The most important thing to remember watching 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984) is that it’s not 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). It’s a continuation of the story, but it’s not the same kind of movie. It doesn’t have the opaque symbolism, timeless music, and meditative beauty of Kubrick’s masterpiece. It’s more emotional, urgent, and overt. The idea gets bigger and the stakes get higher. The tradition of wonderful spaceship porn continues. The acting is great. It doesn’t share the same special place in my heart as the 1968 classic, but I love it nonetheless.
