On Kira, the new character for Teen Wolf

Since we don’t know ANYTHING about the character, it’s kind of early to speculate anything, but since Jeff Davis tends to put lotsa hints into names, I tried to make some connections. 

First of all, I guess it’s somewhat safe to assume that Kira, the new Asian American character may be involved in the Japanese culture. 

So I looked up the name Kira, and I found that the name originates from Ancient Greece andJapan. Hmm. The meaning of the name Kira is ruler, mistress, leader of the people. Now it seems that the name Kirais unisex, so we can’t really assume about gender. 

Kirais in the form of the name Kiran, which is originated from Hindi and Sanskrit, meaningbeacon of light.Holy cheeseballs.Beacon of light?! Just like Beacon Hills? The name then evolved into the Egyptian name ofKi-Ra, meaning "like Ra, the Sun" (not too significant, I think). Also kira is used as a onamonapia in Japanese, as “kira-kira" means sparkle.

When Jeff Davis mentioned Kitsune and Kira, the new character (who happened to be Asian American), I immediately thought of how some people connected Beacon Hills with Japanese words. There was one meta on how some Japanese kanji related to Beacon Hills literally meant beacon of light, but this one is interesting as well. 

Immediately thought of Light Yagami but yes, I am excited for these meanings! Hope it's a girl!

SCISAAC LIVES MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!!!!!!

For the first time ever, MTV brought its critically acclaimed horror series to the New York Comic-Con, and it was by far one of the best panels I have attended today. It was clear from the outset that show runner/creator Jeff Davis and star Tyler Posey truly love their jobs, and their fans that come along with it.

There are many ways to describe the fandom surrounding MTV’sTeen Wolf. But unless you’re in a room with the fandom, in person, it’s impossible to truly appreciate how insanely passionate it is. To put my experience with this panel into context, I added over two hundred new Twitter followers as I was live tweeting it.

When the panel began, the duo showed a newly cut gag reel of season 2 from the soon to be released DVD. After this, the moderator immediately jumped to addressing the biggest issue of the day, the very recent and sudden departure of cast member Colton Haynes (Jackson) from the show. Davis stated that he spoke with Colton the night before the panel to confirm his departure, and that his character would be written out smoothly and in such a way as to allow for his return at a later date.

It was after this that the moderator began discussing the way relationships of the characters were going to change next season. One of the more newsworthy shifts is that Lydia will be made a part of Scott’s “pack”, and Stiles was going to move past his crush for Lydia and begin to view her more as a friend. This shift for Stiles was something Davis emphasized, saying that in high school you have to eventually move past your crushes and see people for who they really are. Davis also said that Lydia’s abilities and immunity would be expanded upon in the upcoming season: “This season is about women finding their power.”

Along those same lines, Davis also stated that Scott at the start of season 3 (set four months later in the show’s world at the start of the kids’ junior year) has moved past Allison and has begun growing into a leader. Posey posed to the crowd the possibility of Scott beginning to embrace his powers, and possibly even using them for the purpose of good. Davis also promised that Derek’s line from the pilot to Scott, “we’re brothers now”, will come into play in season three.

As for Allison, who went full on bad-ass in season two, Davis stated that he liked to describe both her and her father as gunslingers who have hung up their guns at the beginning of season three. The premiere will see Allison moving back to Beacon Hills with her father under the condition that both of them stop hunting for good.

In another more newsworthy announcement, Davis said there was a plan to do a flashback episode in the upcoming season that would show a young Derek Hale, and possibly expand upon the relationships between the adults in Beacon Hills. The flashback episode would also explain the blue-eyed werewolf Jackson transformed into at the end of season two. When asked if Davis would get into more of the genetics of families in the show, he said he wasn’t a fan of straying too far out of the supernatural territory, and that he didn’t want to get into a Twilight explanation, citing the example of imprinting.

Fans were also curious about what would happen with some of the side characters this season — namely Issac, Boyd and Erica. According to Davis, the mystery of what happened to Boyd and Erica would encompass the arc of the first few episodes, and he said Issac would become a trainee of sorts to Scott as he develops his werewolf powers.

In one of the final conversations before the panel ended, Davis discussed moving the show’s shooting location from Atlanta to Los Angeles. The move was done to make it easier on the actors’ and writers’ lives, and also so there would be a new pool of actors to choose from. Davis stated that the move would not affect the look of the show in any way, and that the production team was working on building virtual sets so the actors can shoot certain scenes on green screen (I personally am not 100% sold on all of that).

The Teen Wolf panel was by far the most spirited event I’ve attended at the convention this weekend. Its fans are incredible and not nearly as snobby as Twilight’s. Jeff Davis and Tyler Posey could not have been more perfect showmen at their panel, and I wholeheartedly welcome the 24 episodes season three has to offer come next year. x

(I can’t speak on disability, so I apologize for focusing on the social aspects of Erica’s disability here - that is, “bullying” and loneliness” and “ugliness” in general. I know that many aspects of disability are unique and I don’t wish to co-opt them as my own experience.)

I forgot to mention earlier that I totally agree with lola here, even though I was saying that the bite’s not meaningless. I think that the bite is a solution that’s legitimate for easing her pain, a solution you can’t discount because it’s “the easy way out”; but it’s also one that’s reflective of something sad and troubling about our society. 

Jeff Davis said he wanted to create an ideal world in his show, a world where a kid can be gay and the most popular jock at school, a world where the straight hero would grin at getting bought drinks by a guy, a world where nobody cared what race or gender or sexuality you were. I think it says something that disability was a reach too far for this world. When you got to the "fetishization" part, I really hope you meant it was bad because they were people (characters, in FF though), and you're dehumanizing them when you do that and not that fetishes are bad thing or anything. I got to that part and felt seriously uncomfortable because I both know of people who have them, and have my own, and really. I'd just feel better with that clarification.

The "fetishisation" is only bad when it dehumanises - that is a good summary, as I've been having trouble with working out what that line is. I think that's it.

The Sterek Campaign’s First Call to Love is a Go!

Our first Call To Love is launching at the beginning of September and we are calling it COOKIES FOR STEREK in honor of this exchange:

- Everyone that wants to show Jeff Davis some love.

- Bake or purchase chocolate chip cookies for Jeff Davis.

- Take a photo of the cookies (you’re encouraged to be in the photo, or put something Sterek related in the photo).

- Post picture (on given date) with the tag #CookiesForSterek

- Pictures should be posted on September 17th with the tag #CookiesForSterek

- Pictures and messages should be posted to Twitter, Tumblr, LJ, and whatever other social media site you have access to with the tag #CookiesForSterek (so we can track them)

Our goal is to get the topic trending on Twitter and to be able to link the tag to Jeff at the end of the day. This is an excellent way to show our support and love, and to attach that love to Jeff and to Sterek.

You’re welcome to bake cookies for Jeff if you want to just show your support for the show in general!

Some answers for your questions:

1) You DO NOT have to bake the cookies yourself! Purchasing them works as well.

2) Cookies should be chocolate chip (Davis’ favorites) if possible, but if for some reason they can’t be (maybe you’re allergic to chocolate), other cookies are just fine! The idea is to spread the love and support behind the cookies.

3) You do not have to be IN the picture, but that is a nice touch, so Jeff can see his fans. Try to make it funny- give him a big thumbs up smile, or include your favorite Sterek picture, or a sign that says ”WE LOVE/SUPPORT STEREK” or something. Have FUN with this!
