The number 24 is considered “gay” in Brazil, so straight men will have candles like this for their 24th birthdays…
It stems from what now is illegal gambling.
The “jogo do bicho”(animal game) started back in 1892 by baron João Batista Viana Drummond, founder of the Rio de Janeiro’s Zoo, as a way of keeping it from closing it’s doors. Then, the visitors would buy the ticket and get one of 25 animals, and, by the end of the day, if you had the animal that was drawn, you could get up to 20x what you paid for the ticket. Nowadays we have bicheiros(people who work with the bettings) all around town who organize everything.
The thing that makes the number 24 gay for us is that the corresponding animal is the deer, and, in portuguese, deer sounds like a slur for homosexual men. Veado means deer, while viado comes from transviado, which could be translated as perverted(from God’s way). This term was taken back by the LGBT+ community but can still be used in a pejorative way.
This is such a reach are straight men ok
@straight-people-again I believe you were the one who wanted an explanation
I’m going to be honest, this is probably the funniest thing a straight person has ever said
But sir this is my emotional support hateful slur
You said Captain Flint would have to disappear for this plan to work. Are you truly ready to let him go?
Did I ever tell you where that name came from? No. I told you of my grandfather who raised me. A fisherman in Padstow. Well, in his youth he was a deckhand on a privateer off the coast of Massachusetts. And one night he was alone on the late watch at anchor in the Boston Harbor when he sees this man climbing out of the water and onto his ship. A stranger. Now, my grandfather thought about ringing the bell, but curiosity got the better of him. The stranger approaches my grandfather and asks him for a little rum. Man said that he’d fled his fishing trawler. Accused of killing another man. And when asked his name, the man simply replied Mr. Flint. This stranger, he never said whether he was guilty of the killing or why he chose that ship or where he was bound, he just… just sat there. Eventually, he asked my grandfather for a little more rum from below. My grandfather went off to fetch it, but when he returned… the man was gone. My grandfather was in Boston for a month after that. Never heard a word about a killing or a fugitive at large. It was as if the sea had conjured that man out of nothing and then taken him back for some unknowable purpose. When I first met Mr. Gates and he asked me my name… I feared the man I was about to create. I feared that someone born of such dark things would consume me were I not careful. And I was determined only to wear him for a while and then dispose of him when his purpose was complete. And I thought of that story.
#silver will be flint’s end #but not in the way everyone thinks #captain flint will die #james will live #flint (james) surviving treasure island will be twist that creators said makes the book different having seen black sails #the outcome is only uncertain for those who disbelieve #i believe in this show #and i believe if there’s any show that can do what is necessary to make media better it’s black sails #and idealistic queer baes deserve peace (x)
I’m elated so many people are reblogging this, especially with my tags, as I was hoping people would see my theory and find comfort in it as I do. I relate so deeply to Flint (not so much the situation or the actions he takes lol but spiritually) so even though he ‘fails’ in his plans to change the world, to see him leave his demons and shame behind him and after all his efforts and sacrifices, to be able to walk inland and find peace would be so meaningful for me to see. It would be a huge validation that we’re “not crazy” to believe and have hope. That even if the world’s not ready to change, we deserve and are allowed to find peace. Especially in light of the Clexa outrage and LGBT+ people being constantly punished in media, not being allowed a “happy ending”. I know Flint has done a lot to answer for but in a show where everyone is morally grey and you feel all their motives so deeply this ending makes sense to me.
Anyway, my reason for writing this (lmao wtf rambling self, calm down!)! I added some more tags to my original post and want to post more publicly in case anyone was hurt and I would love to get a discussion going.
#eta: was brought to my attention that queer may be problematic term especially to apply to flint considering how they labelled thomas 'mad' #which is similar to how 'queer' was used in history to dehumanise and ‘other’ #even using word in present day when reclaimed could hurt older people or anyone to whom that word still used against #i think it is mostly reclaimed but even still if it hurts one person and has history of abuse i think we need a better term #and historical ppl (even fictional) cant reclaim words that didnt exist when they were alive #or reclaim words used to literally kill them as with thomas #ive seen discussion before on this issue and despite and because of its history i identified with it #and i think a lot about etymology etc and liked the origins and the path it took but seeing it framed in this way i see how can be harmful #so when it's not past midnight im going 2 do some research and hopefully find a better alternative without a negative history #because being lgbtqia+ is not shameful and we need a word to represent that on our own terms #without bad memories and associations for anyone #know no shame

I didn’t shoot it like a scene where you [say] action [and] cut. I kind of let the camera roll for four or five minutes and I let Helena and Emma improvise to a certain extent those moments, so they could build an intensity together. […] There were one or two moments that were really powerful, where Emma was able to just let go a little bit and forget for a moment that she was acting. And the screams were quite horrible to listen to. It was a very odd energy in the room. I felt in that moment, and in that day and in that room, she kind of crossed the line as an actress. She discovered something within herself that will make her a great actor. (x)
It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more.

As apology tours goes, he’s doing really well. Owning up, no “if you were offended,” no forgiveness begs, using it as a teaching moment.
And it doesn’t sound like his publicist wrote any of it.
this makes me hopeful for future generations, & made me tear up.
Fuck the audience for laughing at the end but how mad jimmy obviously got when they did was good
