Taash: So you and Rook are a thing? Lucanis: Why? Taash: You should pop out the wings while you're with him. Lucanis: Really. Taash: Everyone loves flying. Lucanis: You like flying. It's more of your thing about dragons. Taash: (Grunts casually) Your call. Lucanis (Spite): Want to? Fly like a dragon? Taash: Do you think you could? Lucanis: No.

Hey, can Rook have a vote on the wing situation? Because Percy at least would be extremely down for Lucanis popping out the wings in any and all situations. Not that he has a thing about wings (at least Lucanis's wings) or anything like that. Shush. Anyway I think Lucanis should at least ask Rook about the wings, if only because it'd be a fun conversation.

I also love how Spite is clearly into the idea, I can understand why Lucanis occasionally gets upset about the others giving Spite ideas given the number of times Spite's like "Hey can we do this" and Lucanis tells him no. Also Taash just assuming that Rook would probably have a thing for flying as part of their dragon thing is so funny, I love them.

Harding: Emmrich. If you liked someone, what would you do? To show you liked them, I mean. Emmrich: Perhaps a stroll through the Memorial Gardens of the Necropolis? Lovely flowers. Harding: Don't... you know, spirits hang around there? Emmrich: Oh, a few, certainly.

This becomes kind of hilarious when you remember that Emmrich's first outing is in fact a stroll through the Memorial Gardens of the Necropolis. I'm not actually sure if it's better if you're romancing him or not. Either way I'm just imagining Rook standing there listening to this like "Uh... Emmrich? Is there something you want to tell me?"

Cyrian: The Evanuris... Solas... they would sacrifice us to their ends.

...Anaris is turning people into demons. How exactly is that not sacrificing elves for his own ends? Cyrian, I know Anaris is messing with your emotions and all but please think about what you're saying.

Lucanis: A big [party]. [Illario]'s hosting all the Talons of the Crows at Caterina's villa. Rook: Poor Viago. He hates big social gatherings. Lucanis: Teia will be thrilled, though. Rook: Oh, of course. Any excuse to break out her formal knives.

I love de Riva and Lucanis talking about Viago and Teia. The reminder that they all know each other is so fun. Also there's something cute about de Riva's first response being "Oh poor Viago's going to hate that". I mean yeah Illario's planning a coup having betrayed his family, getting Lucanis possessed and imprisoning Caterina, but poor Viago! He hates parties! De Riva can love their dad Talon so much and I am so ready to read the entire de Riva & Viago tag on Ao3 as soon as I finish the game. I also love the acknowledgement that Teia will have a blast. Of course she has formal knives. Teia deserves to go to all the fancy parties. Although I am disappointed that there's no formal wear at the opera... Come on, let the Talons get dressed up all fancy. Let the party get dressed up all fancy. I want a fancy dress quest where we aren't dressed like nutcrackers and having to be nice to Orlesians please Bioware.

ok just finished the final quest for Lucanis and like... this is what I mean about the Lucanis/Neve thing and how it should have been Neve/Bellara

Bioware makes no effort of convincing us of this relationship being legit beyond very easily missable cutscenes (i.e. the cutscene where Lucanis out of nowhere is making a dessert for Neve which you can easily miss if you have a flirtation with Lucanis active). They don't seem to have any interactions as friends. And in my playthrough, literally the first I'm hearing that Lucanis has any remote interest in a relationship with Neve is just now, after 100+ hours of gameplay, he is listing the people he cares about, and mentions Neve's name.

Before this, the literal only interaction beyond party banter is a scene where he confronts her about brewing coffee wrong where he's overreacting and she's dismissive. It doesn't read as flirtation unless you squint. And then you're confronted with the choice between Minrathous and Treviso and there's a tense understanding between them. And I'm someone who would go to the Lighthouse after every side quest to see what banter was happening, and maybe it's unlucky coincidence, but even then, I never found the two of them specifically having idle banter around the Lighthouse.

And this isn't a critique on either Neve or Lucanis bc I adore them both, but this really is the most heteronormative "because they were both there" ship I have seen. It's like if Mass Effect decided that, if you romance Liara, they're gonna put Ashley and Kaidan together.

And idk if someone actually enjoys their dynamic I won't take that away from you, but it's really just not a convincing relationship in my opinion.

(and before u say "oh you like Lucanis ofc you don't want him with Neve" like, there's actually other relationships for Lucanis which feel like they have a more natural build-up like Davrin or Harding, and ones with Neve which also have a more natural build-up like Bellara or also Harding--who I just ship with everyone actually)

Rook: Wait. Did you make dessert just for me? Lucanis: There's enough for everyone. Rook: As long as they don't mind having it with my favourite drink. Lucanis: They won't complain. Rook: You didn't have to do anything special for me. Lucanis: Yes, I did. I still don't know how to apologize for... everything. And you... Rook: You made dessert! Just for me! Lucanis: It's nothing. Or not enough. Rook: It is. And you are. And I'll have you know, I'm very easily bribed. Lucanis: I'll keep that in mind.

ROMANCE LOCKED IN. Although I won't lie, it's kind of funny to me that the lock in for Lucanis's romance does not involve any clear discussion of romantic feelings. I'm told Emmrich's romance at least actually involves a proper talk about your feelings at the lock in point and here's Lucanis expressing emotions through cooking. Which is very cute and romantic, don't get me wrong, but also... hey uh guys this isn't actually a declaration of feelings. There also aren't any kisses, this is it. Mechanically it's locked in but in-universe they Have Not Discussed It. Which also makes the fact that this is where the romance banter starts triggering kind of hilarious. It's never been discussed but everyone knows it's a thing anyway!

To be very clear none of this is a complaint, I am loving the slow burn, it's just also a little funny to me. Tune into the next romance scene where presumably they will actually discuss their feelings like adults and maybe kiss please Bioware my poor guy hasn't had a single kiss in 60 hours and he is bereft, bereft I tell you.

Teia: Rook, are you all right? Viago: What's the matter with the two of you? Rook: It's okay. We needed a moment, but I'd say we're ready for anything. How long were we standing here? Teia: Just long enough for it to get awkward. You're sure you're all right? Lucanis: We're fine, Teia. Don't waste your worry on us.

Poor Teia and Viago having to just awkwardly stand there while Rook and Lucanis have their little moment, staring off into space. I'm just imagining them glancing at Rook and Lucanis and then back at each other and back to Rook and Lucanis like "Uh... what's going on here".

The Sacrifice of Souls, Part 1

alt title: the completely surmountable issue of dying

welcome to my 2-part essay about the conclusion of emmrich's story line. this part will focus on the actual quest(s) involved and analyze the decisions we make. part two will be about the effects on the romance, particularly as i am approaching it with my rook, corentin.

spoilers ahead! beware that both essays are going to assume you have completed The Sacrifice of Souls and at least one of the follow up quests, Heir to the Dead or Will and Testament. if you have not, i suggest returning to this later and playing it out yourself.

so what are we even talking about?

for my purposes, about 90% of the sacrifice of souls is irrelevant. here are the important bits: hezenkoss puppets a giant skeleton monster powered by the gloaming lantern, manfred sacrifices himself to rip it out of the thing's chest, and emmrich risks his life to free the souls trapped inside, symbolically overcoming his fear of death (for the moment).

when manfred's beautiful skeleton body is brought before the lich lords in the necropolis to ask if his spirit can be recovered, the lich lords give an ultimatum: they will allow emmrich to bring manfred back, but it will remove his candidacy for lichdom.

"how many exceptions 'til tyranny?" they say. if emmrich is to become a lich, he must be able to accept that people he cares about will die as he lives on.

emmrich is obviously extremely conflicted. he's being forced to choose between his life's work or having his pseudo-child back; he is torn because he at once wishes to spare himself the pain of losing someone, while also wanting to "honour death and let him rest."

from there, the choice is given to the player: encourage emmrich to bring manfred back, or encourage him to pursue his life's work and become a lich.

I think the choice becomes less contradictory if you think of it less as asking Emmrich to decide whether his death or Manfred's should be accepted as natural and more as making Emmrich face what becoming a lich will actually mean. I mean, in that banter with Lucanis you linked Emmrich is... honestly really dismissive of the fact that becoming a lich will mean watching everyone he loves die and everything he loves wither; like he says himself, he hasn't really considered that aspect of it. He'll move forward and meet new people and see new things, and while he's probably aware that it'll be sad watching those people and things inevitably fade I really don't think he's considered the full weight of watching that happen over and over again forever. It's not so much about Manfred specifically, he's just the most obvious (and uh. expendable) character to use. It's about Emmrich really having to consider that being a lich means standing back and letting the people he loves die to uphold the cycle of life and death, knowing he can save them and making the active choice to do nothing, and he will be expected to do that with everyone he loves, forever. Is lichdom worth that pain to him? Is he even capable of doing it? It's easy to say he can, but when the choice is actually laid out before him it's more difficult. I think the problem really is that that only really comes up in banter; the choice would feel a lot stronger if Rook could raise that concern and discuss it with him in conversation, if only to make sure that that angle is established even for people who never take Emmrich and Lucanis out together.

Spite: Make. Him. Leave. Rook: He's trying to leave, Spite. It's... complicated. Mortals can't just change ourselves. It takes a lot of time.

I'm so here for Spite not understanding how trauma works. It's an interesting look at possession and spirits/demons; Spite really does care about Lucanis in his own way and he really does want to help, but he has no idea how to help or even what's wrong. All he can see is that Lucanis isn't leaving the Ossuary in his mind. It honestly might be my favourite look at how spirits just... experience these things differently. Spite assumes that Lucanis is choosing to stay where he is because he doesn't understand that it's not a choice, not really. And I also love how he clearly knows he can't help Lucanis and goes to Rook to get their help; he seems to be assuming that Lucanis is just actively refusing to listen to him and goes to them because Lucanis always listens to them rather than because he realizes this is a serious issue that he's not equipped to deal with, but him recognizing that this is something he needs help with and going to someone he's sure can and will help is very nice!

And it's also just nice to see a spirit in general and an abomination in particular being treated so well by the narrative, honestly. Spite's not looking at this like a normal person would, sure, but the narrative makes it clear that he's not malicious; he doesn't understand and he's pissed at the perceived betrayal but he doesn't mean Lucanis any real harm and he enlists Rook in the whole thing because he wants to help. Going from Spite seeming like a danger to Lucanis to seeing him as someone who means well but doesn't understand the situation is such a fun thing, I love it.
