People have asked if the “Into the Unknown” collectible figure will arrive before Christmas. Unfortunately, because permission to sell these was given only recently, we won’t be able to make that deadline. Ain’t that just the way?

However, if you were hoping to give this collectible as a gift, I’ve designed this gift placeholder card to present your loved one to tell them about the gift they will receive!

Keep in mind we are not yet at the minimum number of orders to go ahead with the project, so you might want to have a back up gift just in case. I will know for sure sometime next week whether we have enough orders to make this happen.

Preorder info HERE.

If you’d like to know more, please email me at [email protected]

Thanks!

Frog Building.

Jason Funderburker is coming along nicely. The first photo is a simple render in Blender. I haven’t yet learned texture mapping, so the colors are just roughly blocked in. He’ll be looking back over his right shoulder in the final paint.

There B&W photos are of the actual 3D prints after sanding and polishing. Just have to glue the pieces together, clean up the seams, and paint this sucker!

Skullship update 7/17/2017

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve had any news about the Skullship project. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make these as reasonably priced and as high in quality as possible for the past several weeks.

I had molded and cast a few of these myself, but the quality wasn’t what I was hoping for and it was just too time consuming, so I decided to get some help.

A friend in the toy business put me in touch with an overseas manufacturer that was willing to do very small runs with a chrome finish and even color packaging for less than $100 each plus shipping.

Needless to say, this was a very exciting development. It also became clear at that point that I needed to get permission from Disney since it is their intellectual property. I thought that because I had seen similar small projects being allowed like crew t-shirts and toys that it wouldn’t be a big deal.

Silly me…

Disney’s Permissions department replied with an impersonal form letter denying my request and giving no further guidance as to how to obtain permission.

So that’s it then. I’m sorry to say that I won’t be able to sell these to anyone. I haven’t given up completely on trying to make this happen, but it is pretty unlikely at this point.

I guess that’s what you get for trying to play by the rules. My bad for not foreseeing this at the very start. Sorry for getting anyone’s hopes up.

Looking on the bright side, I learned a ton about what it takes to sculpt and produce items like this and I also made some great manufacturing connections for future projects! I’m already working on a few things (no IP issues with these) and I’ll be posting WIP pics in the coming weeks so keep an eye out for them!

LORD HATER de MILO.

Rough initial 3D print just for trouble shooting purposes and to see how the shapes are working. Too much support needed under the chin on this one, so I’ll be printing the head as a separate piece next time. Lightning bolts need a little beefing up as well. And yes, the final will have arms!

I reblogged this post from my new page, #skulptduggery which is where you can find all my 3D work related content from now on. My BG design type stuff will continue to appear here on #christsirgiotis so be sure to check them both out!

Dude, the 3D printing thing you've been doing is spectacular. The Skullship looks absolutely AMAZING, and I'm really excited to see how the Hater model's going to look when it's finished. The post of the Skullship said something about messaging you if you're interested in having one, and I don't know if that's still a thing, but if it is, I'm all over it. Will you be making a bunch, and selling the ones you create, or making them to order, or how do you think you're going to do it?

Thanks! I’m still trying to figure this thing out, having never done anything like this before. I’ve priced this out to a few places and I also have a friend in the toy business who is checking with his overseas contacts for costs. So far it’s looking like the only feasible way to have these made at an affordable price (under $100 each?) is if I order a huge number of these, like in the thousands. That’s highly unlikely at this point, so I think I will probably make a limited number of these myself and sell them with the chrome finish as art pieces at a premium price TBD. I’m also considering having a number available as unfinished, unpainted casts that people can finish and paint themselves for a lower price. If I do that, I’d love to see posts of all the different painted Skullships! Anyway, it would be great to get as much feedback as possible as to what most people would prefer, so please let me know!

I've found that you really can't judge a 3d model's proportions well on the screen, so it's best to do a rough test print first. You also get a better sense of how best to break the piece down to separate elements which will print and cast most easily. Still need to model the details.

Skullship Cast Complete! (Kinda…)

So here’s the result of a whole bunch of trial and error learning all about mold making and casting. Lot’s of time, material and effort spent to get to this point (see the bottom photo for all of my failed attempts!), but I’m reasonably happy with how this thing turned out. I’m still not completely satisfied with how the side pipes look because of how the seams tend to misalign, so I will probably make a different mold for those to correct that. Anyway, I think I finally figured out how to make a bunch of these things. Thanks to all those who gave me encouragement and advice along the way. If you think you’d be interested in having one of these for your very own, please message me. In the mean time, I’m off to the next challenge–figuring out how to chrome this thing!

Well that was a $100 lesson in how to mess up a mold and a cast! Lots of problems--air bubbles galore, seams don't line up perfectly, and for some reason, the main piece is still a little gooey in places even though I let it sit overnight. Oh well, at least I learned a ton, so I'll give this another go. This time I will do each one as a two piece mold, with extra air vents and I'll get an experienced friend to help. Yup...

Here goes nuthin! I'm about to pour the molds for these. Last time I made a mold was in art school and I think that was plaster of Paris. This time I'll be using a silicone rubber called Dragon Skin made by Smooth-On. Pot life is about 8 minutes and it should set in a little over an hour. On the main piece I've added air vents made from coffee stirrers to prevent bubbles from getting trapped. The larger drinking straws are going to be the pour spouts for the casting material. Hopefully, this will be a successful first attempt, cause Dragon Skin ain't cheap!

If at first you don’t succeed…

So at about 12 hours in, the nozzle clogged and I had to stop the job (the one on the right). For the next attempt, I saved some time and material by having it print hollow and smaller and it came out much better (the one on the left). The fin sagged a bit at the end, so I’m gonna try this one more time with the fin printing as a separate piece. The side pipes will be printed separately as well. I may start a new tumblr page devoted to 3D sculpting and printing, so if anybody is interested, please let me know!
