Joe Mande: Bitchface reviewed
By CNTributor JM Cook
When I saw that Joe Mande -- known for his stand-up, Twitter prowess and work on "Parks and Recreation" -- was releasing a comedy mixtape I had many questions.
What is that?
That was my only question, actually.
Turns out, it is an interesting hybrid of a hip-hop mixtape and a traditional stand-up record. Who would have thought?!
A summary: this is a very funny album. It's worth the $5 on iTunes and I would certainly pay to see this tour (which hits Canada, the northeast and Pacific northwest, screw you middle America!) if it came close to me.
The album is streaming at Complex Music at the moment and I'd very much recommend listening to it.
"Bitchface" weaves in traditional hip-hop mixtape tropes (skits, drop-ins by people, a constant reminder that this is a mixtape) with Mande's stand-up.
Some of the best parts of the album are where Mande subverts these mixtape expectations. For example, during the album's outro, Mande gives shoutouts to a million random people ("Shout to Dr. Conrad Murray, shoutout to Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Dr. Sanjay Gupta") and it's funny enough that I would listen to him give shoutouts for 20 minutes.
If you've followed Mande's performances on late night talk shows, the material will be familiar. There's his "the first guy to milk a cow" bit and his riff on how crazy our Instagrams would be if they were developed photos.
One of the album's best moments is "Somalis" where he goes from trying to explain lakes ("It's fresh water filled with food") to a person from Somalia to explaining cold, then humidity, then eventually electricity ("Dude, I don't know. First you have to harness the power of the river? Then that turns into lightning you can control with your fingertips").
Hip-hop and stand-up comedy have always been close cousins and on "Bitchface" Mande finds a way to bring them even closer.
Possibly your last chance to see Todd do an entire show without any prepared material! Click on venue name for TICKETS!

I would write a longer tribute to the legendary Mitch Hedberg, but I think he'd like us to keep things short.
