June 29th - Loki
Centuries ago the Asgardian king Odin led a battle against the Frost Giants and killed Laufey, the lord of Jotunheim Frost Giants. After he slew Laufey, Odin found a small child hidden in the Frost Giant’s lair. The infant was Loki, son of Laufey, who had been kept hidden due to the giant’s shame over having sired such a small and seemingly un-powerful son.
Odin took pity on the baby and decided to bring him back to Asgard where he raised him as his own alongside his biological son, Thor. Young Loki possessed vast magical powers, including shapeshifting (which he used to appear as an Asgardian and hide his Jotunheim roots).
Despite Odin’s best efforts to raise his sons as equals, Loki felt a great deal of alienation among the Asgardians as well as a fierce envy toward his adoptive brother Thor. Thor was the God of Thunder, heir to the throne of Asgard and respected and revered all throughout the realm. Whereas Loki was seen as the God of Mischief, a conniving trickster not to be trusted. The tremendous envy Loki came to feel toward his brother led him to concoct endless schemes to undermine him and take Thor’s place as the future king.
Thor’s love for Midgard (Earth) led to the brothers’ feud spilling over into the human world. As such Loki would go on to have encounters with countless heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe. Loki’s machinations eventually resulted in the initial formation of the Mighty Avengers and he would go on to have battles with additional heroes, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk and The X-Men.
Loki has been quite intrigued by the rigid notions of gender and sexuality maintained by so many of Midgard and Asgard. These matters are fluid in his thinking and he will often use his shapeshifting powers to change his sex as well as romantically pursue whomever catches his fancy. At the same time he has utilized the insecurities over these matters in others to his advantage. One of his favorite gambits was an incident where he used his magic to temporarily transform Thor into a woman (he had a lot of fun with that one).
Although frequently a villain, there have been many a time where Loki has found himself joining forces with his brother and other heroes against a superordinate threat. Loki would end up valiantly sacrificing himself to save the nine realms. Following this apparent death, Loki was reborn as a preadolescent-aged version of himself. This ‘Kid Loki’ would go on to have numerous adventures and helped to form the second iteration of the Young Avengers in order to put a stop to the destructive inter-dimensional parasite known as Mother.
Loki would eventually revert to his older self and continued to have all many of adventures. Loki has played a pivotal role in a number of the Marvel movies, where he has been portrayed by actor Tom Hiddleston. Loki first appeared in Journey Into Mystery Vol. 1 #85.
