I used to do cross country in high school, and there was this guy on the team that was wonderful. Great guy. But his advice to everyone that asked how to get good was to run 20k a day.
If you don't run, I'll just tell you, most people's bodies cannot take that kind of abuse. No matter how much you train, you will not be able to run 20k a day. It's like how you can't train to make your cuts heal faster. You recover as fast as you recover. So while a big part of what made this guy so succesful was the dedication and mental toughness needed to actually run 20k a day, an equally big part was that he healed like fucking Wolverine. And that's fine, but it would've been nice if he knew that and stopped telling new guys to commit suicide by jogging.
Different guy on the team ran like, 5-6k a day, which actually isn't all that much. His problem when he gave advice was that he didn't really get that 5-6k a day doesn't generally produce elite results for most people. He was lucky in the sense that he didn't have to work all that hard to get great results, and unlucky in the sense that if he pushed himself much further than that, he fell apart.
I think about those two whenever I get advice from succesful people. The very things that make them outliers also make their advice useless to most people. Worse, they're often outliers on totally separate ends of the same spectrum, so their advice will be contradictory.
Cross Country Tip!
The forests are a wonderful place to both lose yourself and find yourself in
Don’t let Big Road fool you. You aren’t supposed to look both ways before crossing. Close your eyes and trust in God that he will guide you to salvation.
Hey! Lava ankle anon here!! Been trying to do more leg workouts, but it's harder finding ones for calves and ankles- my thighs are the strongest part of my body, but most of leg workouts focus on those, which Isnt what I'm looking for. Any workouts you recommend so I can actually run efficiently?
swimming! helps to work out and strengthen the muscles without putting impact on them like running does
I ran a 5k today (and PRed! but that's not the point) and in the last like 500m...
it felt barely human. I was a hungry beast. I was so tired. I was ready to stop running. But I made it to the finish line!
I don't know where I was going with this, but have an ask.
we've all been there
Hi there! I just found your blog not to long ago and figured this would be a good place to ask.
So currently, I just quit running xc after 4 years (2jr high 2high) since the stress from meets became too much. I was wondering if it would be okay for me to still wear my varsity jacket? I feel like I've put in enough work to earn it, but at the same time I feel like people will see it as me trying to cling on to something I'm not a part of (if that makes sense?)
Sorry if this is a bit much, feel free to delete this :)
yes!!! wear that shit!!! you earned it!!!!
glad you’re back for xc season <3 huge 40 second pr today
yes!!!!! proud of you!!!!
trail banana today!!!
Behind The Lens: Sharp Top 50k/25k
Sharp Top 50k/25k for 2024 was shaping up to be a doozy well before the race even happened. The race directors and volunteers pulled out all the stops just to make sure this race could actually happen this year. The race takes place in the forest surrounding the ghost town of Masten, PA. It is a very remote area. There are few roads in and out of the area and few races to take to get around the…
Today’s fellow trail “runner”.
I've run a really slow 5.2k this morning, and I loved it :)
It was a small charity race with a beautiful course that goes past old windmills.
According to the event website, I finished in 42 minutes.
I could not even run through the whole thing, I had to stop after 33min 37sec (then I walked, and then ran some more). But I'm kind of proud that I even lasted for that long, because 1) I am not used to running uphill for long, which I had to do here, and 2) I almost always run in the evening or late afternoon, and for this event, I had to get up at 4:45 and leave the house at 5:30. (My metabolism is slow, it only decided to wake up and get things moving during the last km of the race, from which point on I was running for my dignity, if you know what I mean :D )
All in all, it was a lovely race with super kind organizers and volunteers, it was fun!
we love and congratulate you (◕ᴗ◕✿)
this bitch finally ran a trail again, lads
