Disconnected thoughts on Captain America
Does this count as spoilers? Nah, I’m gonna cut it anyway.
the thing about Kirby particularly resonates with me because one of my uncles helped liberate Dachau and saw firsthand the horrors of the camps. Regardless of how this turns out, Brevoort’s lack of historical and cultural knowledge is stunning, and not in a good way.
Also? One of the interviews quoted Brevoort as saying that if this doesn’t go well he’ll be known as “the man who broke Captain America.” I have this odd feeling he may have predicted his own fate.
But we have to do something, reflecting on it is valuable, but you have to hit @marvelentertainment where it hurts!! Buy nothing from them!! Hit them in the pockets!!
No, please don’t do that, and please don’t use my post to segue to a call to action that I personally oppose. You can write your own post about that if you wish; it doesn’t need to be tacked onto mine.
But more importantly: Marvel is more than just this one book, and the fact of the matter is that they have a lot of creators and a lot of editors and a lot of other people working for them in a lot of different capacities. And some of those people do get it.
When you boycott a company like Marvel, you are boycotting all the good books they are producing along with the bad. And there are a lot of amazing, talented people supporting themselves creating those good books.
When a company sees losses across the board, they are more likely to cancel the less-well-known properties, not their flagships. When they see a specific property charting losses, they are more likely to cancel or otherwise significantly change that property.
If you’re a Marvel customer and feel strongly about voting with your pocketbooks because of the Captain America issue, please consider shifting the money you spend with Marvel to Marvel titles that are doing good things, or at very least buy titles by creators who seem to understand these issues and listen even if they don’t always get them right. Make it very clear that there are things Marvel can continue doing to gain your dollars, and things they are not going to get your money for.
Don’t shit on all the creators who are doing really good things at Marvel because of one terribly-presented story arc that doesn’t involve them.
