DNI lists on this website are fucking insane

can we explain to early-twenties autistic lgbt people that they . cant be saying these things. you cant be calling people 'degens' in your dni you cant do that. you cant do that man. can we do a history lesson. you cant do that

YOU CANT DO THAT MAN

"in defense of using the term degen, it's generally applied to pedophiles" - conservative man who might actually shoot a trans woman if he saw one within 50 meters of his child, and also LGBT tumblr users who do not know things they should know

i think we as a community need to be done using terms like “bottom” and “pillow princess” negatively, even as a joke, because it’s not a joke anymore in so many spaces. I saw a young lesbian earnestly ask what a pillow princess is in a queer forum and all of the answers were negative, every single one. i’m so tired of people calling real people and fictional characters bottoms as an insult—again, usually as a joke—and it’s so common in fandom. why are you labeling characters bottoms as a method of mocking them? genuinely ask yourself why a queer character or person receiving sex is so funny to you and why the punchline is that it’s somehow demeaning to receive acts of queer sex and consider the many layers of homophobia and even misogyny that have built the foundations of that seemingly harmless joke.

genuinely some of y’all make posts that read like hateful graffiti uncovered in Pompeii

wild thing about all those "why are people over 30 still in fandom" posts is that the idea of fandom (in the sense of writing fic etc) being a youth subculture or even a hobby that was particularly accepting of young people is insanely recent, like, last 20 years at most. prior to that not only was fandom overwhelmingly both driven and populated by people well into adulthood, but if you were a teen trying to write or discuss fic on livejournal or usenet you almost certainly avoided telling people your age, not only because that was general best practice for minors on the internet at the time but because you'd have felt very out of place if all those grownups had known you were a kid, and in fact there's a good chance they would have banned you from whatever community you were trying to participate in. the way that state of affairs managed to get memory-holed so completely we've transitioned to one where a lot of people think fanfiction is and has always been a hobby for teenagers that some unusually childish adults just never grow out of is genuinely bizarre

there are no hard rules for human interaction but honestly i think everyone online would benefit hugely from operating under the assumption that, unless you have been given a specific reason to think otherwise in discrete instances, internet strangers do not want to be approached with:

  • your trauma, illnesses, or deep-rooted self worth issues
  • any come-ons or sexual content
  • over-familiar playful rudeness
  • information about your dnd characters/ocs
  • disagreements with their harmless subjective opinions

if it is your first time speaking with someone i can not highly enough recommend that these do not be your opening topics

something that has happened enough that it’s officially a Pattern of internet behavior: i will make a tweet that’s like, a jokey headcanon about a piece of media, and then someone i’ve never spoken to before in my life will come into the replies to try and offer a directly contradictory and actively depressing take. and either within their initial reply, or once i’ve expressed polite disagreement, they’ll make sure i know that the reason they have this headcanon is because they’re projecting their own trauma or self worth issues onto a fictional character.

and the thing that really gets me about this is that i am like 90% sure these people don’t have any ill intentions or even think they’re particularly overstepping. but i just can not fathom what the intended response to these things. i have NO idea what sort of reaction they’re looking for. it’s such a weird and uncomfortable spot to be put in. it’s a great way to get instantly put on my mental list of people to never engage with in the future

We’ve all heard the “I like pancakes” / “Oh, so you hate waffles?” example of a social media exchange, but we don’t talk enough about how “I like pancakes” / “I can’t eat pancakes anymore since my brother choked to death on one before my eyes” is not a great approach either.

Harrowing: someone in your Fandom just made an innocuous and harmless post that nonetheless betrays a deep misunderstanding of the character and the character's narrative purpose and you just have to sit there and let them be wrong lest you be an asshole

ppl being more interested in Fandom than the actual source text is so real like they do have their own nonexistent text thats just a recycled concoction of the same bland fandom incorrect quotes tropes over and over again which deviates so much from the canon and they prefer to the actual thing lol

my favorite example of sourcecreep is the fact that if you go on reddit, pinterest, or facebook, or google image search 7 years ago, or flickr and photobucket if you're properly fandom old, you will find image edits of disney's jack sparrow with the quote overlay "the problem is not the problem. the problem is your attitude about the problem."

if you've seen enough of these edits (there are many thousands of them), you might even read those two sentences in his trademark cadence.

the problem here, though, is not anyone's attitude about the problem. it's that this quote has never appeared in any of the five films in which jack sparrow appears. nor in any of the video games he stars or guest-stars on. nor in any of the tie-in young jack sparrow novels or the film novelizations. it is not from a deleted scene or an early draft of any script. it's not from any of the disney park parades or firework shows in which jack is included as a face character with recorded speaking lines. it's not from the original ride or the re-dress of the ride post-dead man's chest.

this is a quote from the YA series the sisterhood of the traveling pants. one of the characters' coaches says it to them in one of the books because they are children in high school. there is no reason for it to be attributed to this character or this franchise besides one patient zero at some point or another 20 years ago making an image with a text overlay on picnik photo editor and uploading it to their livejournal or whatever.

anyway this is how asoiaf fans on twitter absorb information about their favs from the series and then post about it. i believe there are many such cases across fandom at large.

ok question tho

ive actually fucking tried to google this but i cant find an answer, all i get are fics

where does the whole “five times _____ and one time ____” fic title thing come from??

is it a reference to something? or is it just a fanfiction thing?

It comes from Basingstoke, a writer from the Due South and Smallville fandoms.

I know she’s on Dreamwidth. I don’t know if she has an AO3 or not.

There might have been one or two REALLY early examples of that story form (like 1980s early), but she invented it as we know it.

ETA: As a matter of fact, here’s the first Five Things story ever: http://archiveofourown.org/works/9519

I just found the Fanlore article, and it looks like while Basingstoke invented the format, Strangecreature, a Torchwood writer, might be one of the first to have used “five times and one time.” But the original prompt was Basingstoke’s. And it’s definitely fanfiction only in origin.

I love it when conversations about this come around again!  How cool is it that I know people in fannish history! (and how uncool is it that I never know it was Bas who invented this until recently – where was I, under a rock?)

tee hee. It wasn’t on purpose! I did the first Five Things and then people have been riffing on it for the past decade. It’s neat.

It’s SUPER neat. I love fandom.

it will never stop being fascinating to me the way the accepted topics for "normal users" to post about enthuastically has over the years shifted more and more to include abuse so long as it isnt related to incest or csa, which retains its "even objective acknowledgement of this existing as a theme in a work can sometimes earn you a whisper network about what a disgusting creep you must be" status.

like it is just hilarious to now be able to see people of a "block this freak they said ginger snaps is about incest" mindset also posting at the same time about how they love 'yuri' so toxic they kill each other.

People turning against Chappell Roan for not accepting harassment & stalking of her and her family, saying Hozier is acting embarrassing for defending his girlfriend THAT Y'ALL WEREN'T EVEN SUPPOSED TO KNOW ABOUT after she got harassed online, calling Pedro Pascal names for.. apparently not greeting fans loudly in his own private time?

Y'all have GOT to get a grip on real life if you think celebs establishing boundaries is working against you. You do not know these people, you will not sleep with these people and they do not owe you anything!!!!!!

People need to remember that Hozier and Chapell Roan's job is making music, and Pedro Pascal's job is acting. Those are their fucking jobs. When they're on stage, they are working, so let them do their fucking job and don't be a weirdo about it. When they are not on stage or making a deliberate public appearance, they are not at work, so leave them the fuck alone.

If you're not running up to your favorite barista to demand a selfie and a hug, but you are doing that to a musician or an actor: what makes that person different to you? What about their job makes you think they owe you fucking anything at all? You pay them to perform a little song. You don't pay them for 24/7/365 access to their lives.

(And if you do treat your favorite barista like that... what is wrong with you?)

Maybe it's just bc I'm from nerd culture, where I did 100% pay $108 for 5 minutes of talking to Katee Sackhoff & a signed picture, but like... that was a work transaction. I paid for her time. I paid for her to listen to 5 minutes of my nerd babble. (I honestly don't remember what I said - I pretty much black out in those situations.) If I wasn't paying her and she wasn't at her table, uh. Yeah. Then she isn't working and if I ran into her I might say, "Oh hi, I love your work," at most, and then leave her alone bc she's not at work, and like everybody else, she deserves to get to exist outside of work.

Rove McManus was out of the public eye for a while after his wife died. On the day or the weekend before his talk show came back on air, someone encountered him at a lake and had the following exchange:

Random person: are you Rove McManus?

Rove McManus: not today

And I just always think that celebrities are only their celebrity-self when they choose to be.

if you appreciate male characters you like as whole, complex people with positive aspects as well as deep flaws but view all of your favorite female characters as perfect flawless badass snarky women who take no shit from the infinitely stupider and less competent male characters you’re not actually doing that because you just like women soooo much more than men hehe you’re doing it because you’re less interested in female characters and dont consider them to be three dimensional people in the way male characters are commonly viewed as

Anonymous asked:

You seem to really not like DashCon. Is it, like, the worst-of-the-worst con? (I really don't know, the only ones I properly know of are ones like SDCC and NYCC)

DashCon is a first-year fandom convention for Tumblr users. It is happening this weekend and turning into possibly the largest convention kerfuffle anyone has ever seen.

  • You can attend wonderfully informative panels like this at DashCon:
  • DashCon claimed there would be 3,000-7,000 attendees. There are 1,000 at most and all of them are white kids in flower crowns who are rioting for the anti-sexualization of women in media while simultaneously running panels about “homoerotic subtext in fandoms and finding the gay ships for YOUR fandoms!!!”
  • The con didn’t have the money to cover WTNV’s transportation and performance fees. When WTNV asked them to pay the remainder of their performance fee prior to the panel beginning, DashCon was unable to do so, and WTNV walked out as they are positively free to do because what the fuck you don’t invite keystone guests if you aren’t able to pay their fees upfront (and showing them your PayPal balance on a smartphone absolutely does not count).
  • It’s being speculated that Steam Powered Giraffe was not even booked properly in the first place.
  • A full weekend badge was $65 dollars for a first-year fandom con jesus christ that’s almost the price of most full-fledged comic cons.

The list continues but so far it’s only the con’s second day and it is quite literally the most dramatic, hysterically cringe-worthy convention debacle I have ever seen unfold.

Adding some updates as of 7/12 at 7:35 PM EST:

  • The game room consists of some tables, one TV, and one gaming console. No, really, that’s it.
  • DashCon proves they have possibly the worst PR team ever when addressing the WTNV cancellation. Instead of clearly explaining the situation, they say they “don’t want to get into it,” and then offer compensation for those who bought advanced seating tickets for the Night Vale show. What’s the compensation? An extra hour playing in the ball pit (which is really just a slowly-deflating children’s pool with some balls in it). Oh, and if there’s room, you may get one of the first-come-first-serve spots at the Time Crash concert happening tonight. Huzzah!
  • Most panels are completely disorganized. The “Name That Anime” panel was even handing out hotel mints as prizes for correctly answering questions like “what’s the anime where they fight with clothes!!!”
  • This still needs verification, but supposedly there are minors being let into the 18+ panels (like “BDSM 101”), which DashCon could easily get sued for allowing. Not that they have the money for it.
  • It’s been pointed out that as a Marriott hotel, the Renaissance would have required them to submit their full reservation payment 5 days in advance of the event. Therefore it’s very, very likely that the “$17,000 fundraising” was a huge scam. Because DashCon would’ve had to pay that money 5 days before this weekend or the event wouldn’t even be happening in the first place.
  • Furthermore, someone attempted to debunk the letter that DashCon posted to prove that the hotel asked for money. Not all their points are valid (i.e. “RE:” is commonly used for “Regarding”, not just in response to previous communication, and idk but this dude doesn’t strike me as an expert on internal Marriott stationary), but frankly the letter looks sketchy if only because 17000% 99% of it is whited out. Is it real? Is it fake? We just don’t know.
  • There has been no confirmation that the money donated in cash and via PayPal last night ever made it to the hotel (if that was indeed where it was intended to go).
  • People are demanding full or at least partial refunds. Needs verification, but purportedly DashCon has a list at the con where you can sign your name and the amount you donated to be refunded later. Which sounds like a totally effective and not at all easily-abused system. [Verified: x]
  • Attendees are either in denial saying this is the best con ever or they’re crying and having panic attacks. Welcome to Tumblr.

And as a bonus: DashCon originally ran an IndieGoGo campaign last year to raise $5,000 to start their convention. They raised $4,000. The campaign ended in April 2013 and rewards have still not been sent out (which consisted of tea bags, a couple business cards with your Tumblr URL on them, and if you donated $500+, some knick-knacks from Etsy).

More updates, as of 7/13 at 3:59 AM:

  • An update from a friend whose company is a vendor at DashCon this weekend:
image

As always, if you can confirm or deny anything in these masterposts with proper validation, it’s greatly appreciated! I originally did the first one just to answer an ask I got, but as it’s blown up I figured I’ll keep doing it, since I’m captivated by the whole mess anyways. :’D

I’m heading to sleep now but I’ll do another update tomorrow once I’ve caught up on anything else that happens tonight! Hopefully no one dies. I’m not sure how else this con could get any worse.

And one last thing, just to clarify: my heart goes out to all you guys who paid to attend what you thought would be a fun convention and instead got this trainwreck. Even if it turns out that the $17,000 fee wasn’t a scam, remember that it is absolutely unacceptable for a convention to operate this way. I’m so glad that many of you have been able to see the positive in a bad situation and still managed to make friends and have a good time - but don’t forget to stand up for yourselves, too. A convention should never extort money from its attendees for any reason. Again, it’s great that you still made some good memories, but good memories alone do not make a good convention. Make sure your feedback is heard, especially if you want to see this con (or any future Tumblr-oriented con) have any hope of success.

Good morning! Here we are, July 13th, the final day of DashCon. So far, this is what’s happened as of 11:46 AM:

  • Supposedly this Tumblr user posted a full version of the letter from the hotel to DashCon staff. However, it is not real. If you’ll notice, the original letter as the amount due written as “$20,000.00” whereas in this version it’s only “$20,000”. The formatting also does not line up correctly. (Too bad it isn’t real, though, that’d be a riot.)
  • Gingerhaze revealed that Doug Jones has already left the premises.
  • Another witness account describes how DashCon “collected money in a bag” during the $17,000 debacle. They also took names on an email list to issue WTNV refunds at a later date. Who wants to take bets that said refund never happens?
  • This video shows the moment when it was announced that WTNV left the convention.
  • DashCon is making news headlines.
  • Staff tries to start rumors that WTNV was paid and left anyways. No one believes it.
  • People are debating whether or not out-of-state businesses require an Illinois LLP to operate within Illinois, or if they only have to pay a $500 registration fee (which we have no confirmation of DashCon doing so). Would any lawyers care to confirm/deny?
  • The act of offering extra play time in the ball pit as compensation for the WTNV tickets could easily turn into another lawsuit, as they did not originally charge an entrance fee for the ball pit, therefore giving it no comparable monetary worth to compensate for the purchase of event tickets.
  • Attendees and staff are attempting to start the conspiracy theory that 4Chan ruined DashCon.
  • Like Gingerhaze and WTNV, the BakerStBabes are also being forced to pay their hotel fees because DashCon refuses to cover the costs as originally promised. Admins are refusing their calls. You can read more about their experience here.
  • The artist and vendor hall has essentially cleared out.
  • Please note that dashcon-staff is a fake Tumblr account.
  • Finally, here’s a video of a con admin describing his experience during the $17,000 fundraising events of Friday night.

Alright, guys. This is my last update to the masterpost. I’ll continue to post more coverage on my blog’s Dashcon tag as it happens, but this will be my last update for this compilation!

So, it’s Sunday evening, and DashCon has officially ended. Here’s how the kerfuffle concluded:

  • The DashCon Feedback Panel with the admin team left a lot to be desired in terms of PR. Several things were discussed, including the Night Vale payment issue, the method of paying the hotel on Friday night, and the fact that they made a down payment on DashCon 2015’s venue 6 months ago. Also, full weekend refunds? Not happening.
  • BakerStBabes threatened lawyers and got their room situation sorted out.
  • Guillermo Del Toro has reportedly been notified about the unlicensed showing of Pacific Rim at a convention, which occurred in a room of approximately 60 people.
  • CORRECTION: When the two staff members went on /cgl/ last night, it was not with the intention of defending DashCon. Says one: “We were sick of the way we’d been treated over the course of the convention and wanted to vent.” Said staff member has asked to remain anonymous, but I will be posting snippets from an interview with them later tonight.
  • More light has been shed regarding the “Tumblr University” partnership and a promo video that was originally shot for the con in its early stages, via someone who was directly involved at that point.
  • An anonymous 16-year-old contacted me to say she was able to sneak into the BDSM panel. In contrast, another 18+ panel assured me they were vigilantly carding the door. Any more firsthand accounts would be greatly appreciated.
  • Mentions of pick-pocketing on Saturday have surfaced.
  • A former committee member has provided further insight into the DashCon origin story and fundraising committees.
  • It’s been determined that it is fully legal for DashCon to operate within Illinois despite being a registered LLP in Ohio. Thanks, legal side of Tumblr! [More discussion: x]

Again, if you have any corrections or other information you’d like to provide, please feel free to submit it. Thanks so much to everyone who’s contributed and offered support for this resource; glad to hear people have found it helpful!

The comprehensive masterlist put together during the event :)
