'Supergirl' Renewed But Moving to The CW: What Does This Mean For The Show?
Written by Creator Stephen Patterson on Creators.co
According to Entertainment Weekly, Supergirl has been renewed for a second season, but will be moving from CBS to The CW. The series, which stars Glee's Melissa Benoist, will be flying over to The CW, where it will join Greg Berlanti's other superhero series - Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
But what does this mean for the Girl of Steel? The jump to The CW will open up several doors that had previously been closed, but it may also raises several problems.
More Cross-overs with the Arrowverse
During it's first season on CBS, Supergirl did crossover with The Flash, but it was made clear from the beginning of the series that the character of Supergirl does not exist in the Arrowverse. The main reasoning behind this is the fact that including Supergirl would lead to a necessary inclusion of Superman, who doesn't exist in the Arrowverse. In the crossover, The Flash travelled to an alternative earth, which is where he met Supergirl. Moreover, Supergirl had previously been filmed in Los Angeles - this move means that it will now be filmed in Vancouver along with The Flash and Arrow. The closer sets means that more crossovers will be inevitable.
Target Audience
The tone of Supergirl mirrors the tone of the other products in the Berlanti-verse. Moving the show to the same network as these beloved shows will allow Supergirl to target the audience that it was originally intended for. In the UK, all four shows are broadcast on Sky1 and are marketed as a pack. The CW's marketing team will most likely adopt a similar marketing campaign - promoting the four superhero shows in one promo.
Calista Flockhart
Calista Flockhart is one of the best things about Supergirl. Her presence on the show not only adds comic relief to the dire situations, but her presence in Supergirl's life is vital to her character development. With the show moving to Vancouver, one cannot help but wonder if Flockhart will commute to the new location. The finale did set up that Cat Grant wouldn't see Kara every day now that she is no longer her assistant, but a Supergirl show without Flockhart doesn't feel right. I hope Flockhart will make the move.
Supergirl's renewal means that we now have confirmation of a resolution from the cliffhanger left at the end of Season One. In theory, the move to The CW will allow the show more creative freedom now that it is among super friends!
