Keira is brilliant throughout, really. She was a revelation to me, Keira Knightley, and I learnt a lot from her. (Joe Wright)

Okay, I’m generally quite cocky when I’m presenting these things. Tonight I’m not gonna be because I actually mean a lot of the things I’m gonna say, because of the person who’s receiving it. Right! This year’s recipient of the Empire Hero Award is, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of this country’s… uhm, examples of a movie star. What is a movie star? A movie star is exceptionally talented. Check. A movie star is ridiculously beautiful. Check. A movie star is sometimes a fashion icon. Check. A movie star creates work not only for themselves but for thousands of others in this country every single year. Definite check. A movie star has an insatiable desire to seek exciting work not just the big budget blockbusters that are readily fallen at her door every single day. A movie star has grace, poise, humility, dignity and generosity. These are words that my wife and I have used for her since she was sixteen years old. Right… what else did I write down? A movie star, a fashion icon, an actress, a West Ham fan and, in my personal experience, I can tell you she’s a hilariously down to earth human being. She’s all these things. She’s sometimes these things reluctantly, she’s sometimes, basically all the times, I think, these things triumphantly. I’m proud to have worked with her and to know her.
