Backstory:

The idea for this haiku came fron the ongoing cyclone Amphan in Bengal and the migration of workers and labourers from cities to their home villages during this pandemic in India. I really hope things get better.

I took that photo two years back while cycling in the countryside in West Bengal.

​Hey guys there’s a new Marathi langblr called @survivetoread​ and they just got started.

I know the “Indo” part of the Indo-European family is LARGELY neglected in the langblr community, so if some of you are looking for something a little different to study maybe give Marathi a try! And it shouldn’t be too hard to pick up for those of you who are used to other Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi/Udru or Bengali. Also, like its cousins, it sounds very pretty and is written in a beautiful script, and boasts an extensively rich history and culture.

Bonus points: it is a generally open language, and yet isn’t given much attention! So new learners are more than welcome, you’ll be learning a language that not many people (outside of India/Marathi diaspora) know, and you won’t be stepping on the toes of closed communities!

'Learn Bengali with a native', lesson 2 on Consonants

It includes all the original 32 consonants along with 3 post reform consonants, along with pronunciation guide and examples.

I've started a YouTube series called 'Learn Bengali with a native', for those of you interested in learning the language.

This is the first episode on the Bengali Alphabet (বর্ণমালা), it contains an introduction to the alphabet along with a pronunciation and writing guide for all the vowels. Hope that helps.

About the occasion:

Pôhelā Boiśākh (Bengali: পহেলা বৈশাখ) or Bānglā Nôbobôrṣo (Bengali: বাংলা নববর্ষ) is the first day of Bengali Calendar. It is celebrated on 14 April as a national holiday in Bangladesh, and on 14 or 15 April in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Northern Odisha and parts of Assam by people of Bengali heritage, irrespective of their religious faith.

How to wish:

You can wish by saying, śubho nôbobôrṣo! (Happy New Year), or pôhelā boiākher śubhecchā roilo (Greetings on First day of Boiśhākh). You might like to do a little nômôskār pose while greeting people😄🙏.

How to celebrate:

• Greet everyone!☺️

• Might like praying for a good and prosperous year.

• Good time to try Bengali fashion! Sāri, Dhuti, Pānjābi...

• Listen to traditional Bengali songs and watch folk dances.

• Watch Jātrā (a form of Bengali theatrical art)

• Eat mouthwatering Bengali cuisine🤤 (with lots of sweets and desserts).

I have been feeling like an idiot these few days because of something at school. Better not to reveal the situation.

Anyway, Dad and I (and the driver) went on a road trip to Assam for educational purposes. We bought some food stuff and aquarium accessories on the way back.

I love road trips, you can truly understand the culture of a place that way. Only negative points are the roads... India and it's wonderful roads(not, unless in some places).
