I swear if I see another “Amazon owns Twitch so this is the same thing what’s the big deal, you already support Amazon so stop being hypocritical” post… that is NOT the point. This is about backing Jeff Bezos directly as a choice, where Twitch is a common and free platform one NEEDS to use, like they also use YouTube, to get the content out there for free.
A million dollar contract deal is massively different than utilizing a common platform the general public is forced to use out of necessity. This deal was NOT a necessity. They wanted to make more Critical Role animated content, and instead of being proud of what we created as a community, they shook the hand of a tax-evading devil to make more of what they want. They prioritized more Critical Role content over morals.
I KNOW the world isn’t black and white. I know they aren’t suddenly evil people, and I don’t suddenly hate them! I’m not canceling them, I’m not trying to create some kind of shitty war against them. I’ve seen that shit before it gets ugly fast. However, I just can’t believe just how celebrated this choice is. I can’t believe how accepting everyone is of this as if this was inevitable.
I don’t feel happy. I feel defeated. This feels like a defeat. Proof that we will NEVER be able to overcome the corporate greed that comes from corrupt abuse of capitalism, because if a fandom who donated over 11 MILLION DOLLARS wasn’t enough for them, then nothing will ever be enough. This is a cycle that will continue in the country until Amazon/Disney/Google rules the fucking world.
Money makes you greedy, it makes you want more. Whether that’s more money, more content, or more people to see your content and give you money. It all just feeds into this disgusting system, and I thought this Kickstarter could fight that system. I thought it was a pure sign of people as individuals coming together to make something good of themselves.
But it wasn’t enough… 11 million dollars wasn’t fucking enough. Nothing will ever be “enough” under corrupt capitalism.
