something something Hozier saying "If I wanted to make a fucking pop song, I would." years ago, Too Sweet becoming his first #1, and then he hurriedly releases Nobody's Soldier (anti war-profiteering song) as a palette cleanser
I went to a Hozier show where he performed Jackboot Jump for the second time ever and he preceded it with a little speech about walking a fine line as an artist between subtlety & marketability of an idea versus being bold and explicit with messaging -> fast forward to 2024 and everyone completely misses the point of Too Sweet and bops along to "the coffee song"
The tragedy of Too Sweet is not that it's Hozier's first #1 despite being far from his best work. Yeah some of the lyrics are remedial by his standards, but who gives a fuck. I love that it got big. It's catchy and I bet it served as a gateway drug encouraging people to check out his other stuff. Fantastic, 10/10.
The tragedy of Too Sweet is that the nature of a song going viral through the clockapp led a whole bunch of listener's to believe it's a song about being too cool for complicated coffee orders. Too Sweet is as alive and layered as the rest of Hozier's discography. Too Sweet is about the trap of maximizing health and hygiene (sold to us with promises of extending your life, warding off wretched signs of aging) at the cost of getting the whole human experience.
It says "yeah, this hangover sucks, but you'll get it again and again because you'll be damned if last night's was your last-ever pint with the lads". The "coffee black" bit isn't about being tough for drinking black coffee so much as embracing the bitterness of life because it's what kicks your senses into the waking world after you've just barely dragged yourself out of bed. The titular line plays on the saying "too sweet to be savory". The song's an extension of the line from Nobody, "I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint / I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave." It's about literally falling down and hitting your head. It's an acknowledgement that sometimes you can really like someone but their lifestyle just doesn't mesh with yours. It's this stupid tweet:
supernatural is so funny. sometimes they'll look for God and say things like "try new mexico, I hear he's on a tortilla" "no, he's not on any flatbread" and then you get bangers like "freedom is a length of rope and God wants you to hang yourself with it".
