#can we just stop and appreciate Harry’s face in this scene? #I mean, he’s literally waiting for someone to say something about Hermione’s blood status #she’s the only Muggleborn in the slug club full of purebloods and well known people #and Harry’s there just like “say something I dare you” #and if you look at her face, you can see the actual hesitation and somewhat fear of what will happen next after telling of her parents occupation #Harry truly is acting like Hermione’s big brother, which I absolutely love #i just adore this scene

I love that Neville looks genuinely interested in what hermione’s talking about.

Harry: I wish a motherfucka would talk shit right now Say something, make my day Das right

These characters are gorgeous, you know why? Because they’re, essentially, the same boy on opposite sides of the track.

They’re both forced into impossible situations. Draco is forced into Lord Voldemort’s inner circle by his father’s actions and is being pushed and threatened to do things he’d rather not. Harry is forced into a confrontation and destiny he doesn’t want by a prophecy and Voldemort’s actions.

Both are deeply passionate and defensive of their Hogwarts house. Arguably, they both embody the core values of each house. Draco is incredibly sly and cunning and ambitious, desperate to get what he wants. Harry is desperately brave and reckless and courageous. They’re both leaders of their house and even play the same position on their Quidditch teams.

Both boys are famous and influential. Draco has his family’s name and his family’s wealth. Harry has his fame and reputation.

Both boys are used in the war. Harry is used by Dumbledore, prepared and trained to fight Voldemort, manipulated (to a certain degree) into some of his choices. Draco is used by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore, possibly expose Severus as a spy, etc.

There are differences, of course, but, these are, essentially, the same fucking character split into two and pitted against each other—light and dark explored. Bless you JKR.

I have come to accept that the Potter feels will never cease.

Ron Weasley’s character is consciously written as somewhat racist. Not as racist as Malfoy, of course - he doesn’t scoff at mudbloods and halfbloods, and he doesn’t see himself as superior at all. Still, he unquestionably accepts the inferior position of house elves (they love serving), when he finds out that Lupin’s werewolf his reaction is not only scared but also disgusted (Don’t touch me!) and he is clearly very uncomfortable finding out that Hagrid is half-giant (giants are wild and savage).

And this is brilliant. Because it demonstrates that racism isn’t only present in clearly malicious and evil people, in the Malfoys and Blacks - it’s also there in warm, kind, funny people who just happened to learn some pretty toxic things growing up in a pretty toxic society. And they can unlearn them too, with some time and effort. Ron eventually accepts Hagrid’s parentage, lets Lupin bandage his leg and in the final battle, he worries about the safety of the house elves.

Some people are prejudiced because they are evil, and some people are prejudiced because they don’t know better yet. And those people can learn better, and become better people. And that’s an important lesson. The lesson taught about discrimination shouldn’t be “only evil people do it”, because then all readers will assume it doesn’t apply to them. Instead old JK teaches us “you too are probably doing it, and you should do stop ASAP”.
