Today I visited the small German town of Mainz, where they were excavating for a mall and accidentally found the ruins of a joint temple for the cults of Cybele and Isis. So now one of the totally ordinary looking storefronts in the mall just contains a set of stairs that leads down to this.

the Mainz temple is something I came across totally by surprise while trying to help Rocket find some cool places to visit while in Germany. here’s some stuff about it.

  • it’s estimated to have been in use from 100-300 CE or so, around the arrival of the Roman empire in modern France and Germany
  • the temple was rediscovered during construction for the mall Rocket mentioned in 1999, buried 5m underground
  • developers were going to knock it down and build over it but locals got over 10 000 petition signatures to keep it and the town sided with them
  • archaeologists found over 300 oil lamps among the offerings to the goddesses
  • they also found burnt remnants of figs, dates, grain, eggs, chicken bones, and pine nuts
  • among the nonperishable votives were prayer tablets, statuary offerings, coins, effigies of other deities, THIRTY-FOUR curse tablets, and two magic clay poppets covered in pin pricks (despite Roman law forbidding magic)
  • some inscribed prayers requested divine intervention from Attis as well as Cybele, both individually and as a divine couple
  • apparently when Roman legions arrived, the land on which the sanctuary was eventually built was already considered sacred
  • this Mainz temple is the first one ever found outside of Italy to honor Isis and Magna Mater

anyway if you find yourself in Germany apparently it’s a very cool museum setup and not far from Frankfurt
