Twiyor Thoughts!! (Spoilers for SPY X FAMILY Mission 80)

This chapter really got the ball rolling for the next prominent arc, but I wanted to dive into Loid and Yor’s subplot and give my two cents on it because I’m absolutely loving the direction this is going in!

Honestly though, I love how adoring WISE agents are to Twilight and how they see how attached he is to Anya. It could have very easily been the more detached and coldness that Twilight initially started out with.

*MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD*

Yeah, I think everyone at WISE just find it extremely funny the one spy they’ve worshipped for so long gets bamboozled by a 6 year old gremlin child. And that Twilight ‘in action’ on a mission involves him getting koala-ed by his daughter.

Twilight is also breaking all the Spy Rules with Anya, but WISE seem to let him and in Sylvia’s case, encourage it. As you mentioned, it’s cute seeing Twilight go soft, but also seeing The Man Who Knows Everything be complete clueless (?)/ in denial adds a whole new dimension to how they see him.

Operation Strix makes the spies at WISE see Twilight as a human being rather than just a legend, at the same time when Twilight himself is learning the same. He’s not the cold and detached weapon he’s made out to be, but a man with a soft and gooey center who can care after all.

But also, again, because it’s very funny watching Twilight be a flailing mess.

something thats been bothering me is how people are suddenly expecting twilight to be able to drop everything he knows to be with yor and anya. as much as id also love for him to he able to leave his spy self in the past, the truth is, he’s been a spy for so much of his life that even if he were to retire from being a spy, he’s not going to be able to leave that life completely. he’s learned these things to keep himself alive. he isnt going to be able to unlearn them that fast just because he cares about anya and yor.

this is why im frustrated seeing people say that he doesn’t care about anya because he didn’t show affection the way they wanted him to when she got of the bus. i understand most people are making jokes and some of them are funny, but some people get so wrapped up in the idea of the forger family being real that they forget about what loid’s character is really like. do you really think someone who has been a spy for so long is going to suddenly drop that because he cares about someone? especially twilight? the best spy there is? no, he isn’t. and besides, we know he came running back and probably would have done something if he really needed too.

and yes, i too wanted him to hug anya as soon as she got of the bus, but he’s a spy. he said it himself. it would be suspicious if Dr Loid Forger was suddenly able to make it back fast enough.

he shows he cares though because he says he’ll make her favourite dinner, which might be a small thing but even that can be appreciated when coming from someone who is supposed to have no attachments to other people.

like i said, i know most people are just joking but i wanted to add my own opinions on this whole thing anyway! :)

Can someone recommend some twiyor identity reveal fics with angst but a good ending 🫶🏻

I have been called. I must answer.

I’m gonna sort this by ratings just so you’ll know what you’re getting into with each.

if i sing, will yesterday come back?” by angelsmoonlight — General Rating, No Warnings Apply

This one is a pretty unique take on the identity reveal compared to how a lot of other fics handle it. It’s written in the first person from Yor’s POV, so it also pretty different on a format level from a lot of its peers. The premise is that Loid has up and vanished without a word, and Yor is rightfully pretty upset about that. She keeps hoping to hear from him again, but it isn’t until she goes in his room for the first time in months that she finds out what’s going on. I won’t go into more detail than that, but it honestly got me a little misty-eyed while reading it. Absolutely worth a read.

It will come out a rose by a rose” by Talik_Sanis — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply

This fic revolves around Yor patching Loid up after Twilight had a run-in with the Thorn Princess. It plays a lot with the way Yor’s mind works as she tries to unravel everything she’s learning, and how both of them dance around the topic without addressing it outright. The prose this writer uses is always a delight, and this one is one of their best. A top recommendation of mine for sure!

Say You Love Me (And I’ll Tell You The Truth)” by peachycarat — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply

Yor starts to realize how she really feels about Loid, only for things to complicate themselves with the big reveal. The first chapter is Yor’s POV up to the big reveal, and the second chapter is Loid’s POV as they desperately try to hide each other’s identities from The Garden and WISE. It has plenty of angst, but there’s plenty of levity that keeps it balanced out. Can’t beat a great hurt/comfort fic!

In Love With the Distance” by Newt — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply

This story actually starts right with the big reveal and Twilight being forced to flee after his cover gets compromised. Most of the fic is told through deciphered messages between Loid and Yor after they get separated, with the two keeping each other up to date on what’s going on and dancing around the fact that they’re in love with each other and Loid needs to get his ass home already. Chapter 16 and 17 are probably the hardest I’ve laughed at a fic in years, and no fic in this fandom has made me scream “LOID YOU STUPID SON OF A BITCH” as hard as this fic has made me around 2/3 of the way through it. It’s one of the only epistolary fics I’ve read in this fandom, and it’s such a delight from start to finish. Would absolutely recommend giving it a shot.

Ad Infinitum” by LetTheBodyFall — Teen Rating, No Warnings Apply

Yor sneaks back home severely injured and locks herself in her room. Loid picks up on something being wrong and starts tending to her wounds while trying to shield Anya from seeing her mother in such a state. The parts with Anya especially really twist the knife, so you’re definitely getting the angst you signed up for with this story. It ends on a really sweet note, though, and the banter between Loid and Yor at the end is perfect.

person of interest” by suchmadness — Teen Rating, Graphic Depictions of Violence

More often than not, I’m not huge on soulmate AU fics, but this fic is a wonderful exception. In this version of it, soulmates can write on themselves and it appears on the other’s skin. Yor never got a response from her’s, so she goes on thinking that her soulmate just isn’t interested in her. Things go pretty similar to the mainline series for a while, just with Yor being more conflicted about her feelings due to her thinking Loid’s soulmate passed away. It has some very palpable angst, but the last chapter is honestly a really sweet note to end on, I always get giddy reading it. It even has Yor realizing Anya can read minds, and it’s tied with a fic further down on the list for my favorite takes on how that plays out.

And Wondered Why They Never Had The Chance To Lose You?” by OrcPaladinArthur — Teen Ratings, Graphic Depictions of Violence

This one, at least in my opinion is easily the darkest on the list, and the most violent. It starts with Loid getting shot in the head (non-lethally) and Anya being kidnapped by the scientists who experimented on her, and the rest of the fic is Yor working with WISE to get her baby back no matter what. So far, it’s 36 chapters long, and Yor learns the truth around Chapter 11 (we don’t get the full scoop on that until Chapter 13, and that chapter absolutely fucked me up in all the right ways when I first read it). It’s messy and emotional and the fallout is massive. This fic isn’t over yet, but the past few chapters are most definitely building towards the endgame, so I feel confident that this one will be completed! My only huge content warnings are that Yor goes full Kratos on a lot of bad guys and Anya gets hurt a lot by the scientists (not overtly graphic, but if child abuse is a trigger for you, you might want to skip a few chapters). It’s one of my favorite fics in the fandom and I can’t wait to see how it ends!

peeking out” by glacialdawn — Mature Rating, Author Chose Not To Use Warnings

This is actually a sequel to another fic by glacialdawn called “hidden” that deals with Loid learning Anya can read minds. I honestly recommend reading both because they’re incredible and they make me feel a million things (“hidden” only has a Teen rating, so don’t worry about anything graphic in there. Only reason I didn’t list it on its own is because it’s an Anya reveal for Loid, not a Twiyor reveal). The gist of “peeking out” is that Yor gets seriously injured on the job and passes out right as she makes it home. She gets hospitalized and she’s fine, but by the end of the story, Anya’s revealed herself to Yor as well, and Loid and Yor have all but outright told each other their real jobs. This fic is admittedly much more focused on Yor and Anya than on Twiyor, and the Twiyor reveal is a bit understated, but it’s so good I couldn’t not recommend it. Absolutely a must-read. The only content warnings that might apply here is severe injury for Yor (not overtly graphic, but she does have a near-death experience, so there’s that).

(And yes, this is the one tied with “person of interest” I alluded to before.)

Dancing In The Dark” by EnragedPineapple — Mature Rating, No Warnings Apply

This fic takes place shortly after the big reveal, as Loid and Yor don’t really know how to interact with each other anymore, but they attend a gala and end up talking through everything that’s happened. It’s based on this lovely piece of fanart by aerequets, and the tension is so palpable and the payoff hits just right.

The Last Days of Operation Strix” by Whateverawesome — Explicit Rating, Author Chose Not To Use Warnings

This one’s got it all. A 41 chapter, 117K word story detailing the end of the series and all the emotional twists and turns that come with it. If you’re looking for a novel-length story to sink your teeth into, this is one of the best in the fandom. The identity reveal is messy and a lot of chapters really twist the knife in terms of angst, but it ends up a positive note and it wraps everything up nicely. The identity reveal itself is actually only a little over halfway through the story, and it’s a huge turning point for the direction the story goes in, so if you’re looking for an especially dramatic take on it, this one cannot be passed up. It also has quite a bit of 👀 going on, so if you’re looking for some Twiyor spice, you’re in the right place.

I admittedly had more to say about some fics than others, which isn’t super fair of me, but I really do recommend all of them. All but one of them are completed (and even that one is almost over as is), and I’ve gotten a kick out of all of them! I hope you enjoy reading these!

I hope Yuri realize how shitty the organization he's working for. He always wanted to make a better and peaceful world for his sister to live in, but clearly the way SSS do things goes against what he's aiming for.

I feel really sad for the briar siblings, both of them are naive and doesn't really understand what's happening in the world bc no one was there to teach them but themselves, so they're easily manipulated and exploited, sure yuri is smart, but he's more of a book-smart.

Avatar

Briar siblings are puppets :/ they’re powerful assets and I hope they will realized how the organisations are just exploiting them

The sad thing is that most of the adults in SxF are treated as a means to an end.

The key difference between WISE compared to The Garden and SSS is that WISE agents seem to be at least partially aware of that. Twilight and Nightfall and Sylvia are all pretty upfront with the fact that Westalis has more skeletons in its closet than it’s willing to admit, and the nature of their jobs as spies undertaking political subversion of a sovereign nation is ethically questionable on the best of days.

The Garden and the Secret Police, though, feed their personnel a lot more mythology than WISE does. It’s all done for “the good of our nation” and every act they ask their agents to commit that might be morally dubious is written off as being done to “the enemy.” Sometimes that means terrorists and crime lords and corrupt officials, but sometimes that just means anyone who threatens the status quo.

WISE is no moral bastion in the storyline, but most of its organization knows what they’re doing is reprehensible; they just think it has to be done. Whereas their Ostanian counterparts are fed a lot of dogma and propaganda to keep them obedient.

out of every member of the forger family, yor will be the most impacted when loid reveals his mission and the role she played in it. the little confidence yor has was built by the reassurance she receives from loid and the validation she gets from anya. she will still believe anya, of course, but unlike anya loid is an adult that knew what he was doing all along—loid is a spy and a skilled liar. she has no reason to believe anything he said. that scene where she's drunk and goes, "you said i was pretty, was that just a lie?" is just a preview of how small and insecure yor can get when doubting him.

(the angst will be amazing to witness.)

I can't explain it, but all of Billy's "wtf is this little girl going on about" faces are basically all of Twilight's "wtf is this little girl going on about" faces. Anya just brings out the Dad in every dad.

On a more serious note, Billy Squire looks suspiciously like an older, more rugged Loid, and I think that’s on purpose.

Endo’s always been pretty good at avoiding “same face syndrome” in his art (at least for the most part), so having a character like Billy look so similar to one of the protagonists feels like a deliberate choice to me.

From my vantage point at least, Billy is either a) a reflection of how Loid would have turned out if he never met Franky and kept his need for revenge as his highest priority, or, much more likely, b) what could happen to Loid if he lost Anya. He would become despondent, disheveled, and lose sight of his true mission.

I don’t think it’s some sort of “one bad day” face-heel turn nonsense that The Killing Joke made so popular. Twilight’s already lost a lot and he’s bounced back. But Billy is what happens if Twilight finds meaning in the Forgers… only to lose them too, just like everyone that mattered to him from when he was [REDACTED].

For the post-reveal twiyor moments, do you think Loid would ever suggest renewing their vows as a way of showing that Yor that she’s the only one for him until the end?

Avatar

oh definitely! i love the idea of twiyor having an intimate but very informal vow renewal. if there's one thing about me, i hate like... any traditional forms of romance (like weddings, formal engagements, blah blah, which makes twiyor literally perfect for me because i get to write the most oddly romantic scenarios and they'll be in character) plus i think the lack of formality, the fact it's just them makes it more real. their entire relationship started as proving that they were real to everyone around them. having their first real vows be in the privacy of their home, just the two of them, shows just how much they love one another - that this beautiful, amazing relationship they're built is no longer something of fiction

there's one day where yor happens to be more quiet than usual, and loid immediately recognizes it as odd. he keeps an eye on her, trying to see if she's just having an off day or if there's something actually wrong. by the time the evening comes and yor is getting ready for bed, loid can tell that something is on her mind. so as he watches her stand in front of the bedroom vanity, taking out her earrings, he slips up behind her. he massages her shoulders gently to help her relax, watching her lips part in her reflection. after a few minutes, he moves his hands from her shoulders and wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her back into his chest. he hugs her close and drops a kiss to her exposed shoulder. she's wearing one of his long sleeved white shirts as a nightgown. one of the v neck ones so the collar is falling off of her shoulder since it's so big on her. her hair is down and it's soft and silky. she looks beautiful.

he murmurs against her skin, "what's on your mind, love?"

yor leans back into him, tracing circles around his knuckles on her stomach. she hesitates before asking him, "if... if we hadn't met the way we did - starting our relationship with a fake marriage - would... would you have still fallen in love with me? would we both be here, right here, right now?"

loid doesn't know where the question is coming from, but he pulls back from her body, turning her gently around to face him. "where's this coming from, yor?"

she suddenly looks a little embarassed, like she feels stupid for even thinking about it. he can tell she's avoiding his gaze, so he delicately cups her cheek to angle her head towards him. he's smiling softly at her, reassuring her that he doesn't think it's embarrassing. he just wants to know how she's feeling.

so yor says, "i just... i was thinking about how much of our relationship has been a coincidence. meeting at the tailor shop, you needing a fake wife, me needing a fake boyfriend... i can't help but wonder if falling in love was only because of it. that if we'd met under entirely different circumstances, you would've never wanted me. that maybe you'd want someone more like you, someone like fiona."

and he takes her hands in his, presses a kiss to her knuckles. he shakes his head as he tells her, "you're my whole world, yor. you and anya are my everything. my girls. i fell in love with you because i am in love with you. and if we'd met under different circumstances? i would've fallen in love with you just the same because i love you."

yor smiles at that, peering up at him with so much love. he lets go of her hands, taking her waist instead to pull her closer as he whispers, "and i assure you, i would've never fallen in love with fiona - or anyone other than you for that matter."

she looks a little unconvinced for a moment, but she tosses the words around in her mind, finally finding a part of herself that trusts thats true. she nods a little, a silent way of telling him she believes him and loid smiles.

loid pulls her into a warm hug and she practically melts under his touch. he murmurs, "you're the only one for me, in this lifetime and in any other."

she hums and nuzzles closer.

loid adds, "i love you."

she smiles to herself and says back, "i love you too"

they're quiet for a moment, just content holding each other. but loid eventually pulls back to ask. "would you want to renew our vows?"

and she looks so shocked and confused. so loid explains how they never got to have real vows or a real wedding so if she's interested, he'd love the chance for them to write their own vows and share them to each other. they talk it through, what that would look like, and they agree to do it.

they decide on something extremely private and informal since that's the whole point of their vow renewal. it's meant to represent their real relationship, not the one they've had to prove to others that it's real. so they spend the next week or two writing their own vows, frantically closing their notebook whenever the other comes in the room so there's no peeking (it's cute. it's so fucking adorable how giddy they are about writing their vows).

and once they're finished writing them, later that week they get franky to babysit anya so they can have a date night. it's nothing crazy, just going out to dinner and having a few drinks, maybe doing for a walk in the evening to watch the sunset and to star gaze. it's simple and sweet. but when they get home, they change into their pyjamas, yor wearing one of loid's shirts as a nightgown, loid wearing a t shirt and plaid pj bottoms. their hair is down, loid's is a little messy from the way yor has run her fingers through it.

they sit on their bed facing each other: loid's legs crossed while yor sits with her ankles linked, her knees up to her chest. she looks so cute like that.

they're each holding their little notebooks, they're both nervous and excited to share their vows. they have a little awkward moment of "you go first" "no you go first" but eventually they agree that loid will go first.

they share vows for the next little while, both of them crying and grinning by the end of it. they wipe each others tears and share so many kisses. loid is fairly certain he's never grinned so widely in his life and yor has never felt so loved. it's just perfect and theirs.

(they do also end up having a small living room wedding ceremony so anya can be the flower girl. franky is the officiant.)

the first time the forger’s go to the beach post reveals, yor wears just a simple black bikini with one of her large sun hats and loid cannot for the life of him stop staring at her. he’s sat on the beach blanket, under their umbrella while yor kneels in the sand, helping anya build a sand castle. yor can feel his eyes on her the entire time. when anya runs to the water to fill up her bucket for the moat, yor takes the opportunity to look over at him. she just says a warning, “loid” and he smiles innocently, reaching out and grabbing her waist. he pulls her into him, pressing a kiss to her jaw and wrapping his arms around her fully. he pulls her down so they’re laying on the beach blanket beneath them, snuggled together with yor’s head on his chest. but before they can get too comfortable, anya dumps the bucket of water over their (mainly loid’s) faces and says “papa and mama are flirting” and promptly grabs yor’s hand, pulling her up and dragging her back over to the sand castle. loid is too stunned to speak and yor is just giggling so happily

Avatar

can you imagine during twiyor’s love confession, loid basically tells yor that he wants her and anya and their life together as a family, but if he wants to keep helping the world, he can’t be selfish and have them. he has to choose continuing on as twilight. yor tells him that he’s done so much. he’s spent most of his life thinking about others, the world, taking the weight of world peace on his shoulders. and she tells him that he’s allowed to choose himself this time - for the first time, in whatever way that is. and loid just breaks and softly says, “you. you and anya. that’s what i would choose. if i put myself first, that’s all i’d want.”
