Tell me about a complicated man. Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy, and where he went, and who he met, the pain he suffered in the storms at sea, and how he worked to save his life and bring his men back home. He failed to keep them safe; poor fools, they ate the Sun God’s cattle, and the god kept them from home. Now goddess, child of Zeus, tell the old story for our modern times. Find the beginning. -The Odyssey, translated by Emily Wilson For @dimplesflint, thanks for the books and chocolate!

hi new sambucky fans here’s some things that black sam fans have been dealing with since 2014 :)

  • racism. lots and lots of racism.
  • theories that Sam was working with Hydra all along. no I’m not joking people seriously thought this black man was working with Nazis.
  • Sam being Steve’s mammy
  • Sam being Steve’s caretaker/emotional mule
  • Sam being the Avenger’s therapist
  • plenty of fics where Sam’s blackness was fetishized
  • yes this includes an entire fic where steve had a fetish for black people called hottentot no I’m not linking it because i love myself
  • yes this also includes bbc, sexually aggressive, mean, hostile, “dominant” top Sam which usually fell into disgusting Mandingo stereotypes
  • yes this is why there are a lot of fanfic where sam typically bottoms because black fans had to make a lot of content to drown out the sheer amount of fic that treated Sam like a human dildo for Steve and bucky
  • black sam fans being targeted by hydra trash party degenerates who wrote fics about Sam being r*ped by Nazis because we were speaking out about how horribly he was being treated
  • did i mention racism? yeah.
  • Sam being Steve/Buckys straight friend
  • Sam being Steve/Buckys cheerleader who literally served no other purpose other than fangirl over them
  • Sam literally being homophobic to Steve/Bucky. Yeah. As in actual homophobic straight guy to Steve and Bucky. This was played up for jokes.
  • So much whitewashed Sam fan art oh my god
  • Sam’s importance in Steve’s life being written out of headcanons and fic
  • Sam and Bucky’s banter dynamic from Civil War literally devolving into Sam just being extremely aggressive and bullying Bucky for no reason. Yes this includes “jokes” where Sam even physically harms Bucky. It’s been 3 years and it’s only gotten worse.
  • so many marvel fans talking about how anybody else should get the shield mantel passed down except for sam. literally anybody else. there were headcanons about how tony deserved the shield over sam.
  • that one post where peter Parker, a 15 year old white boy, had to school Sam, an almost 40 year old black man, on the importance of voting in the us elections. no you are not hallucinating this was real.
  • racism pt 3: the anti-blackness returns

I think all of these are valid problems around Sam Wilson, who is a sweetheart, except for the Sam wilson being a stucky fan or simply the friend of Steve and/or Bucky. If you ship Steve and Buck together, the story isnt about Sam? The same goes for most Stucky fics I mean, what about Natasha, what about Clint? Secondary characters are in every story except for some avant garde novels, look even in Beckett’s Endgame theres 4 characters and two are secondary, it all depends on the focus you have in the main characters and in Stucky fics, generally Sam is portrayed as a sweetheart and it never degrades him? If you want a story on Sam, maybe search a story where he is the main character? I dont know, at this point, Im starting to ramble, but I dont think its a good thing to mix the important problem of racism with something so basic as being a secondary character? Its an argument that makes your post imbalanced and lose part of its credibility facing people who read Stucky fics

first of all this post isn’t a fucking argument. this isn’t some angry blackie trying to debate with a bunch of marvel fans and the fact that you’re reading this as this really says enough. I literally couldn’t care less if you think me listing that makes my “argument lose credibility” because you’re just gaslighting black fans and arguing with yourself.

second of all, this isn’t about Sam existing as a secondary/supporting character in stucky fanfic. i’ve never read a stucky fanfic in my fucking life. this is about how white stucky fans have reduced Sam to a 1 dimensional character whose only purpose is literally to just emotionally support Steve and Bucky and them getting together. he doesn’t have any other motivation, no other problems, no other goal than to see these two white men fuck. like that may not be a problem for these other Cracker Jack Caucasian characters that you listed but you’re completely missing the fact that this is a problem BECAUSE sam is black and this is a problem that regularly happens to BLACK characters.

PLEASE invest in a leapfrog and some critical thinking skills.

we all know about how sexist the big bang theory is but can we talk about how howard wolowitz is a blatant antisemetic caricature

he’s depicted as physically weak, conniving, and greedy, while also being extremely sexually predatory towards goyische women

said women are consistently referenced as being superior or too good for him (which is part of the sexist joke in terms of his predatory behavior)

his mother is overbearing, loud/shrill, and controlling (common stereotypes of Jewish women) and is derisively referenced as being overweight and having a mustache (which are traits used to stereotype Jewish women as being inferior and less perfectly feminine than the goyische aryan ideal)

this is all blatant antisemitism which becomes even more blatant when you realize that howard is the only Jewish character shown on screen with any consistency

anyway Big Bang Theory is antisemetic as fuck. if any other Jew has anything to add I’d love to hear it

Goyim can (and should) reblog but do NOT add to this post or derail to talk about other topics

Ableism, sexism, racism, antisemitism. What a great show.

“Harry’s childhood affects him enormously, setting the stage for huge swathes of his behaviour throughout the books. It doesn’t start and end with exceptional reflexes and the ability to go for long periods of time on not much food. For example: Sirius Black is the first adult in whom Harry Potter willingly confides before he’s beaten the bad guys and taken care of the issue on his own. This happens in book four of seven. Look, Harry has trust issues: he lets very specific people in and they stay there. End of. Everyone else spends a lot of time bashing their heads against the brick wall that he throws up around those people he loves. But noticeably, all of the people he loves in that way are teenagers like himself; all but Sirius. Never in five books does Harry ever confide in an adult other than Sirius. He accepts guidance from adults when it’s offered to him, but he does not take his troubles to grownups of his own volition. Ever. This character trait drives the entire plot of the first two books - Harry, Ron and Hermione solving mysteries on their own even though they are in a castle stuffed with teachers, among whose number is the man the Wizarding World acknowledges as the greatest wizard alive. They tell all, of course they do. But only when it’s over. Only when they’ve already won. Harry Potter does not trust people who are in a position of power over him. This isn’t a result of Snape, or Umbridge, or Skeeter-induced Ministry ridicule. This is a result of the Dursleys.”

(X)

something else is: he doesn’t strive academically. ron has low academic expectations for himself due to feeling like he can only either tie or lose, should he compete with his older siblings. hermione has painfully high expectations for herself because she’s compelled to prove she deserves her place at hogwarts every single semester of her stay.

meanwhile harry grew up being punished for ever doing as well or better than his favored cousin, but at the same time being derided for doing worse. it creates this frustratingly passive incuriosity in harry later on that’s all the more upsetting when you realize both his parents were intelligent, talented, and ambitious, accomplishing things in their preferred fields well ahead of their peer groups.

harry prefers to keep his head down and avoid trouble, attention, and making any kind of serious effort… except for flying and WAR. and even his innate love of flying gets harnessed, immediately, into the violent, clannish proxy-war of interhouse quiddich games. of course he never trusted authority: even the teachers who genuinely meant him well only pushed him deeper into a brutal, unforgiving world with expectations of him that he never asked for.

dumbledore wanted a child soldier, and he damn well did a good job of making one.

Reasons why I need the A in LGBTIAQ to stand for Asexual, not Ally

Because my mother told me that all I needed to do was get drunk and lie back and let my husband have his fun. Because if I was drunk, I’d be more relaxed and it’d be over sooner

Because my sister told me that I was trapping my husband in an abusive marriage, and that one day he was going to leave me

Because both of them looked at me in disgust

Because my asexuality is considered to be as great a crime against my husband as a woman who has affairs and cheats on her husband

Because my cousin didn’t even try to understand, and just kept asking ‘but what about in five years? how will you feel then?’

Because I was so afraid of my body and so afraid of sex that I didn’t seek medical help for a legitimate question for over a year for fear of being labelled a deviant or something broken

Because I still ask myself at least once every day if my husband wouldn’t be better off without me

Because I still ask myself at least once every day if I’m broken

Because I still tell myself at least once every day that I’m pathetic and useless and an abnormality

Because I love my husband with every fiber of my being, but everywhere I turn I’m told I really don’t, because love = sex

I need A to stand for Asexual because nobody ever talked to me about asexuality even when I was an outpatient at the women’s hospital for 18 months, and everyone told me desire would come in time

I need A to stand for Asexual because we are literally invisible, and so unimportant that people assume we don’t even need representation, because everyone assumes our lives must be bland and unimportant and lacking in challenges or bigotry

For every asexual that wants a relationship, for every asexual that does not want a relationship, for every asexual who has not yet come to terms with their identity, for every asexual who was told we were abnormalities, for every asexual who was told we just weren’t doing sex right, that we needed a good fucking, that we needed to be drunk, that we needed to relax, that we needed to be raped

We need representation, and we need visibility

That is why the A needs to stand for Asexual, and never for Ally

Fucking Important Post.

There are a lot of Harry Potter theories that have existed in the series’ fandom, such as Snape being a vampire or Sirius and Remus being secret lovers. Many of these theories have been contradicted by the books themselves, and others seem to have little evidence supporting them in canon.

One such theory, however, bears notice. Draco Malfoy is an annoying antagonist throughout all seven Harry Potter books, but noticeably less so in the sixth and seventh. Presumably, he stops his sophomoric pranks as a consequence of his highly stressful year-long assignment to play a key role in the assassination of Albus Dumbledore.

However, there may be an even more powerful reason for the trajectory of Draco’s character development in these latter books. This is that between the fifth and sixth books, directly after Lucius Malfoy has failed to retrieve the prophecy, Voldemort allows Fenrir Greyback to bite his son, Draco.

We’ve gone back through the 6th and 7th books, and compiled some of the most convincing evidence below:

Draco is not a Death Eater At the beginning of the 6th book when Harry is hiding in Borgin and Burkes, Draco threatens Borgin, and shows him something on his arm. Harry thinks the thing on Draco’s arm is a Dark Mark, but we never see this. Harry always immediately assumes things and they turn out to be false. If Harry wakes up in the middle of the night months later it is usually right, or if he talks about it with Hermione and Hermione gets it, then it’s right. Hermione doesn’t think Draco is a Death Eater, so he probably isn’t. Another reason Draco probably doesn’t have a Dark Mark is that at the end of the sixth book there is a barrier to the Astronomy Tower that you can only pass through if you have a Dark Mark. This barrier goes up immediately after Draco goes up to the tower, and comes down just before he goes down. Additionally, Draco is never treated as a Death Eater (and there is no reason for Voldemort to give Draco a Dark Mark). So what is he? One ongoing arc in the 6th book is that Draco is sickly and stressed out. This is supposedly because of his quest, but Rowling does this misdirection a lot. Fenrir Greyback is introduced as a character who specifically punishes people who’ve messed up by biting their children. Remus Lupin is explicitly mentioned as an example of this. Why set this up if not to use it later? Relatedly, Lucius’s demonstrated punishments do not seem severe enough for his transgressions at the end of the 5th book, by the standards we are supposed to expect from Voldemort by this point in the series. It is also important to keep in mind that Lucius also mishandled Riddle’s Diary, resulting in the destruction of one seventh of Voldemort’s soul. It is likely that Lucius’s additional punishment was unspeakably terrible. Voldemort says, “Maybe you can babysit the cubs,” to Draco when the Death Eaters find out that Remus and Tonks are having a baby. This is a throwaway if he is not a werewolf. For us, the nail in the coffin is that, while showing Borgin the mark on his arm, Draco says that Fenrir Greyback is a close personal friend and he’d hate for him to have a to pay a visit. And if the thing on Draco’s arm in Borgin & Burkes’ was not a Dark Mark (which it’s not), what else could he have possibly shown Borgin to make him so frightened? Finally, Rowling has said in an interview that one scene in the third movie, there was a moment that foreshadowed something she knew was coming that gave her chills. In that movie, Draco impersonates a werewolf and does a wolf howl. This also works for the arc for the flipping of the Malfoy family, who take care of themselves instead of following Voldemort. It makes more sense for them to throw away decades of servitude if one of them has been turned into a half-blood, making them idealogically incompatible with Voldemort’s pure-blood regime. So why hide it? There is precedent for J.K. Rowling revealing only the tip of the iceberg in some of her characterizations. For example, Rowling was originally going to write a whole arc about Dean Thomas’s family, but instead she focused on Neville. Additionally, Dumbledore’s love of Grindelwald is never addressed during any of the books, and was only revealed by J.K. Rowling during a Q&A after all the books had been published. There are likely many other elements of the story that have been left behind the scenes for one reason or another. It may be entirely possible that Draco’s reveal was planned for the seventh book, for example, but got cut for pages. Rowling has new content being released by book, and could be saving this to reveal on Pottermore for the seventh book. One reason this would be really cool:  It makes Draco’s relationship with Snape even more interesting if Draco is relying on him for Wolfsbane potion.

Let's Talk About the Daily Mail

I’ve seen a few news stories posted on Tumblr recently, which is fine, obviously. You should post news stories. News stories are important. But a lot of these stories are being taken from the Mail Online, the website of the Daily Mail, which some of you may not realise is a bad thing.

If you’re not familiar with it, the Daily Mail is a UK based newspaper which has done more to spread hate, fear and intolerance than any other mass media outlet I can think of. It’s part of Murdoch’s empire of right wing extremism, and is essentially the UK’s answer to Fox News.

Here’s a few examples of its previous misdemeanours. I’ve tried to avoid linking to the Mail Online itself, so forgive me if some of these links are a little subjective in their commentary.

This is a very short list. I could pull thousands of articles about the dangers of immigration, the rise of Muslim extremism, the “gay agenda” being taught in schools, why women deserve to be raped if they dress provocatively, etc.

The problem with the Daily Mail is that it relies on the left being riled up and angry about their shock-provoking bile, just as much as it relies on the right agreeing with it. They get the large majority of their profits from online clicks, and hey, a click is a click, be it from someone who agrees with their racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic bullshit, or be it from us, who are only there to make ourselves angry. We need to be better than that, and we need to rise above it.

But you will occasionally find yourself accidentally clicking on a link to the Daily Mail from time to time. Links to the website are everywhere, and sometimes they’re innocuous enough, like a plain report of an event. The Daily Mail is a horrible group of people, but it’s a clever one. They know how to get you to click on their links. But there’s a solution.

INSTALL THIS EXTENSION FOR CHROME. It’s called DailyFailBlock, and will block any link to the Mail Online and take you to Google News Search instead, thus depriving the Mail Online of their much needed click-throughs and ad revenue. It also blocks links to the Daily Express, which is just about as bad.

Do not visit the website, do not post links, and do not be tempted after three glasses of wine to go to the comments section and tell these writers why they’re wrong. The newspaper is making less and less money from its print editions, but its online editions are continuing to bring in more and more profit. Even if you’re not clicking on any adverts, don’t give them the benefit of your visit. If enough people completely cut out the Mail Online from their everyday browsing routine, it will strike a real blow against those who publicly oppress minorities for a profit.

I’m going to point out again for those who don’t click links: This young woman was shot in the head and neck by the Taliban for speaking out on behalf of women’s rights in Pakistan.

She is fifteen years old. She is also still alive. It is likely that she will suffer lifelong language and coordination difficulties given where she was shot (left side of her head) but she hasn’t given up her fight.

While Islamic clerics in Pakistan have issued a Fatwa against the men who tried to murder her, the Taliban has re-iterated its intent to murder her and her father.

I can’t express how much of a hero this woman is. She’s only fifteen, and yet she’s faced such impossible odds, and she’s still fighting. I just wish there was something I could do to help her.
