A noisy bar quickly becomes background white noise.

And within a breath, the world ceases to exist.

You’re not sure what you were expecting him to say, but it sure as hell isn’t that.

(He gets paid to be a smooth talker, but holy shit, it is catastrophically different when you’re saddled with the reality that you can walk — run — straight to the man inviting you to his home.)

There’s a spark in your gaze tonight, a light that makes Erwin want to gamble. Like a moth seeks a flame, he leans closer. 

“Dare.”

“I dare you..." You look around. "Ask anyone here on a date.”

Erwin’s blue gaze never leaves your face. He says your name, softly. “Go on a date with me?” 

“I... I’m pretty sure that’s cheating, 'Win.”

“You didn't specify.” 

“Don’t joke—“

“I’ve wanted to ask all along. My fault lies in only finding the courage to do so now.”  

You bite back a smile. Oh, you liked that.

(Erwin’s gamble might pay off after all.)

“Hey, has anyone ever given you a nickname?”

“No.”

Levi turns on his pillow, watching you.

You seem half-asleep. “M’gonna call you… beloved when we’re alone, m’kay?”

At that, Levi’s breath catches. “… Huh?”

“Beloved. Because that’s what… you—” A yawn. “—are to me.”

And then you’re asleep.

Levi, on the other hand, is now wide awake. His heart drums wildly.

Beloved… is he really?

Shit, it sounds so cheesy, he ought to tell you. But… he also liked the way it rolled off your tongue, liked that you bestowed it on him.

Fine.

Levi supposes there’s... worse things to be called.

Levi’s answer is, as usual, to say he’s “fine”—that he has paperwork to finish, that you should go to bed.

“Levi—“

“This is due in the morning.”

Despite his impassive expression, there's fatigue laced in his tone.

You approach him. “Hey… tell me, if you’re always looking out for others, who’s looking out for you?”

Levi stays silent.

“Let me help. Then we’ll head to bed together.”

A pause. And then—

“… Fine. Just for tonight.”

Later in bed, you swear Levi holds you tighter—grateful that there's someone looking out for him, too.

"Turn around."
