This started as a joke but now I can't help but imagine Merlin's magic as some kind of sentient little creature.

Like, Merlin is still magic itself but imagine a small golden glowing dragon following him around trying to persuade him into shenanigans. When Merlin doesn't comply, he's being tripped. The dragon also loves Arthur and keeps playing around with his stuff.

Pre-magic reveal, no one can see the dragon but Merlin. Post magic-reveal, everyone sees it.

I mean, sure this would also work with Aithusa but imagine that this tiny creature is the whole source of Merlin's power and he has to keep the tiny thing satisfied unless it decides to go feral and actually eat people.

Like venom! But golden, cute and adorable. But like venom XD
