So I found this CD on the street today on my way to work, right? So I decided I’d bring it home and listen to it.

And it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.

LOL at all the people comparing this to ‘80s / ‘90s anime openings. My dad, who grew up Orthodox Jewish, flipped his shit when he heard the battle theme for Final Fantasy VI because it resembled Hasidic music. What is even going on, Japan?

Well this is kind of a revelation. This missing half of the equation.

Prog Rock + Hasidic tunes = 90s JRPG battle music.

OK but this post led me down a rabbit hole and I learned Hasidic music is really popular in Japan so I doubt any similarities to game / anime music is a coincidence. Holy shit u guys.

i’m glad this has resurfaced w/ v interesting commentary!

Every day i think about those black musicians whose songs were made into covers by white people and now everyone thinks that these are the originals. Youtube comment sections are full of people like "is this what it feels like to find out you're adopted?" instead of celebrating and promoting the original creators of the songs.

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

Little Eva - Loco-Motion

Martha & The Vandellas - Dancing in the Streets

James Ray - I've Got My Mind Set On You

Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog

Robert Knight - Everlasting Love

Erma Franklin - Piece of My Heart

The Family - Nothing Compares 2 U (written by Prince)

The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love

The Supremes - Keep Me Hanging On

The Top Notes - Twist and Shout

Lord Creator - Kingston Town

The Paragons - Tide is High

Commodores - Easy

And here's an entire playlist with songs by black artists covered by The Rolling Stones:

In Super Mario Odyssey, during the two battles against Madame Broode, Mario must repeatedly capture her pet Chain Chomp named Chain Chompikins to deal damage to her. While capturing Chain Chompikins, an extra layer of rhythmic barks is added to the music; this is hard to hear both due to the abundance of sound effects in the battle and the fact that it is not possible to have Chain Chompikins captured for an extended time. Here is a full loop of the battle music with the barking. Main Blog | Twitter | Patreon | Store | Small Findings | Source: myself, files extracted from game data
