Can someone recommend some twiyor identity reveal fics with angst but a good ending 🫶🏻
I have been called. I must answer.
I’m gonna sort this by ratings just so you’ll know what you’re getting into with each.
“if i sing, will yesterday come back?” by angelsmoonlight — General Rating, No Warnings Apply
This one is a pretty unique take on the identity reveal compared to how a lot of other fics handle it. It’s written in the first person from Yor’s POV, so it also pretty different on a format level from a lot of its peers. The premise is that Loid has up and vanished without a word, and Yor is rightfully pretty upset about that. She keeps hoping to hear from him again, but it isn’t until she goes in his room for the first time in months that she finds out what’s going on. I won’t go into more detail than that, but it honestly got me a little misty-eyed while reading it. Absolutely worth a read.
“It will come out a rose by a rose” by Talik_Sanis — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply
This fic revolves around Yor patching Loid up after Twilight had a run-in with the Thorn Princess. It plays a lot with the way Yor’s mind works as she tries to unravel everything she’s learning, and how both of them dance around the topic without addressing it outright. The prose this writer uses is always a delight, and this one is one of their best. A top recommendation of mine for sure!
“Say You Love Me (And I’ll Tell You The Truth)” by peachycarat — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply
Yor starts to realize how she really feels about Loid, only for things to complicate themselves with the big reveal. The first chapter is Yor’s POV up to the big reveal, and the second chapter is Loid’s POV as they desperately try to hide each other’s identities from The Garden and WISE. It has plenty of angst, but there’s plenty of levity that keeps it balanced out. Can’t beat a great hurt/comfort fic!
“In Love With the Distance” by Newt — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply
This story actually starts right with the big reveal and Twilight being forced to flee after his cover gets compromised. Most of the fic is told through deciphered messages between Loid and Yor after they get separated, with the two keeping each other up to date on what’s going on and dancing around the fact that they’re in love with each other and Loid needs to get his ass home already. Chapter 16 and 17 are probably the hardest I’ve laughed at a fic in years, and no fic in this fandom has made me scream “LOID YOU STUPID SON OF A BITCH” as hard as this fic has made me around 2/3 of the way through it. It’s one of the only epistolary fics I’ve read in this fandom, and it’s such a delight from start to finish. Would absolutely recommend giving it a shot.
“Ad Infinitum” by LetTheBodyFall — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply
Yor sneaks back home severely injured and locks herself in her room. Loid picks up on something being wrong and starts tending to her wounds while trying to shield Anya from seeing her mother in such a state. The parts with Anya especially really twist the knife, so you’re definitely getting the angst you signed up for with this story. It ends on a really sweet note, though, and the banter between Loid and Yor at the end is perfect.
“person of interest” by suchmadness — Teen Rating, Graphic Depictions of Violence
More often than not, I’m not huge on soulmate AU fics, but this fic is a wonderful exception. In this version of it, soulmates can write on themselves and it appears on the other’s skin. Yor never got a response from her’s, so she goes on thinking that her soulmate just isn’t interested in her. Things go pretty similar to the mainline series for a while, just with Yor being more conflicted about her feelings due to her thinking Loid’s soulmate passed away. It has some very palpable angst, but the last chapter is honestly a really sweet note to end on, I always get giddy reading it. It even has Yor realizing Anya can read minds, and it’s tied with a fic further down on the list for my favorite takes on how that plays out.
“And Wondered Why They Never Had The Chance To Lose You?” by OrcPaladinArthur — Teen Ratings, Graphic Depictions of Violence
This one, at least in my opinion is easily the darkest on the list, and the most violent. It starts with Loid getting shot in the head (non-lethally) and Anya being kidnapped by the scientists who experimented on her, and the rest of the fic is Yor working with WISE to get her baby back no matter what. So far, it’s 36 chapters long, and Yor learns the truth around Chapter 11 (we don’t get the full scoop on that until Chapter 13, and that chapter absolutely fucked me up in all the right ways when I first read it). It’s messy and emotional and the fallout is massive. This fic isn’t over yet, but the past few chapters are most definitely building towards the endgame, so I feel confident that this one will be completed! My only huge content warnings are that Yor goes full Kratos on a lot of bad guys and Anya gets hurt a lot by the scientists (not overtly graphic, but if child abuse is a trigger for you, you might want to skip a few chapters). It’s one of my favorite fics in the fandom and I can’t wait to see how it ends!
“peeking out” by glacialdawn — Mature Rating, Author Chose Not To Use Warnings
This is actually a sequel to another fic by glacialdawn called “hidden” that deals with Loid learning Anya can read minds. I honestly recommend reading both because they’re incredible and they make me feel a million things (“hidden” only has a Teen rating, so don’t worry about anything graphic in there. Only reason I didn’t list it on its own is because it’s an Anya reveal for Loid, not a Twiyor reveal). The gist of “peeking out” is that Yor gets seriously injured on the job and passes out right as she makes it home. She gets hospitalized and she’s fine, but by the end of the story, Anya’s revealed herself to Yor as well, and Loid and Yor have all but outright told each other their real jobs. This fic is admittedly much more focused on Yor and Anya than on Twiyor, and the Twiyor reveal is a bit understated, but it’s so good I couldn’t not recommend it. Absolutely a must-read. The only content warnings that might apply here is severe injury for Yor (not overtly graphic, but she does have a near-death experience, so there’s that).
(And yes, this is the one tied with “person of interest” I alluded to before.)
“Dancing In The Dark” by EnragedPineapple — Mature Rating, No Warnings Apply
This fic takes place shortly after the big reveal, as Loid and Yor don’t really know how to interact with each other anymore, but they attend a gala and end up talking through everything that’s happened. It’s based on this lovely piece of fanart by aerequets, and the tension is so palpable and the payoff hits just right.
“The Last Days of Operation Strix” by Whateverawesome — Explicit Rating, Author Chose Not To Use Warnings
This one’s got it all. A 41 chapter, 117K word story detailing the end of the series and all the emotional twists and turns that come with it. If you’re looking for a novel-length story to sink your teeth into, this is one of the best in the fandom. The identity reveal is messy and a lot of chapters really twist the knife in terms of angst, but it ends up a positive note and it wraps everything up nicely. The identity reveal itself is actually only a little over halfway through the story, and it’s a huge turning point for the direction the story goes in, so if you’re looking for an especially dramatic take on it, this one cannot be passed up. It also has quite a bit of 👀 going on, so if you’re looking for some Twiyor spice, you’re in the right place.
I admittedly had more to say about some fics than others, which isn’t super fair of me, but I really do recommend all of them. All but one of them are completed (and even that one is almost over as is), and I’ve gotten a kick out of all of them! I hope you enjoy reading these!
