Castiel could feel her eyes on him, even though he wasn’t facing her. The behaviors of humans were still mostly confusing and unfamiliar to him, but thanks to Dean, he knew about the concept of personal space and how staring is impolite. It was the first time he’d been alone with Y/N in the bunker, so he could understand her curiosity; he’d been away for several months on angel business. He was trying to keep his attention on the lore book in front of him, but after fifteen minutes straight of dealing with it, he gave in.
“Can I help you, Y/N?”
Shaking herself out of her daze, she ducked her head. “No. Sorry. Didn’t mean to stare.”
“It seemed quite purposeful,” Castiel observed, “since you’ve been on the same page of your book for almost thirty minutes.”
“Okay, fine,” she replied, closing her book and tossing it on the ottoman. “I’ve never talked to a nice angel before and I just… where are your wings? Do they fold up? Are they invisible? Do they make flappy noises? Do they have bones? Are they hollow like an actual bir—”
“Y/N.” Castiel’s stern voice made her mouth slam shut with an audible click. “You could have just asked.”
“Sorry, I didn’t know if they were some kind of taboo subject. Like, if they were considered,” her voice dropped to a whisper, “sexual.”
“They are not inherently sexual. Angels are able to see the wings of other angels, but touching and grooming is another story, done only by good friends or mating partners. Since we are merely celestial energy inside a vessel, our wings are on a different plane and are invisible to the human eye due to the wavelength of light.” Castiel spun around in his chair to face her. “I can manifest them, but you will only be able to see the shadow.”
