Ghahh those tags tho I mean in the book he doesn’t think Aziraphale is dead, just “out of the picture”  and he’s kinda pissed at him and he does consider going on a drunken bender and letting it all run out but he doesn’t, he goes to Tadfield on his own when he discovers Aziraphale’s notes because he’s the eternal smeggin’ optimist who thinks that if they have a chance then it’s going to be all ok because it can’t be any other way, even if it ends up  just being him against both heaven and hell so he doesn’t go drunken depression….but in the series he thinks Aziraphale is DEAD. DEAD DEAD DEAD. And all that speeching about “no more book shops, no more cafes where they know your name” all of it is exposed as a big fat lie because while he likes the world and he likes humans and he likes dolphins and apes an all those wonderful little human things, they absolutely pale compared to how much he loves Aziraphale’s company, and now Aziraphale is gone.   And it’s all ashes.  So he goes and he gets absolutely shitfaced drunk and waits for it all to end.

I first read American Gods I was around 16 years old. At the end of the book, when Sam kisses Natalie I started to cry. As a Métis-Gitsxan-white bisexual woman my identity has been confusing. I still don't really know how to answer when people ask me the inevitable "what are you?" And for the first time in Samantha Blackcrow,I saw myself.I never truly understood why representation mattered until I saw myself in a character. Its important because it makes you feel less alone.Thank you for this :)

No, thank you.  It’s scary writing imaginary people who you aren’t: you talk to real people, and you go places, and you observe, and then you write and you hope you are getting it right and you hope you are doing those people justice. That was a wonderful thing to read.

If you could hug any Doctor Who writer, which one would you hug? I think personally I would go for Robert Shearman, he looks cuddly and that beard would probably feel nice rubbing on your head. Russell T Davies also looks quite huggable but his propensity towards suits and lack of facial hair might not make it as pleasurable as Mr Shearman.

I would like to hug all the women who have written for Doctor Who since 2008. All of them! I would start with…

What, nobody?  That can’t be right…. (goes off, puzzled).

How about we pick people we’d like to hug in the near future!

Jane Espenson, Jaqueline Rayner, Helen Raynor, and Karen Walton all look very huggable to me!

In the meantime, can I give you a high five for being awesome?

last night @neilhimself and i got into a heated debate at a celebratory birthday dinner party at a friends house. i kept insisting that everything that motivates human beings stems from a deep-seated need to feel safe.

then i accidentally punched him in the nose.

it was really funny.

Possibly slightly less funny if you were the one with your nose wrapped in ice. But still funny.

I love the hell out of her.

My hypnotherapist (not as weird as it sounds) said it's a fear of rejection, back from cavemen times (legit terminology) when if you were rejected you'd basically die, because they needed to hunt etc. in groups, so you had to get in close to the fire to ensure your safety. Which is what Amanda was saying. Just thought I'd specify the fear aspect. Fear makes people do crazy things.

Also this is linked to how people crave power, I think it's all linked to fear of rejection and, as Amanda said, need to feel safe, in control, and in your place etc.

ETA:

lynettifoo asked: What was your side of the argument that caused Amanda to punch your nose?
neil-gaiman: I suggested that people do things as much because it was interesting and they wanted to find things out as because they want to feel safe.

also

madlori said: I see your point, but also Amanda’s…part of what makes me feel safe is knowing things and staying interested.

Doctor Who has never pretended to be hard science fiction … At best Doctor Who is a fairytale, with fairytale logic about this wonderful man in this big blue box who at the beginning of every story lands somewhere where there is a problem. - neil gaiman

Wrapped up in a Good Story

So this is what I made for the Calendar of Tales. It’s for the July story, because the idea of being both comforted by and perilously lost in books hits pretty deep with me. Books and stories have been my companions as long as I can remember, and when the world walks out on you, they can be a shelter and an exile.

I designed and stitched this wrap dress in the buttery shade of old  paperbacks and wrote out the words to Neil Gaiman’s story on it.
