Mao Asada Finishes Her First Marathon
On December 10th, Mao participated in the JAL Honolulu Marathon and finished running her first marathon. Her goal was to finish under 4 hours and 30 mins, and she finished in 4 hours 34 mins and 13 seconds. “I wasn’t able to achieve my goal for time, so [I give myself] 80 points,” she reflected.
It was a first marathon with ups and downs. “I ran really lightly at first, but my body started hurting at around 10-15km, but I recovered, and then my body felt heavy again after passing 20km. That kept repeating itself.” Even so, she said “It’s my first gold medal in a while so I’m happy!” with a smile on her face after receiving a gold medal for completing the marathon.
Hawaii, where the marathon took place, is a place full of memories for Mao. After acquiring a silver medal at the Vancouver Olympics, she traveled there with her now deceased beloved mother and sister Mai. December 9th, the day before the race, was her mother’s death anniversary. “I have very wondrous memories of Hawaii because it’s been 7 years since I traveled here with Mom and Mai. Mai came today, and I’m sure Mom was watching too, so I’m glad I finished the marathon.” Tears flowed as she embraced Mai, who cheered her on.
In the competitive skating world, they are participating in the Grand Prix Final and training for Nationals with thoughts of the Olympics around this time. It’s been 8 months since Mao’s retirement press conference in April. She’s separated from competition and isn’t aiming for Pyeongchang, but she firmly said “I challenged myself and learned my limits, and it’s a decision I made after worrying and thinking. I have no lingering regrets at all.”
“I’ll be starting a new project next year. For anything and everything, there’s uneasiness and worry with doing something for the first time, but also the happiness and joy of being able to challenge something new.”
“I want to head towards what I have to do next without stopping. This isn’t only for skating. If there’s something I want to do, I want to challenge it.”
my florida ass after looking at this: gets the chills, turns the heat up to 80 degrees, grabs 5 blankets from closet, drinks entire bucket of freshly boiled water,
my brazilian ass, that once started crying cause it was 20° and that was unbearably cold and is dressed in winter clothes at 23°: sets herself on fire
my northern european ass: it isn’t officially christmas until you’ve rolled in the snow butt naked and gone swimming in ice covered water
things she did: that
Big mood tbh
