Kinn’s voice in episode 5: Kinn, respectfully, go to therapy

Izzy back with another vocal analysis, this one ft. the many tears I shed over having to rewatch Porsche go through it multiple times, all for you guys. I didn’t have as much time this week to write my thoughts out, so I’ve tried to keep this post short and snappy as much as possible.

So let’s jump right in!

The morning after scene.

What strikes me most about Kinn’s voice in this scene is how well he balances a tone that’s calm/controlled without the infusion of authority that usually comes with that control. Kinn has already created distance between them, begun to redraw the line that was all but crossed out the previous night, but he’s not quite ready to let go of the vulnerability he felt with Porsche. Even with the edge of aloofness in his voice, there’s still tenderness there, concern, guilt. He’s torn between speaking as a boss to an employee, and speaking as a lover, as an equal. There’s a moment when this conflict cracks his voice open a little as he asks if Porsche is okay, even repeating himself when the question goes unanswered. It’s not quite an opening for a further expression of intimacy, if that makes sense, but it’s something close. And with Porsche’s response, his need to be alone, Kinn has his confirmation that Porsche doesn’t want that intimacy, not from him. He pulls his voice back into that control, and by the time he leaves the room, the line is halfway drawn again.

As Damen lowered Laurent onto their bedding, watching him pool on the sheets like liquid gold, a feeling blossomed that was both familiar and luminously new.  The evening’s coronation had changed something fundamental between them.  It shouldn’t have, but it did, and Damen was dazed in the wake of it.

“I like you in silk.” He whispered the words into golden hair, his hands braced on each side of Laurent’s head.  Slender fingers reached up to pull him closer, but he held stiff where he was.  It seemed sacrilegious to touch.

“You’ll like me better out of it.”  Laurent’s tone betrayed an edge of frustration, of wanting.

Pushing up, Damen looked down at him.  He traced a reverent finger across the crown, askew on Laurent’s head.

“You look regal.”

“That was the idea.”

“Laurent.”

there were at least four palpable moments i legitimately thought a kiss was happening: first right before yuuri went out on the ice for the free skate, then again when it looked like they were setting up a parallel to ep7 with the run to the kiss and cry, then that stupidly flirty moment after the medal ceremony, then finally during the pair skate

and again in hindsight i’m not surprised they didn’t happen based on the conversations around ep7 from the staff leaving everything ambiguous, but i REALLY thought they would happen and i wanted them

the layer of plausible deniability is extremely, extremely thin but if i ask for one thing in season 2–other than yuuri finally winning his gold–it’s that that layer finally crumbles.

But hey guys at least not everything is garbage today.
