I definitely can’t go to work unless my heart tells me I’m allowed. It sucks because it leaves me at the mercy of the right thing to come along, because it costs too much if I don’t care about the thing as deeply as possible. I love acting and I love being at work with things that are important and meaningful. It’s just that feeling of life being a little bit too short to do the thing that you should be doing, that other people are telling you you should be doing, or what the industry tells you you should be doing, or what your peers are telling you you should be doing, what your ego is telling you you should be doing. My heart runs the show and I trust it, but I think what it means is my heart is hard to please.

I was quite lost as a teenager as I didn’t really get along with the school system where all that was valued was academia. You were supposed to want to be a doctor or a lawyer or a businessman or you were regarded as worthless, so I didn’t really fit in anywhere. And then I did a school play and suddenly felt a sense of joy and purpose – my whole body went ‘Oh – I’ve arrived somewhere that feels like part of me and this is going to be part of my life’.

Andrew is a theater actor. He’s very serious and dedicated. He’s never satisfied with himself. He knows what’s happened with his movie career and he’ll fight with every fiber of his being not to let that go to his head. He is out to protect himself from the dangers and he’ll do just fine. He’s found the perfect girl for him; they’re the same. Their life is protecting themselves from the horseshit that awaits. The only way to do it is to do something for others and live like a simple person. It doesn’t hurt to be smart and happy. - Mike Nichols
