thinking about how jon was literally set up to blunder, being thrown into a job position everyone knew he wasn’t qualified for, so he had to scramble to prove his worth to everyone including himself, being dragged into supernatural experiences where he takes the blame for any of it happening when it was all so far out of his control. he had a target on his back since he was a child. everyone he cares about either died or left or wants him dead. except martin. and that one thing, that one special relationship where jon is loved and he can love back, they are thrown into an apocalyptic hellscape that jon can only blame himself for, and rather than reveling in this newfound love, they have to use it as a crutch to even muster the willpower to keep going. i’m gonna vomit

a little addition to this comic

the thing that kills me about Martin putting tapes on the buried coffin is that he accepts Jon’s non-humanity more than Jon himself does. Jon’s still trying to believe that he’s human so much that he tries to bring himself back with his physical body, even though he’s been freely using it as collateral for years by this point. But Martin sees Jon, knows that his tie to the Eye is stronger than his tie to his body and loves him enough to bring him back anyways. S4 is WILD dude

Panel 6: "Basira," Martin exclaims. "You don't un... it's..." he stutters. "Basira, it's mine." Martin puts pressure at the last word. Basira looks at him bewildered. Panel 7: Jon walks by an open doorway and hears Basira and Martin arguing. "Basira..." Martin says but is interrupted. "Nuh-uh, you can't touch me," she says. "Give it back," he demands. "No, now I have to read it," she responds. "Ouch! Give me th-" Martin gets interrupted again. "Is this about J-" Basira tries to ask but is interrupted by Martin screaming no.

Panel 8: Jon stands in the doorway with his hand on his hip. "It totally is about..." Basira can't finish her sentence because Martin screams out her name. "What are you doing?" Jon stops them and asks. Panel 9: Basira is sitting on the desk holding the notebook away from Martin and pushing him away with her foot. Martin is trying to reach for the notebook. They both look startled and are both frozen in place looking at Jon.

Panel 10: Basira and Martin try to look relaxed. She is still sitting on the desk, the notebook lying behind her. Martin is standing beside her with his hands clasped in front of him. "Nothing!" they answer Jon's question in unison. End ID]

thinkin bout how Martin is a big dude. he's just a big dude. a large lad. and it's fine. it's not a big deal. it's not dwelled upon, not mocked, just referenced every now and then in a neutral way. it's not even part of his Tragic Backstory(TM) he's just a big guy!! he's a big dude and I love that for him!! a big dude!!

The thing about jonmartin is that Martin wants to be a romantic, he loves poetry and probably watches romance but for him it is a fantasy, a silly game he plays. Martin is at his core very cynical. Things don't work out for him so he doesn't really belive in romance, it is a pretty dream but that's it. He is pratical and realist. Dating Jon he has to remind himself it is real and he actually struggles with romantic gestures, it is something he has to remind himself to do, to remind himself he can do even and honestly who even has the energy and what if Jon doesn't even like it?

Jon on the other hand wants to be cynical. His first coping mechanism was pretend the things he was afraid of weren't real and goddam if he isn't afraid of love. It didn't really work to him so far so it's easy to pretend he doesn't care. But he is a romantic at heart. He saw love and he read about it and he has enough evidence that it is undeniable. And to be honest Jon was always to much a bunch of mushy feelings hidden in a grumpy (and bitter and afraid) trench coat. Dating Martin he has to hold himself so he isn't too much. He plays the grumpy unromantic guy at first. But he just can't stop giving flowers and planing dates (this is the guy that saw a theme park on a fear domain and considered how he wanted to take Martin to a romantic ferris whell date [until he discovered Martin was afraid of them]) and making all the silly things one does when in love.

TR: Martin is deep down very cynical about love but wants to/pretends to be a romantic and Jon is deep down very romantic but wants to/pretends to be cynical about love.

No but this is so real tho

One of the greatest things about them is that they're the foils to themselves/each other's presentations. And of course they never come out and say it, but they're 100% the unreliable narrators of their own lives. I'm sure if asked, Jon would say that of *course* Martin is romantic, and Martin would kneejerk say Jon? Romantic? No. (Martin might change his tune if he thought about it for a second, but Jon definitely wouldn't.)
