I was at a courthouse once, and saw an indigenous australian woman in a dressing gown very carefully and gingerly making her way down the steps outside the courthouse, surrounded by family who were helping her down the stairs. We asked if she was OK, because she looked awful. She looked like she should have been wrapped up in bed with blankets and hot soup, not on the steps of a courthouse.
One of her family told us that she had given birth yesterday evening, but that Child Protection services had taken her baby away with no warning, claiming that she wasnt prepared to look after him. What had happened, is that she'd literally only just given birth -- hadn't even passed the afterbirth yet, is holding her blood-coated, crying, newborn baby to her chest -- and a nurse asked what her feeding plan was. She was tired from the birth and distracted by the brand new baby in her arms and thrown off by the timing of the question, but still, she managed to answer, and said she planned to breastfeed him whenever he was hungry.
Well apparently that wasn't enough of a plan for the hospital staff, who reported her and claimed that she was unprepared to look after the child, and claimed that had no social supports, and that the baby was at risk if left with her. All because a brand new mother, 30 seconds after giving birth, didn't have a PowerPoint presentation ready to go that cited the timing cycle she would feed her kid on, and instead simply said that she would feed him when he was hungry.
Child Protection services showed up, took her kid, and she was told to show up to court the next day to contest custody if she wanted her baby back.
So a woman who had given birth less than 24 hours prior was forced to rally her family and show up to court to prove that she a) had a feeding plan for the child, and b) had enough social supports to justify reclaiming her baby.
It was one of the most appalling things I'd ever seen. I don't even know if she won her case. They didn't know at the time we saw them, and after that brief interaction on the stairs, i never saw them again. I sincerely hope she got her newborn baby back.
That was about 5 years ago. And the exact same kind of thing is still happening today.
News broke today from a South Australian whistle-blower of the appalling treatment new mothers frequently receive, including hospital staff taking the baby away from the mother "for medical tests," only for the mother to then be told, with absolutely no prior warning, that the baby was not going to be returned to her.

Fundraiser masterpost
Latest update: 21/04/2024.
This is a masterpost for the evacuation fundraisers I've vetted so far, a few other fundraisers I find trustworthy but have not been able to vet (inability to communicate with the organizer), and a few semi-completed fundraisers or fundraisers for a different purpose (like house rebuilding, or aid distribution). The numbers next to the names have no significance beyond ease of navigation for me for when I check their progress in the future. You should look at the disclaimers instead and focus on those. Occasionally I will update these with new info, including new fundraisers, and the amount of cash that's been raised. Check in regularly on the original post when you see it being reblogged. In all likelihood once its reached you it's already outdated. Also please don't overlook the Sustainable Aid options near the bottom! The brain drain is already creating problems but having another way of keeping or creating new knowledge and key members of a functioning society is important.

Lord, Heal our land
Good day to each and everyone. I would like to ask your sincerest help and PRAYERS for my land Mindanao, especially in Region 11, Davao Region where me and my relatives live.
Last Jan 16, 2024 we experience an imaginable flooding and we were evacuated to a safety area because of the shear line that causes the heavy and nonstop rainfall, all of the houses in the area was partially damage and uninhabitable but as the rain slows down we went back to our houses to clean and check if its okay to be back home. Then Just today Jan. 18, 2024, we are force to evacuate again as the shear line that causes the worst flooding in the history of our province takes place. Some of us are now staying in the evacuation area. Crowded, unease and all of us still absorbing what just happened, thinking how we will gonna recover from the disaster that we just experience, not to mention a month ago, Tropical Storm #Kabayan (Jelawat) hit the Philippines and our region was the center of the storm. I thought it would be the last time that I will experience such flooding but its only the beginning, this shear line was the worst! As the saying goes, calm before the storm, I now understand that :(
Some brigdes had collapes due to strong current of the flood (some photos are not mine but from my friends who had the courage to go to this danger and impassable zone)
Thankful for the rescuers who priorities the kids, elderly and pwd ( God is good all the time)
This video was just the beggining of the flood after a couple of hours, the water raises to 5ft and it makes our sitio, impassable. Only heavy and big vehicle can pass.
This happened Mindanao wide, some photos I upload are not meant to disturb other people who had phobia in this kind of situation but to imphasize how big the damage this shear line had cause us. In other province, there were landslide that killed a family of 7 (May there soul rest in peace) and in some areas there are reported missing.
Help me pray for my mother land. I hope this calamity end and no casualty anymore. I hope the Almighty give the rescuers and people who sacrifice there life to save others the stregnth and courage they need.
Im dearly asking help monetary or in kinds not just for me and my family but also for my relatives and friends who are now in the evacuation area.
The government is providing food as much they can but they cant cater everything that we need because thousands of family were in different evacuation centers in the region plus some government help will take sometime because some road are not passable due to landslide.
We are in need of:
- Milk powder for babies
- Food for babies (Soft biscuits, cerelac)
- Distilled water (running out of it)
- Disinffectant / ointment
- Blanket and pillow (This is much need)
- Hygiene Kit
- Extra food for those who didnt leave their houses (most men in each family, stayed to look/guard their houses)

UPDATE#1:
As of now, we still experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Some of us went back home to clean and see the damages in our houses but the rain pours hard that we decided to go back to evacuation immediately.
The main road from the city and other provinces still not passable due to the landslide and broken road. Trucks and other vehicle that carries the relief good intended for us still stranded because of the road closure.
UPDATE#2:
Today we experience scartthered thurderstorm, strong wind and a possible flood and landslide warning was issued. Still didn't receive any kinds of donation. Hoping someone can give a headstart to boost this post.
UPDATE#3:
This is not looking good to us, especially here in Mindanao. That black cloud in the center is another problem for us. As of now, almost all people are in the evacuation area. Only few were left in our sitio to guard the houses. The weather bulletin says a big one is coming. Please continue reblogging my post and help us pray to avoid any casualty.. #LordHealOurLand
UPDATE#4:
The government has stop given us cooked food or pack lunch because they say we already received relief goods but with all honesty we only received each family 5kgs. of rice. So each one of us went home every day jsut to cook rice. No canned goods and no noodles for us. Please consider even a littl help please.
UPDATE#5:
The other day we already went home because we thought itbisnsafe to go home but tonight we were evacuated agian because of the strong wind and heavy rain, again this weather is called shearline. I hope if you have spare please consider helping us. Thank you!
UPDATE#6:
Its almost 5am, its been nonstop raining for almost 24hrs. The water level on river, creeks and sea are rising. Last night it was already overflowing but no significant amount of water that can cause us to panic, low tide also helps but today. Its already ankle level fast rising in no time knee level. My family and other families already evacuated last night but I choose to stay here in the house to monitor the water level and to watche for my dog who recwntly delivers 5 puppies. The bad weather is caused by LPA (Low Pressure Area). Stronger than the shearline :(
UPDATE:
THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER. OUR SITUATION HERE IN MINDANAO CAN BE FOUND ONLINE OR IN THE NEWS. AFTER THE DEVASTATION OF THE SHEARLINE, THE 'TROUGH OF LPA' IS GIVING US CALVARY. WE BEEN EXPERIENCING UNENDING RAIN SINCE THE PAST WEEK, ALL CLASSES AND SOME WORK ARE SUSPENDED. I HOPE PEOPLE WHO WILL ABLE TO READ THIS, TAKES OUR SITUATION SERIOUSLY, PLEASE PRAY AND HELP US WITH IN KIND OR MONETARY DONATIONS PLEASE 01/31/24

This was a crazy day for everyone of us who lives in Mindanao and its freezing! I cant handle this kind of cold. What we really need right now is something to keep us warm, like blanket and thick clothes. Which most of us don't have and a hot beverage and soup is a must :(
Update: Unfortunately the 'Trough of Low pressure" will be in Mindanao for the rest of the week and the Red rainfall alert is not lifted yet. You can check on the internet about our weather system here and its crazy. Haven't receive anything yet, I'm still hoping to receive donations so I can buy some food and warm beverage for me and my love ones. I cant update always because the internet signal is on and off.

Accessibility should not be an afterthought, especially when it comes to radical events
Remember the 6 year old girl who was surrounded by Israeli tanks and the red crescent couldn't reach her? Her name is Hind Hamadeh. Here you can hear the phone call her 15 year old sister, Layan Hamadeh, made with the medics. She was killed exactly a moment later including all people in the car, except for 6 year old Hind who was stuck in the car with the dead bodies of her family, Israeli tanks and IDF surrounding her, shooting, preventing anybody to reach her.
That was last night (29.1.24). Today, still nothing. The fate of Hind remains unknown.
palestine red crescent ambulance team went to rescue her yesterday evening, but they have not returned as of now. We lost contact with them about 18 hours ago, and we still remain unaware of their fate and whether they succeeded in evacuating her or not.
Please, share Hind's story as much as you can on any platform. We need to know what happened to her. Put yourself in her place, how terrified she must be. Don't scroll past this.
This is Hind.

Alt text is an accessibility tool for many people, primarily those who are blind or visually disabled. It is not appropriate to ever use it as a punchline for a joke to tell a joke. Doing so takes away its reliability and trustworthiness. There are people who are INCAPABLE OF SEEING AN IMAGE OR FULLY SEEING AN IMAGE OTHERWISE. Using alt text to tell jokes HURTS THESE PEOPLE.
This post has like 8,000 notes. I'm so disappointed in how many people think this okay, but even more sad that many people don't understand how this is harmful or what alt text is even for. Please don't propagate or encourage these jokes. You are misusing and actively harming an accessibility tool. If you didn't know that this is what it was for, now you do know! - it’s okay to use your turn signal when you’re changing lanes
- it’s okay to use your turn signal when you’re taking an exit
- it’s okay to use your turn signal when you plan on turning (can even be done sooner than 2 seconds before you’re about to turn)
- you have a turn signal. in your vehicle. two of them in fact.
- you are so brave and beautiful and smart and can do it. using your turn signal
On May 19 Sgt. Michael Kunovich deemed him suspicious while outside the Super 8 motel parking lot. Aguilar Mendez was sitting down eating but started to walk away when the officer approached in his patrol vehicle. Kunovich began to question him, but Aguilar Mendez couldn't understand him or communicate well and repeated that he was sorry. That's when Kunovich decided to search him, and Aguilar Mendez resisted. Two other deputies arrived to assist in taking the 5-foot-4, 115-pound teen to the ground as Kunovich repeatedly stunned him with his taser, all seen on body-worn camera video. Aguilar Mendez can be heard screaming for his family and is seen trying to gain control of the taser as the officers note in the video. Toward the end of the 6-minute scuffle, the deputies saw that their handcuffed suspect had a small folding knife and disarmed him. Kunovich collapsed a short time later in medical distress and died at the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Aguilar Mendez, who came here from Guatemala, was staying with other farmworkers at the hotel. He is being detained without bail, which is the subject of another hearing as yet to be decided. I'm going to need you all to start spreading awareness about this case and sign the petition. I'm a 5'4 woman and I weigh more than him. He's only 18, indigenous and doesn't understand English nor Spanish really. I can't imagine how confused and scared he was. Tased 6 times and apologizing repeatedly and calling out for his family... he is not responsible for the police officer's death. The fact he's been held for 8 months without bail is disgusting.
Virgilio looks so small, sad and defeated in all of the images I've seen of him.
If you want to know what happened to the officer (from the linked Yahoo article):
The medical examiner ruled Kunovich’s death was “natural,” caused by an irregular heartbeat, due to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, according to a 44-page incident report. The medical examiner also listed “physical exertion and possible emotional stress while apprehending a fleeing suspect” as contributing causes. [...] “As the body camera footage will come out and show you, it was by the book, textbook,” Hardwick said of the arrest at a May 24 news conference. Hardwick said Kunovich “succumbed to some medical issues that were induced by the struggle with our subject.”
Even if the incident contributed to Kunovich's death, it is not reasonable, logical, or humane to hold Aguilar Mendez responsible. Kunovich made his own decision to escalate the situation to violence. If we must blame the arrest itself, then if the arrest were "textbook" (it appears it wasn't), it logically follows that what killed him was his own training and work culture. Personally, given the evidence presented, I don't feel that any entity is responsible for Kunovich's death, except maybe an act of God. Justice for Aguilar Mendez.
