Whole-heartedly BEGGING writers to unlearn everything schools taught you about how long a paragraph is. If theres a new subject, INCLUDING ACTIONS, theres a new paragraph. A paragraph can be a single word too btw stop making things unreadable

Ok So I’m getting more notes than I thought quicker than I expected! So I’m gonna elaborate bc I want to. 

I get it, when you’re someone who writes a lot and talks a lot, it’s hard to keep things readable, but it’s not as much about cutting out the fat(that can be a problem) so much as a formatting issue. 

You are also actively NERFING yourself by not formatting it correctly, it can make impactful scenes feel so, so much better. Compare this, 

To THIS. 

Easier to read, and hits harder. 

No more over-saturated paragraphs. Space things out.

I’m an archivist, behold my growing collection was of old photos mirroring timeless memes I’ve come across at various places I’ve worked.

i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story

sometimes things are subtext because they don’t quite fit the tone of the story, or because the story isn’t about that (and if they showed it outright they would have to take time to explore it), or sometimes the characters aren’t ready to face it, or sometimes subtext is just the right choice for this specific story, or SOMETIMES it’s just fun and interesting to have underlying themes and implications!!!!

also just because it’s subtext doesn’t mean it’s not deliberate or not meant to be part of the story. “well if they WANTED it to be canon they should’ve SAID SO” some of us can understand implications. some of us enjoy thinking about the media we consume and don’t just want everything handed to us on a silver platter. “wow i can’t believe the writers didn’t even realize what this implies” im going to beat you to death with hammers

Shared here as part of the worldbuilding for my wlw novel Hymn of Sand and Stars. Another page from the journals of Brother Marcus, a wandering priest from Salta sworn in service to Mirastír the Creatress. Though even the indomitable Brother had little success in reaching the shores of the elusive Grey Isle, he shares some insights on the custom of Tokens.

Few outsiders can claim to have set foot on the Grey Isle of Liathilean and, despite my best efforts, I cannot count myself among them. I once spent a sennight on the rock they call The Threshold, hoping to negotiate passage with a local boat. I might as well have been holding a flame while doused in oil, the Cerddaini captains were so reluctant to carry me across. In the shadow of a whalebone arch, I observed what I could of the Liathilean folk whenever they came ashore. None would speak to me except to trade and even then they mostly remained hooded and reticent. I did learn of their Tokens, however, from a Maiden’s Cove trader who fed his family by selling interesting trinkets at the Threshold for the Liathileani to weave into their hair.

Every adult on Liathilean, male or female, wears their hair long and hung with decorations called Tokens. Strands at the temples are braided,-
