Silverflint ramblings after watching the finale
Oh my god I just watched the finale so I’m still in a state of utter !!!!!!! and might be slightly spammy and incoherent for a while. Nevertheless, I must just express my absolute delight at how surprisingly amicable the Silverflint was this episode. I can’t believe it.
I found Silver needlessly blunt, and I imagined that his words would have hurt Flint, but I shouldn’t have worried. When it was clear that Silver, this time, didn’t fear for his own sake, but for Flint’s, it all became justified. It was so surprisingly sweet.
Caution to the wind, the both of them accepting that Silver might be more dangerous to Flint now than the other way around, and Flint accepting this. Almost inviting it. Because he might attract dangers and his own tragedies, and it might even be of some comfort to him to accept this. And that Silver poses himself as someone who isn’t vulnerable to Flint - the only one who hasn’t been - might be absolutely thrilling for Flint.
Flint has shown again and again that he doesn’t mind endangering himself - he’s the opposite in Silver when it comes to having a sense of self-preservation. Therefore it must be most preferable for him to be the “endangered” one in a relationship, where he’s only ever been the one to look out for. He doesn’t have to worry about Silver dying because of him - Silver can withstand him. So of course Flint doesn’t worry for his own safety - I think, even if he does feel that he is in danger, he genuinely doesn’t care. He can be himself, and Silver will stay.
And so Flint smiles in the face of danger and he and Silver can both accept their roles as friends or whatever they are without powerplaying or worrying about corrupting each other. The fact that they accepted their roles and the nature of their relationship, without manipulation and lies, is just outstanding. I’ve gone on and on about their mutually destructive relationship and despite their honesty it still is just that, but they’re open with it, and aware. They might have miscalculated their risks somewhat, and they will likely still find ways to challenge each other, but they are on the same side.
I had to pause the episode many times during their conversation to be able to take it all in because it was so overwhelmingly good. And though it might have seemed as if though Silver was meanly accusatory after Flint told him about Thomas, he was actually just being as honest as open with Flint as Flint was to him. Flint let him in, actually revealed what he’s been carrying all this time, and Silver just returned the favour. In telling Flint of the fear he’s been carrying this entire season, which we’ve seen him only speak to others of, he too came clean about what he’s been carrying. He didn’t have ill intent despite his words - you can even accuse him of having good intents.
If I don’t stop now I’ll probably just end up speaking in circles, so I’ll pause for now to continue scrolling down my dash. Just. Damn. Holy shit. This is truly the OTP for me.
