It was stupid, so stupid. They needed the food; game is scarce in this duchy of dense, small farms, and the people wary and watchful. It was stupid of him to think he could get away with apples and bread and chicken; he should have just taken the chicken, so that at least Iesin could have eaten something.
All of this flashes through Talvos’ mind in the time it takes for a guard’s hand to close around his arm, for his first tug to free himself to fail, and for the second guard to draw their sword. His hand closes on the hilt of his knife, and then the guard’s sword tips his chin up, and Talvos’ hand relaxes, slipping loose and open against his side.
“Thieving, were you?”
It’s a useless question; they’ve already pulled the apples and bread out of his bag, and as another pair of hands reaches in, the crinkle of butcher’s paper meets Talvos’ ears and the guard lets out a pleased exclamation.
