OC Prompts #4 - Thaumaturgy
We're at Thaumaturgy Thursday!
Whether you call it thaumaturgy, blood sorcery, or oopy goopy magic time, we're celebrating it! Banu Haqim and Tremere characters should get a chance to shine, as well as any other clever Kindred who have managed to barter/steal the secrets of blood sorcery.
I will also suggest Sigils In The Dark for folks who love spooky magic. It's a journaling game where you create and draw different magic sigils, to fill your evil spellbook. The game itself lacks a defined narrative, but the physical process of drawing sigils can be really fun and meditative... and might be helpful to get into the mind-set for a thaumaturge type character 👍
Character questions:
- What is your OC's focus with their sorcery? Is there a particular "path" or type of spell/ritual they lean towards? What kinds of things would they want to learn, and what is preventing them from achieving that power?
- For Tremere characters, what is their relationship with the Pyramid? do they miss the structure and resources it provided? are they grateful for the freedom? or are they one of the few who still have a Chantry to call "home"?
Ohhhh boy. So Nyth was a Tremere when I first made and played him (the green path), but when I joined a v5 game I reflavored him for alchemy. So was Godwynn, my Ventrue Antitribu. Godwynn’s power set is unchanged actually since he practiced counter-thaumatergy. May have diablerized a warlock or two. They are also his favorite thing to hunt. Basically, I love thaumatergy and blood magic stuff. The drama that can come from a room full of sigils written in blood is *chef's kiss*
I want to talk a little more in depth about Nyth's sire Sebastián and his primary path, The Green Path. Sebastián was a florist and botanist in life. Naturally, the geen path called to him as he began his studies in the greater occult. He fit right into the chantry, excelling and obtaining the rank of high apprentice of the sixth circle. He answered directly to the magisters of his chantry. He experimented with ghouling plants. In one complicated ritual, he bound a ghoul rose to his heart. The rose fed off a small mount of his vitae and lives inside him. With the powers of the green path, he could animate the rose into weapons or even have it act independently to protect him. He, however, learned that it may not have been the most foolproof plan. One night, Nyth shoved a stake in Sebastián's heart. The rose reacted violently to the stake, ripping apart Sebastián from the inside out like a plant based meat grinder. The only thing Nyth could recover from his sire was a pocket knife with a rose motif.
