Help me afford top surgery

Hi y'all, for those who don't know me, I'm a disbled, neurodivergent, trans man living in Cape Town, South Africa. I'm also a gradstudent in Astronomy currently finishing up my MSc, an artist and a poet.

In South Africa we don't really have many options to pursue transition, our private medical aids and insurance don't cover any of it, not even hospital costs as they classify gender affirming care as a cosmetic process instead of the life saving medical care we all know it is. Going through the public health sector is also not really an option as the waitlist is over 26 years long due to our national government again seeing gender affirming care as purely cosmetic and only giving one spot for any gender affirming surgery per year.

In South Africa there's also still alot of stigma around being trans and trans people face violence and discrimination on a daily basis, so in addition to the usual benefits of getting top surgery, it will also greatly improve my safety

This is however very expensive, being a student I am on a very tight budget, living paycheck to paycheck already, trying to save up for a procedure that costs nearly my entire yearly income is next to impossible, I also can't turn to my family in this instance as they are extremely transphobic

So the only option I have left is to try and crowdfund it. As I am South African I unfortunately can't use go fund me, so I'm using the South African croudfunding service, backabuddy, it does accept paypall and I-Pay

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated

So far I have raised:

R11 111.00/R120 000.00

$590.13/$6 374.00

(usd for convenience, conversion rate on 6 march 2024, $1 = R18.83)

here's your regular reminder that if you consistently, regularly get headaches, you are almost certainly having migraines, not regular headaches.

MOST recurrent headaches are migraine headaches.

"migraine" does not mean "extremely painful headache." it is a type and source of pain, not a degree of pain. migraines can also include some or all of the following: fatigue, sensitivity to light and sound, visual auras, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, cognitive impairment, etc. these symptoms can be mild or severe and it may actually be difficult to determine if you have them. (who wants a bright light in their eyes during a headache?? i thought that's just how headaches were lmao.)

this is important because while aspirin, NSAIDs like ibuprofren, and other over-the-counter pain meds can effectively alleviate migraine pain, getting diagnosed with migraines allows for a wider range of treatments and preventatives.

it's also important because, in my opinion, your average general practice doctor is not equipped to diagnose you with chronic migraine. don't go to one expecting them to. a neurologist with migraine specialty is a better option, although a regular doctor can still be useful if they listen to you lol.

my life would be miserable and unmanageable without sumatriptan. and i never would have gotten a prescription for sumatriptan if i hadn't gone to my GP and said, "i have migraines and want to try migraine medicine," even though at the time i wasn't 100% sure that was true.

if you have chronic headaches, they're almost certainly migraines. if no one has said that to you before, let me be the first. start treating your migraines.

multiple times in my youth, i went to the doctor expecting them to figure out and tell me if i had migraines. each time, the doctor asked, "do you see an aura?" and when i said no, they determined i must not be getting migraines. no one ever told me that only 20% of migraine sufferers experience auras. that means 80% don't, yet that is frequently used as important diagnostic criteria! what!

a book i recommend over and over is The Keeler Migraine Method by robert cowan. highly recommend if you're trying to figure your migraine situation out.

Migraines don't have to involve headaches! Turns out I've had migraines my whole life and I didn't know, because it doesn't cause headaches. Rather, I get

  • Extreme irritability
  • Photophobia
  • Sound sensitivity
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Inability to remember words
  • Trouble remembering
  • Trouble with basic arithmetic
  • Dizziness
  • Visual changes (stop being able to perceive depth)
  • Back and shoulder pain
  • Fatigue

I chalked a lot of this up to autism and overstimulation.

I saw a neurologist and now I have medicine to treat my migraines. What I have are called ocular migraines.

Please look into migraines without headaches. You may be totally unaware that you have migraines.

Migraines without headaches are called silent migraines, and they’re absolutely a thing. For me they’re even more frequent than painful ones.

Here’s a test which, while not infallible, has led to multiple of my friends realizing that they had migraines and didn’t know it: Do you feel nauseated? Confused? Like you pulled an all-night even though you didn’t? Or are you feeling just generally off in a way that’s hard to define? Go into a really dark room and shut the door behind you. If whatever weirdness you were experiencing gets suddenly better as soon as you’re sitting in the pitch-dark, you almost certainly are having a migraine.

I’ve mistaken migraines for food poisoning and car sickness. I’ve had friends who have mistaken them for everything from seizures, to covid, to a poor night of sleep, to even just having had too much alcohol to drink. The symptoms of migraines are extremely varied, and very few people have all of them - but light sensitivity is common and a bit of a dead giveaway. If you have light-sensitive anything, bring it up with a doctor as a possible migraine symptom.

I wish I was a stress cleaner. Never once has my response to stress been “time to employ some good habits”

It's less of a "time to employ some good habits" situation, and more of a "if I see one more fucking thing not being where it should be, I'm gonna chuck everything right out the window" and then picking things up and putting them away while trying very hard to not just throw shit out the window

ppl in the north don't believe in god as much because it barely lightnings up there. northerners don't even worry about getting smote. that's why the bible belt is all humid states

am i onto something here

Correlation IS causation!

Seems like theres also an ammont of lightning that makes people go "fuck this, this is too much, aint no way God's there" as can be seen by the tip of Florida not being included in the bible belt while also having the most lightning

mariah carey is nearly defrosted and they're playing christmas music in shopping malls

It really differs year to year in my family, sometimes the tree will go up in early November, sometimes it only goes up on 24 Dec, sometimes it stays until February, sometimes it's taken down on 26 Dec, sometimes we don't decorate at all. It really depends on the vibes of the year and where we all are. Like, if we're going on a family vacation over Christmas, we don't bother decorating at all. This year I think it's gonna be a late decorating year, cause I'm only visiting my parents from the 20th, and my brother is working in a different city over December and only has the week of Christmas to new years off. And he's usually the one to do the decorating, he really likes Christmas decorations, but my parents find them tedious, especially the tree. My parents also moved in January, and I honestly have no idea where we put the tree or decorations, or if they even came along during the move, so it might even be a no decorations year, we'll have to wait and see

The problem is mostly keyboard leftists, and hence online leftist spaces, like, eish, there's nothing that makes me wanna call myself a centrist quite like engaging with leftists politics online, and specifically on this website. There's alot of toxicity in the online spaces, alot of infighting over little things, and misplaced priorities in online spaces. Like to the point that every single irl leftist that's actually involved in local activism I've met are saying the online spaces are not worth engaging in. Online leftism has become more about being a subculture, an exclusive club that y'all want to keep the normies out of, especially among young people. And that's really not great, not only does this push people who are on the fence about the issues we all agree on further away cause they see all the toxicity, but it's also being very wasteful of a potentially very powerful tool we could have had. Like we could've used the internet for global organization and recruitment on a scale never before seen, but no, y'all are too busy feigning moral superiority and fighting with people who agree with you on the overwhelming majority of things, but have one differing opinion on a really small issue comparatively.

I might've added the BG3 Art Book to my dnd assets stash

It' 100% does not have things like the 5e players' handbook + 5e’s character sheet, several gm guides, critical role's explorer's guide to wildmount, baldur's gate and waterdeep city encounters, 101 potions and their effects, volo's guide to monsters, both of xanathar's guides, a bunch of other encounters, one shots, and class builds

In no way are there any pdf’s relating to any wizard who may or may not be residing on any coast

(Edit that I’ve moved the folder to the new link above! So if you catch a different version of this post that link won’t work anymore!)
