Kylo Ren’s Imperial March
So, one of my absolute favorite little musical Easter Eggs in this movie happens within the very first 5 minutes. Kylo’s Entrance + Vader’s Theme = Love!
As Kylo Ren exits his ship after arriving at the village on Jakku, he strides down the ramp, flanked by 2 Stormtroopers, one on each side, just behind the whip of his robe. In a nod to Darth Vader’s entrance style, and to begin to lay down the story of Kylo Ren’s admiration for his Grandfather, though the audience is not aware of it yet, a slightly more elongated and embellished version of the final notes from “The Imperial March” is played.
Here’s the original ending of The Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back:
Here is the music that accompanies Kylo’s entrance to the film:
This new version outlines the same minor 3rd interval found in the original music from The Empire Strikes Back, but the pitches are transposed up one half step, and serve as different scale degrees in their given keys. The “Imperial March” outlines the tonic and the submediant (1st and 6th scale degrees) of the key, g minor, giving the last cadence a solid finality, as resolute and devoted as Darth Vader was to the Empire. The quote found in “The Attack on the Jakku Village” outlines the dominant and mediant (5th and 3rd scale degrees) of the key, c# minor. While these pitches are strong chord tones in the given key, outlining non-tonic pitches over and over, and then finally arriving on the root pitch at the very end, gives the motif a “borrowed” feel.
It’s as if the idea has been partially fleshed out, but just doesn’t quite fit comfortably. This closely emulates the way Kylo Ren attempts to carry on his “Grandfather’s legacy”, but still harbors personal doubt and opposition along the way, struggling to make everything “fit”.
