I love fanfic just as much as the next girl, but comparing it to published literature is bonkers, and if you want to improve your writing you have to read a variation of traditionally published literature, not just fanfic. Some people will say that this is an elitist, homophobic and misogynistic claim, but I don’t agree.

Fanfiction is a bit of a bubble in which writers copy each other endlessly. Similar vocabulary, phrases, styles and themes are extremely prevalent because of this. Like if you want to write something unique and different, then you’re gonna have to broaden your horizons a bit.

Another fanfic phenomenon I notice a lot is they tend to crack the character’s head open and examine it with an industrial strength flashlight until every nook and cranny has been explored. They will go into places were the character itself wouldn’t be able to ordinarily go.

This makes it indulgent, but also leaves nothing up to interpretation and all possibly complexity is stamped out.

“So, does that mean fanfic is bad?” No, but it does mean that if you exclusively read fanfic (or exclusively read any other genre, for that matter) you will become blind to it’s pitfalls and your writing will start to stagnate.

i had this Mouthwashing x Disco Elysium crossover in my mind for so long i’m so glad i could finally realise it! i was originally going to do RESPONSIBILITY as a DE skill but i just landed on this eventually, i might still do that tho ^_^ it feels like it would be more of a Psyche skill, but Mouthwashing used the term so violently and physically it felt right to reference Pain Threshold - especially this quote.
