8 of The Most Beautiful Romantic Films You Might Have Missed in 2015

Cinderella2015 was an interesting year for the romance genre. We had a wide array of movies showing a variety of unconventional romantic stories (and the genre hybrids were quite good too). While I'm certain that they all had something new to bring to the table, the cynic in me just avoided stereotypical plots and movies with catastrophic ratings from critics and Rotten Tomatoes.

On Valentines' Day, I'm pretty sure Deadpool is going to be one heck of a unique love story as you can see imagine.

Having said that, perhaps not all couples could enjoy a movie date - or there are singletons just dying to watch a relatively new movie available on Netflix, iTunes or Blu-ray and spend Valentines' weekend watching at the comfort of their own homes.

I haven't seem every romance film from 2015, however those that I watched are remarkable and here are 8 of my picks:

Trainwreck

Trainwreck is a surprising pick for me. I only even watched it becayse I wanted to know why people are smitten with Amy Schumer or why John Cena is suddenly becoming an annoying meme.

Frankly, I never found Amy Schumer downright hilarious or Trainwreck that great. Seriously, if you've never seen this it's just about a sexual girl named Amy, a trainwreck who finally finds love. Because she doesn't believe in true love, she keeps being an arse even to nice people and believes that she doesn't deserve their kindness. And like the movie's tagline says, we all know a trainwreck.

Paper Towns

It's up here in my list, and I haven't even read the book yet! You've done it again, John Green. This movie's cool and I'm slightly envious that I would never have a teenage life that is full of fun and mysterious adventures. The movie is more than just about the search for your love - it's ultimately about finding yourself; finding who you are and developing into who you thought you'd never be - even if this discovery comes from trying to find a person who didn't even want to be found.

Brooklyn

Saoirse Ronan is one of my favorite actresses. Her maturity and emotional depth shone in Brooklyn. I've never been in her character's situation before (about the love thing), but I do feel her homesickness. Even if you're happy where you are at present, it really could get a bit tedious when you're away from home and constantly find yourself worrying about the people you left behind.

Far from the Madding Crowd

Based on Thomas Hardy's book of the same name, Far from the Madding Crowd is a great period romance & drama film. It's also one of the best classic book-to-film adaptation (my favorite since 2011's Jane Eyre). Not to spoil anything, but prominent in this story is the madding crowd. And a human's stubborn indecision and shortsightedness to see the good that's right in front of us for the entire time. Also, those who can wait for you, no matter how messed up you've become are worth letting back in.

Cinderella

This movie was just an homage to the 1950's Disney classic, but it was good nonetheless. The animated version will leave you confused as to how the prince could be in love with Cinderella when he only met her once. This movie graciously explains what possibly captured Charming's heart. There's magic and romance - and it emphasizes that wit, intelligence, courage and kindness are ultimately an even bigger asset than beauty alone.

The Age of Adaline

Age of Adaline is heaven-sent. I've seen a TV mini-series with this kind of story (in the Philippines) way back in 2010. Adaline is just a full-on elegantly executed chick flick. You could nitpick it, but you can't hate it. It's also a movie good for discussion because of the elaborate and complex backstory for Adaline, but amidst the science and history stuff - it's just a simple story of a woman who wouldn't age and just tries to survive for her daughter. Because apparently, falling in love with someone and not being able to grow old with them is just heartbreaking and pointless.

Carol

It's so rare for romance movies to leave an impact on me (especially if there are no magic and mystery involved). I either have a cold heart or just doesn't have an affinity in watching downfalls of heterosexual relationships. However in the end, I only have this to say after watching the movie: The truth will set you free - and love wins eventually, as it should be.

Crimson Peak

This Gothic-romance film is the absolute best. And as the cast have said, it's every favorite thing of Guillermo del Toro all packed in one. Gorgeous setting and scenery with an equally captivating story. There are movies that will inthrall you from the first moment you see it, and this is one of them. It's all about different kinds of love - and depending on your mindset, how it could victimize us all. In Crimson Peak, the ghosts are just metaphors to the past, though they add a layer of mystique to the story. Our heroine, Edith, is on a quest on how long she could hold on to save herself from the Sharpes. Her ghost mama had warned her about Crimson Peak when she was a child but she didn't understand it until it was almost too late. In the end, courage, strength and love saved her from what could have been her poetic (and tragic) end.

2015. The year of the female in cinema, the year of the interesting take on the horror genre, the resurgence of the sci-fi movie and the sequel. It was the year of some amazing cinema, and it was great to see some truly incredible pieces throughout both the local cinema scene and the film festival circuit.
