Levi enters Erwin’s office without a knock, placing a leave request on top of a stack of papers piled high on the Commander’s desk.

“I need to take some leave days two months from now.”

“Good morning to you too, Levi.” Erwin scans the paper. “For what, may I ask.”

“None of your damn business.”

Erwin’s eyes now glance toward Levi. “You’ve been different lately. Distracted.” He smirks. “A girlfriend in Trost, perhaps?”

“Tch, you’re delusional. So am I approved or not?”

“Approved.”

Levi turns to leave without another word.

“And Levi,” Erwin adds, “buy her flowers. Women like those.”

“Everything seems good. Baby’s heart sounds especially strong.”

Your midwife puts the cold stethoscope to your belly as you lay on your bed. You usually have these checkups alone, but Levi insisted he be here.

“I have some questions”, he’d said.

And he really did. Questions about what you should be eating and drinking, how many hours you should be sleeping each night, and what to do about the sudden discomfort in your abdomen you’d been feeling lately.

(How did he know about that?)

“And is there anything unhealthy we should be avoiding right now?”

“Drink this, it’ll help.”

Your third trimester has been difficult. You feel so tired and heavy, daily tasks feel like a burden. When Levi arrives at your door for his weekly visit, you can’t hold back the tears.

When he’s not here, you feel so alone. 

You take a sip of the warm tea as he sits down beside you.

“You should have sent for me. I would have come right away.” His tone is harsh.

“I didn’t want to bother you,” you reply. “You already do so much.”

Eyes softening, he takes your hand.

“You are never a bother.”
