not to overanalyze netflix's hyper realistic baking competition show "is it cake?" but i think part of the reason viewers complain about mikey day as host is due in part to the editing (i recognize his cringe humor may not be for everyone and i am a little biased in my mental illness that makes me like him). they never have mikey really organically interact with the contestants. the most effortless and natural interactions come from him and the guest judges (usually a good amount of them include people he already knows). he usually interacts with them at the beginning but during the baking process he's usually mia and only comes around to tell them the time, plus most of his interactions come from explaining the rules (which he's discussed makes it harder to add comedy but he understands the necessity of it). when he does joke (with or without the interactions of contestants) they always pick the most awkward fake laugh from the contestants to make it look like nobody finds him humorous (and who knows, maybe they don't). even when there are bits (like tiltscape) they feel very scripted and unnatural. if they had mikey interacting more with the gallery contestants and bakers during the process it'd come across less scripted/annoying and more like a regular baking competition. like yeah, maybe mikey IS a out there choice for hosting this (it baffles me and him how he landed this role) but like if they hired him you would think they'd try a bit harder to help him come across as funny/a good host.
