*hands on stomach, staring at ceiling* I wonder what it was like for Atin on the journey to Mandalore from Coruscant after the bridge.
I mean, the man had already lost his whole squad twice, is all I’m saying.
This just in, transferring from Dreamwidth to Tumblr is way more annoying than the other way around. This post can also be found here, where anon commenting is (or should be) allowed.
I want to talk about Mereel's introduction, because I think it's one of my absolute favorites in the whole series. It's like the Jaws theme in written form.
Was flicking through my Order 66 notes, and we know Kal has pictures from Kamino of the Nulls and some of his commando squads, including Theta. Photos are important. You don't even usually realize how important until you're looking at them.
You think he shares them with Omega? They would never think to ask, probably wouldn't even realize it was a thing, but I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t if it came up, even if he doesn’t think of it himself. Niner seeing Two-Eight again, and the squad he lost to Geonosis, and being struck by how young they all look to him now (they were, what, physically eighteen when they died? And Two-Eight even younger?), and Darman being able to see Theta, and Fi.
You think he’d have shared those pictures with Fi while he was recovering? If Vau was the one taking the pictures, that would mean he probably has both of Atin's squads, too. Pictures of Sev. And all the commando squads out there who are the subject of those photos but don't get to know they exist. There isn't much point to this, lol, it just made me think about these guys seeing those photos the first time. Watch Atin promptly take up photography with a fervor.
...
A moment of silence for Besany, please.
I wanted to talk a little about the hauling 8-year-olds into active war zones thing, and how I’ve sort of come to the conclusion that it’s not even remotely standard practice. It seems to me it’s more likely very specifically a “those Skiratas are weird as fuck but they keep to themselves so we don’t really do anything about it” kind of a deal instead.
Prime evidence: Munin.
In response to this ask but it got hella away from me and didn’t fit the tone anymore so I split it up! I put too much googling into this to not post it.

I'm having a stressful time at work and I’m compensating by overdoing it with amateur speculation about food production on fake!homesteads. I’m about to go Deeper than I probably should, and I have only the barest bones of an idea of what I’m talking about, so if that's not what you're here for, Get Out Now. Save Yourself. Do Not Click Below The Link.
Me, literally every time the Kyrimorut crowd talks about or tries to “treat” Arla:
ordo coming face to face with the horrifying reality of where bacon comes from
I have a feeling Kal didn’t think things through when he brought all six of the Nulls to live on a farm.
Consider:
Kal, paraphrasing that thing he tells himself and others, constantly: You have to understand. The Kaminoans messed with their genes. They bond instantly, and if they like you, they have an unshakeable devotion. They’ll die for you. If they don’t, it’s “instant death on legs”. And there’s no in between.
Kal, shrugging: That’s just how it is. It can’t be helped.
Also Kal, to Ordo:
mmhmmm
r i g h t
(I don’t think they’re limited to people, Kal.)
also Ordo, earlier, in what makes this now a theme:
So I am just saying that come slaughtering time Kal is going to have a fucking crisis on his hands, you mark my words.
If this doesn’t end with Ordo attempting to sneak his babies to safety in his shirt I’m gonna riot.
Not giggles.
Maze has TOUCHED DOWN on Mandalore and holy SHIT do I have problems. Cut because it’s mostly rage down there.
This is not meta this is just giggles.
My absolute favorite scene in 501st is the one where the Nulls go to retrieve Niner and Darman only to have them both behave like cats who wanted the door open:
Jaing knows what’s up. He’s not wrong. They really are the two most dramatic members of Omega squad. Darman of the “I’m going to kick my sergeant out of the crashing aircraft against orders” school of thought and Niner, Mr. “We’ll believe Darman’s dead when HELL FREEZES OVER” and “I’m gonna FIGHT A NULL over ETHICS in the MIDDLE OF A MISSION I don’t GIVE a FUCK”.
This is going to be a five act tragecomedy if it kills them, basically. They know no other way.
Fi, where the FUCK did that come from?
Biggest bucket of ice water moment in 501st?
Straight from my notes: oh holy fuck holy shit they did this on PURPOSE
Okay, I can talk about an Order 66 thing now.
I think Niner is one of the only characters in the series we see able to go toe-to-toe with Kal, and I wanted to talk about it. That’s it, that’s the post.
Here’s why:
The chapter header is from THE biggest manipulator in the Star Wars franchise, about how he does what he does. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it leads into the chapter where Kal Skirata, self-confessed manipulator extraordinaire, is forced to face actual consequences for just a few of his shittier actions. The chapter is supposed to be about Darman vs Kal Skirata, but actually the confrontation that interested me the most was the one he had with Niner.
LEV
also something about how I’m not sure exactly what I’m feeling about Scorch turning up out of the woodwork multiple times at this point to cram himself in with Omega--demanding attention from Niner in particular--with Boss and Fixer nowhere in sight, but whatever it is I’m simultaneously very sad and very amused.
*phone goes flying* holy SHIT
NINER. NINER READ THE ONE ABOUT CULTS.
NINER READ THE ONE ABOUT CULTS
(in real news, though: Niner cracking into the mysterious and illicit psychology texts they were told all their lives could never apply to them to try to understand what’s happening with Darman and how to help just...hits somehow. Niner trying to TEACH HIMSELF PSYCHOLOGY. Feeling his way through this whole new language to try to deal with what’s happened-will happen-is happening to Darman and to him. Their situation is so fucked up and there’s something about this that just really highlights it: Niner stowing himself out of the way, struggling through medical texts, searching for the vocabulary to understand a very basic part of them that they were denied all their lives; it’s...a hell of a mental image. And also: I love Niner. I don’t feel like I’ve said that recently.)
(but also I want Niner and his new diet of psychology research to land on Kyrimorut and spend most of his time in a corner hands folded in front of his face squinting at everything like hmmmm. hmmMMM. HMMMMMMMMMM. Until he has acquired enough Facts to have that blazing row with Kal he’s been putting off since Order 66.) (New headcanon: Good Ending for Niner is he gets proper training as a psychologist and spends the rest of his life neck-deep in brothers he can help. It’s a Thing now.)
I sort of hate how KT stripped Scout’s character and history down to the bare bones so she could give Kal an Etain 2.0 so he could absolve himself of his shitty, abusive behavior without having to do any actual growth whatsoever.
