeps her independence, she keeps her independence of mind. And I also think that there is a very intentional switch where in my mind Belle decides to stay. - Emma Watson
