Charles Xavier is a Mutant, possessing the X-gene and gifted with vast, potentially unparalleled telepathic powers. Xavier has dedicated himself to fulfill his dream of Mutants and humans coexisting peacefully. As a younger man, he traveled the world to better comprehend Mutantkind, meeting the fellow Mutant, Magneto; someone who would prove to be both a dear friend as well as a ruthless rival.
After becoming paralyzed from the waist down following a conflict against the villain called Lucifer, Xavier transformed his family’s ancestral home into the Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, a sanctuary for Mutants to train and learn about their abilities. Under his supervision, Xavier’s students formed the X-Men, a super-hero group who fight for a world that often hates and fears them, guided by Xavier’s dream of achieving harmony between humans and Mutants
Through the years, Xavier and his X-Men endeavored on numerous adventures and found themselves battling numerous threats. On many occasions the X-Men have faced off against Magneto, who believed in Mutant supremacy and formed his own group, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Following many encounters, Xavier and Magneto resolved their differences in order to best safeguard the continued survival of Mutantkind.
Xavier’s telepathic powers continued to group and enhance. These powers augmented to such an extent that Xavier became concerned that he could subconsciously manipulate those around him. To ensure against this, Xavier suppressed facets of his powers along with any unwanted thoughts, wishes and desires. Although this strategy worked in the short term, it would ultimately prove disastrously ineffective. The banished aspects of Xavier’s unconscious took on a life of its own, manifesting in the form of the powerful menace known as Onslaught. Fortunately the combined efforts of The X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four were able to defeat and destroy Onslaught.
More recently, in order to ensure the survival of the Mutant race, Xavier has assumed a harsher stance on the Mutant-human conflict. Influenced by the multiversal visions of Moira MacTaggart and assisted by Magneto, Xavier established a Mutant nation on the living island of Krakoa, granting citizenship to all Mutantkind. As a head of state of the Mutant nation, Xavier is currently responsible for a much larger community than solely the X-Men. To what extent the establishing of Krakoa will safeguard the future of Mutantkind remains to be told.
Xavier has featured in the Fox Films X-Men movies portrayed by actors Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy; Stewart has reprised the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Xavier first appeared in the pages of X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (1963).
