Now, several Democratic operatives and insiders tell Rolling Stone they tried to convince the Harris campaign and her allies that palling around with the Cheneys was a bad idea with little upside — and could harm Harris’ support among disaffected Democratic voters. The sources requested anonymity to discuss sensitive intraparty matters. One source close to the Harris campaign tells Rolling Stone they reached out to several staffers in and around the campaign to voice concerns about the candidate embracing Dick and Liz Cheney.  “People don’t want to be in a coalition with the devil,” says the source, speaking about Dick Cheney. They say a Harris staffer responded that it was not the staff’s role to challenge the campaign’s decisions. 

Another Democratic operative close to Harrisworld says they sent memos and data to Harris campaign staffers underscoring how, among other things, Republican voters, believe it or not, vote Republican — and that the data over the past year screamed that Democrats instead needed to reassure and energize the liberal base and Dem-leaning working class in battleground states. “We were told, basically, to get lost, no thank you,” says the operative.  A Harris spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Moderate Republicans broke heavily for President-elect Trump despite the efforts of opponents such as Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney. Trump carried Republicans who didn’t identify as a "MAGA Republican" 74%-22% nationwide in Tuesday’s election, according to Fox News voter analysis. The result comes as Vice President Kamala Harris spent much of the last few weeks of the campaign making an appeal to moderate Republicans, hoping to siphon off votes from members of the party who have typically attempted to distance themselves from Trump and his "Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement."

Harris had campaigned with the former GOP congresswoman in crucial swing states, including Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Georgia State Representative Ruwa Romman, a Democrat who is Palestinian, said it was a "mistake" for Harris to campaign with Cheney. "Liz Cheney, Geoff Duncan and others were never going to bring voters," Romman wrote on X (formerly Twitter), referring to the former GOP lieutenant governor of Georgia who campaigned against Trump. Romman went on: "They don't have a base. Prioritizing billionaires and republicans instead of progressive orgs who do deep organizing work was a huge mistake. They're the ones who push back on right wing disinformation. "Instead they were iced out and maligned. This was supposed to be a historic moment but many tonight are reeling and terrified of what comes next. All of us lose tonight. All of us. There's nothing good that will come of this," she said.

Candidates for office can’t control who endorses them. But they can control how they respond. Back in 2020, the white supremacist Richard Spencer endorsed Joe Biden for president, likely in an attempt to troll the campaign—and Biden’s team immediately rejected his support, with spokesperson Andrew Bates calling Spencer “absolutely repugnant” and “10,000% unwelcome here.” That would have been the proper response to Cheney, who is a far more insidious figure than Spencer ever dreamed of being. Instead, Kamala Harris and her advisors have chosen to welcome Cheney into the Democratic Party’s “big tent,” which seems to have endless room for right-wing monsters, but precious little for leftists. Now, the question becomes: if you accept Dick Cheney’s help to win an election, whose support won’t you accept? Where is the moral floor?
