Tumblr and Representation

When it comes to tumblr and representation, it reminds me a lot of that story of the christian woman who asked if the bible was being sold at the book shop in the airport. She got angry when she found out they didn’t sell the bible, but when the guy who worked at the shop asked if she was going to buy the bible, she said she wasn’t. She was just making sure if they sold the bible or not.  That’s what tumblr is. Tumblr is that white christian lady who gets angry when the book store doesn’t sell the bible, yet if the bible were offered, they wouldn’t take it. They beg for representation and when it’s being handed to them they completely ignore it in favor of something else. One big example is with Marvel. Everyone on Tumblr was clamoring at Marvel for not giving proper representation in their movies. White guy after white guy has been casted back to back. The women of their universe were pushed to the background and relegated to love interest roles. And with all that clamoring and all that anger, all of you still went out of your way to give them your money, to give them your support, to over analyze every interaction and laud Marvel for their brilliance when really they’re just pushing the same formula down our throats and have been for the past 11 movies. Everyone is so fixated on the lack of representation in Marvel yet completely ignore the representation that is being showed elsewhere. And this is where DC comes in. With the start of the DC Extended Universe, WB, DC, and Zack Snyder have gone out of their way to provide representation within their universe. We will finally get a female led superhero movie. Half of the Justice League is POC. They have a Samoan playing Aquaman, they have Cyborg, they casted a jewish man as the Flash, an Israeli as Wonder Woman, and they will feature John Stewart as the Green Lantern. Wonder Woman is coming out in 2017, and she already made her appearance in Batman v Superman. The Suicide Squad also features Will Smith, Viola Davis, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, and so on. DC doesn’t just provide representation in their movies, but in their TV shows too with POC and with LGBTQ as well. The fact that there is more representation in one DC TV show then there is with all of the MCU is astounding.  And what’s even more astounding is the fact that Tumblr will go out of their way to completely ignore this representation. We have all of these great shows with great writing. They address issues that minorities deal with, POC and LGBTQ aren’t used as props. They’re not used as their token minority that so many studios feel the obligation to have. They are genuine characters that provide to the story.  Now that DC has launched their extended universe with Batman v Superman, it was met with so much negativity. What everyone on here fails to understand is that the negativity isn’t coming from the fans and the casual movie goers, but from the critics who have been outright slandering this movie since they first announced it at Comic Con 3 years ago. These are the very same critics that praised Age of Ultron for its phenomenal story line when in reality, it was met with a lot of backlash from the fans. These are the same critics that praised Joss Whedon for relegating Black Widow into nothing more than a casual romance, just so the Hulk can experience his man pain. These are the same critics that praised Iron Man 3 for it’s fantastic story, when yet again, it was met with so much backlash from the general public. Now ask yourself, are these the critics you’re going to trust. These very same critics that have praised everything you hated about the movie? Batman v Superman isn’t supposed to be fun. It’s not supposed to be family friendly. What it is meant to be is an exploration on humanity. How far will a person go to protect the one’s they love? How much power is too much power? Is there a possibility that the person everyone can trust on can suddenly turn their back on them? This story deals with how people manage loss, destruction, helplessness. There’s nothing funny about that. There’s nothing funny about dealing with the repercussions of death and destruction.  The DCEU is something that we need. We will finally be gaining representation that Marvel has denied us over and over again. Think about this the next time you decide to listen to the critics. Think about this the next time you see another photo set or text post on why Marvel is the best and DC sucks.Because agreeing to them is acquiescing to the idea that we don’t deserve representation. That we’ll be perfectly fine with seeing another 15 more movies where it’s the straight white male who’s the hero and the token black character and female character who will be pushed to the side. That’s what you’re agreeing to when you watch those movies. That’s what you’re agreeing to when you slander the ones who are willing to offer you representation.

Don’t ask for representation only to reject it when it’s shown. If you want representation, then support the people who give representation.

This is not to say that one can’t dislike Batman v Superman but just understand that there is a certain level of hypocrisy going on in the tumblr community. One can dislike a movie and a universe while still supporting or at the very least acknowledging what it’s trying to accomplish . However that’s not the case here. Tumblr yells so much about wanting diversity in superhero movies but when the DCEU at least tried to listen and provide some diversity (though they can certainly do better), they were immediately written off.

How Steve’s vision should’ve gone

This is honestly the only part in AoU where I was legit annoyed - and I love Peggy. But if this is about Steve’s worst nightmare - not being able to go home, and his guilt and how his war isn’t over, then Bucky should have been in it. Even if you don’t ship them, Bucky is still Steve’s best friend and his brother and someone Steve has known his entire life.

gifs borrowed from this post made by barnesrogers

Ok I literally never blog about the Whedon family farm cluster fuck of a bad decision but I’d like to point something out.

These two gifs. Try your best to ignore the glory that is Tony, and awkward turtle that is Bruce, for a moment and look behind them at the wall. More specifically the pictures. Every single one of them are a silhouette. There’s not a single family portrait anywhere. No school pictures. No wedding portrait. No candid moments of the kids outside playing, or baby pictures on the fridge. Which is instead covered in art work (if my memory serves me right i’ve only seen the film once so i could be wrong). Being a mom of one and an aunt of five that’s bullshit right there. There’s a least one picture somewhere on your fridge of ur kid(s). I don’t care how much artwork you’ve got to display.

Anyways back on topic. The pictures behind Tony - They are all profile cut outs. Right next to (look directly behind Bruce’s head for this one in the second gif) what appears to be a vintage picture of a circus poster. This entire house, (memory wise) is completely staged. And they (marvel) didn’t even try to hide that fact.

Marvel doesn’t make accidental errors. (ie if they error they meant to do it. point in case my muse.) To position Tony right in front of these pictures with the lines he has, they gave themselves a way out…these two lines and two split frames gave them a way to allow the ross brothers to clean up Whedon’s cluster fuck. But that’s just my two cents. The anger over this insertion will never go away. I’m as mad about as I am about the decision to use my favorite Avenger as a god damn tragic backstory tool.

Marvel you’ve given yourself wiggle room to correct both of these bad decisions. Fucking fix your shit.

“Captain America. God’s righteous man. Pretending you could live without a war.” - Ultron, AOU.

I think this something that gets focused on a lot while also somehow brig skimmed over. And I agree with this to a certain extent.

Steve can live without a war. He’d probably love to live his life without being involved in any wars or government agencies.

The thing is, Captain America doesn’t exist without war.

Steve was supposed to be the first of many super-soldiers but, as we know, the army of super-soldiers never happened and he’s the only one we’ve got.

Steve hasn’t had a chance for a life outside of the Captain America persona since WWII.

As we saw in CATWS, Steve doesn’t have a clue what he could/would do if he “got out.” He doesn’t even have an answer for what makes him happy.

Apart from Peggy, Steve doesn’t have anyone or anything to relate to from before WWII but Steve hadn’t even met Peggy until he started Army boot camp, and now her Alzheimer’s sometimes prevents her from knowing the current year or recognizing Steve at all.

Even though Steve has a small group of well meaning people/friends to support him, he is essentially alone. And this is a big part of what has me excited for Cap3; that Steve will have someone to [re]connect with, who has similar life experience, that Bucky will be back in Steve’s life.

And this goes along with what Chris said in interviews at D23 - Steve is going to be doing something for himself, he’s being selfish in going after the Winter Soldier. For Steve, it’s not about tracking down a wanted assassin, he is trying to find his best friend. He has motivation outside of his duties as Captain America for the first time in a long time.

I’m really hoping that the conversation of what makes him happy comes up again in Cap3, preferably a conversation that includes Bucky.

“Maria Hill called you. Was she ever not working for you?

#maria hill#why is she wearing dresses or skirts for 75% of this movie??

Because media can’t stand having butch characters represented. Joss Whedon likes his female kickass characters to be all feminine and appealing to men. Maria Hill is no exception.

Let me tell you, I am sick and tired of the stereotype that butch characters will suddenly put on dresses and high heels when they need to be part of a formal setting.

I mean, the fucking gag reel has Cobie almost falling down because of the impractical shoes she’s wearing on those shiny polished floors. I can hear Maria rolling her eyes at the entire thing. Corporate setting or not, if she was wearing pant suits in AoS for fucking congress, why the fuck would she suddenly be in stylish dresses because she’s working for fucking Tony Stark?

Maria’s butchness is so important to me. Look at the comics where in her free time she’s wearing leather jackets and jeans. But oh no, they have to put her in an (kind of ugly wtf is that jewellery) dress for this movie and give her a leather jacket that people keep thinking is Steve’s rather than her own.

Fuck that shit. Fuck this need to take butch characters and make them all feminine. I respect that in the end she’s back in her SHIELD gear and back to looking hot and like herself, but why is there this urge to put any female character in the most female clothes they can find whenever they’re out of uniform? Why must there be this culture to imply that it is never the character’s choice to look anything but feminine?

Fuck this movie and its attempts to erase Maria Hill’s butchness. Fuck this movie for having no fucking clue what this character is about and turning her into a lackey of Tony Stark and Nick Fury. Fuck this entire fucking movie for ruining any female’s characterisation and making them secondary to all the male characters.

Goddammit, I’m not even asking them to acknowledge the butch lesbian that we all know that she is. Just butch. That’s all I fucking ask. Argh.

Marvel: to relate to female audience, we will have Black Widow involved in a romance with a team member

Am so pleased you loved Mad Max: Fury Road! I would love to hear your thoughts on how the female characters are portrayed compared with in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Also wonder if you have seen Anita Sarkeesian's tweets proclaiming that Mad Max isn't feminist, which I couldn't disagree with more.

There were a few different parts to your ask, anon, so this ended up turning into a loooooong reply.

The main appeal of Mad Max for me personally is that it’s an amazingly well madeaction movie without any of the—pardon my French—unselfconscious dickwaving that makes the majority ofaction movies alienating for me as a female viewer. In fact, the film veryclearly addresses how destructive toxic masculinity is. I wish I could say ‘bigwhoop’, but unfortunately this level of self-conscious criticism in mainstreamfilms is incredibly rare, especially in the action genre. So just off the topof my head, here’s some of the things I feel Mad Max does differently from Ageof Ultron (and the majority of other action movies out there) with respectto women and gender. (Mild spoilers under the cut.)
