It's weird how comedy as its own film category kind of died. They basically just put jokes into everything now. I looked up what the 2024 comedy films were and got recommended deadpool and a bunch of dark satires. I never LIKED most movies that were "just" comedy like all that adam sandler rob schneider junk but its still strange how a whole major genre evaporated.

To point the finger at capitalism again, I think it was because comedies were projects that yeilded secure but small profits. You can't really make a big budget comedy that is not a great risk.

Also, the franchiseitazion of movies these days does not allow for a continuing string of comedies. How do you attach a comedy to an existing franchise of superheroes? Or Fantasy books? Those are based on drama, action and tragedy.

Sure there were comedy franchises in the past but they were original like police academy or they parodied current trends like the Scary Movie franchise did.

I did not expect much from maia arson crimew but its essay is really, really bad

organizing is uhhh going to see a local band and having a polycule

this is what marxist-leninists mean when we say "vibes based politics"

joining a political party-literally the most concrete and productive thing you can do-"feels too hollow", but partying and fucking and hanging out, creating a desperate localized simulation of prosperity without actually addressing any of the issues in the world around you, that's revolution

but it's not. it's cope at best, and actively detrimental idealism that undermines any real revolutionary activity. the liberals and the nazis organize while we suck and fuck and stay in our little bubbles doing nothing but bonding over how useless we'll be when it's time to do something, too divided and disorganized to challenge any opposition meaningfully.

we sit idle while the enemy mobilizes and closes in around us-the story of anarchism time and time again.

also, I don't want to give the impression that bonds are not important. but to simply concede that would ignore the ideological construction, because we're not just talking about bonds. how are these bonds to be actualized and consummated? through consumption, decadence and overall idle behavior. through rhetorical omission, organizing within a political party does not constitute bonding, "real" and "genuine" human connections, it's "hollow" and "just politics". but going to shows and fucking does.

this framing betrays the disposition of the entire piece, at its play-acting over revolution. it doesn't want to create a new form of relation, actualized in revolutionary activity and shared struggle, it wants to take refuge in these old forms of relation and re-cast them as radical.

here it is explicitly cast as lesser–less effective, less intimate, less revolutionary–to organize and take up arms and plan and strategize to transform the world. are these the words of a revolutionary or a reactionary?

It’s just that the thing is that this show is about characters who love each other so so much and it’s so so useless because of the environment that surrounds them and the oppression at the center of their society. Jinx loves vi and it’s driven her insane. Vi loves jinx and it’s destroying her because of who this person who she oboes has become. Jayce loves viktor and it drove him to disrespect viktors wishes, viktor loves Jayce but not enough to stay with him. Jayce loves Mel and he put her in an awful position multiple times. Mel loves Jayce but she doesn’t trust him. Vi loves Caitlyn but can’t get over the division between them. Caitlyn loves vi but doesn’t respect the part of her that defines so much of who she is. Mel loves ambessa and is terrified of her and ambessa loves Mel so much that she considers her a weakness. Silco loved jinx and destroyed himself for it. Jinx loved silco and she killed him.

And then of course there’s the very beginning of the show: vander loved Silco and tried to murder him. Silco loved vander and DID murder him, even though he didn’t want to, and it set of a chain of events that created many the conflicts of this story

The love was there, and none of it mattered at all

The "tactics" of torture, forced disappearance, and clandestine warfare used by the Argentine military dictatorship of 1976-1983 were taught to the Argentine military by their French military "professors," who used them extensively in their miserable attempts to maintain their empire over Vietnam, Algeria and other countries. These techniques of state terror were first used in French colonial violence, and then were applied here, with the approval of Plan Cóndor supported by the United States. The same tortures that were inflicted on Vietnamese peasants and Algerian activists were also inflicted on Argentine students, the same cruelty that the military dictatorships used from Mexico to Chile was dictated as a method at the School of the Americas. In Argentina, 30.000 people were forcibly dissapeared, tortured, raped and killed, and countless others were brutally repressed with scars they, and our entire society, still bear today.

Here is an article (in Spanish) about it.

Imperialism is a never-ending fractal of cruelty.

The Blackhand Spider (Titanidiops sublectus) has adapted to living in human dwellings by building its burrow under our beds and furniture.

After growing to its mature size, it finds a suitable burrow where it waits up to several months. It strikes when prey gets a hand or ankle too close, injecting a powerful paralyzing venom and releasing its young to feed on the victim while still alive.

queer people on this site really make me feel like a confused straight guy at pride. the discourse here could kill a man

"why polyamorous people aren't valid" "mspec lesbians AREN'T okay actually" "aroallos are freaks" "he/him dni. cis men dni" "this post is for non-men only" yessss and the one with long hair goes in the girl box, then the one with short hair goes in the boy box!!

maybe I'm just a boring he/him white guy but inventing about 7 trillion terms to define "man" and "woman" so you can reinforce gender essentialism isn't very "love is love" of you. maybe i just don't have a sexuality but picking and choosing what sexualities are normal and which ones are "weird and predatory" sounds like we're all a bunch of republicans on fox news. if you attend your local pride parade and look REAAALLLYYY closely, you'll notice you can't actually tell if someone's gay or not from their appearance, and there's no way to know if they're "invading queer spaces". maybe it's just me, but when i attended my local gaybar last night for the drag show, they didn't ask for my gay-card with a peer reviewed diagnosis of faggot stamped on it. they just let me in the building. i live a life of bliss and luxury in not caring about any queer discourse ever, and just going "WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY :-)" while booting up the latest cod game. and it seems much more fun than whatever the fuck you people are on about

muting my notifs for this post but i need to acknowledge this first. My favorite tags fr 🙏

If your vision for the deradicalization of right-wing men begins and ends with "other men telling them that that's gross and to stop it" then I'm sorry, you do not understand how masculinity works.

"Men who hold patriarchal status" and "men who are feminists" are two groups who overlap less than you want them to. I'm sorry. That's not solely because men are so happy with patriarchal status that they don't want to risk it by policing misogyny/queerphobia/racism, It's because being misogynistic, queerphobic, and racist, end expressing other forms of toxic masculinity(and often abusively so) are part of how people establish and maintain patriarchal status. The men who have the ability to stop this via nothing but peer pressure are the very people who are doing it. That's by design. And engaging in feminist intervention is, in and of itself, usually the abrupt end of that status and its associated power to persuade misogynistic men.

Like, I have worked in blue collar jobs as a notably queer person. It was pretty much a constant deluge of verbal abuse. In my experience, most blue collar work environments are exploitative, abusive, and bigoted, and very gleefully so. On the occasions I have spoken up about someone saying something that was super fucking out of line (asking me which of the girls walking by was hottest. We were installing a portable classroom at a middle school), believe it or not, they completely failed to be shamed! Because nobody else on the crew gave a fuck. *I* was the weird one. They ghosted me. A full blown company ghosted me. I suddenly didn't have a job anymore because they just straightforwardly stopped telling me where the next job site was.

Like, this doesn't mean that it's your job to do it, but this vision you have of these big groups of men where everyone is on the fence and there is precisely one shit stirrer who can be shut down by a brave feminist man who can single handedly set the example for all these other guys...you are high. You are describing an "everybody clapped" level absurd scenario. Most of these truly virulent misogynistic guys either have zero friends, because, you know, our society is atomized to fuck, or they are in a group where the feminist guy is actually the weirdo who can be shut down and ostracized much, much easier than the misogynists, because there is no such thing as a man misogynists respect who stands up for women.

You might be saying "well, we're talking about longstanding personal relationships, actually. Like, they need to have to want to spend time with you and then, as a side effect, you can mind control them out of being a threat to us."

Problem with that being:

1: Many feminist men also have no friends, see the atomized society above.

2: Feminist men already stopped hanging out with men who make rape jokes because why the fuck would we want to spend time with them.

3: That isn't just because we respect women so hard. We are in many cases talking about men who are also deeply queerphobic, heirarchical, violent and abusive to other men. What initially drew me to feminism and women was a lack of heirarchical squabbling and constant bullying, and the ability to be openly queer. A lot of men who came to feminism did so because they knew that the patriarchy was not a place they would find success or acceptance. These are not the men who are gonna be able to change right wing minds.

4. Men do not view themselves as a monolith. There is no universal brotherhood of men. The actual meaning of the term "Fragile masculinity" is that men are constantly expected to prove that they are deserving of the status of being a member of their own gender. There are large swathes of men--including most of the men who you'd look to as examples of good, feminist men who you want to undertake this project--who are considered failed men, sissies, f****ts, soyboys, ect. They are. Not. Going. To. Convince. These. Men. Of. Jack. Shit. Much less successfully *shame* them. Jesus.

I know all of this sucks. I know it would be cool to be able to just point at a group and have them be responsible for the work. But nah. It's gonna have to be a societal project, one that will probably outlast all of us. Sorry. The thing you want these men to do is, absolutely, the morally correct thing to do. But presuming that it would be effective is, and once again I am so sorry about this, just ignorance of how these social groups function.

Idea: a post-apocalyptic novel complete with a young Chosen One where slowly you come to understand that in actuality it’s fourth-century Turkey and the chosen one is Santa Claus.

Seven years later I don’t remember writing this post but I do think it’s still a fantastic idea for a novel.
