king falls fans be like: king falls wasn't even that good, it wasn't even half decent, it wasn't good at representation and it wasn't very respectful to fans or really anyone - but goddamn i fucking miss it

You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.

Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…

…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

Adding onto this: characters who are so deeply repressed that they don't even realize they're not fine, or at the very least not supposed to be fine. Characters who do tell you about a situation they're in that should be bad, but instantly laugh it off saying they can handle it (spoiler: they can, in fact, not handle it). Characters who laugh with you and listen to all your woes and much later you learn that they were actually going through something at least equally bad at the time, but they wave it off and don't want to speak of it. Characters whose main coping mechanism seems to be "don't think about it" on endless loop.

Basically, the fictional embodiment of the "this is fine" dog.

i think we all have that one piece of media we like that’s basically “i love this thing, but i dont think everyone should watch this thing and would not categorically recommend it to other people i know, this thing has a lot of problems and i am the first person you should ask if you want to know a long list of criticisms, but i REALLY ENJOY THIS THING” its like holding up a can of trash to everyone else and saying “you are a reasonable person and you would not enjoy touching this garbage and i value that about you” and then pouring it out on the ground and rolling around in it yourself

Listening to KFAM makes me feel so conflicted.

One part of me realizes this show is problematic and there are things that should not be supported. Their representation is poor, storylines sometimes weak, and the creator's and actor's (Kyle and Trent) attitude towards criticism is very aggressive and harmful. Not to mention the show might not be coming back.

On the other hand I fucking love this show. I have fallen head-over-heels for the characters and would die for them. I really enjoy a ton of the storylines and themes of found family and repairing relationships. A ton of the jokes are really funny and the music is downright spectacular. To say I don't like listening to kfam is a lie.

It's so hard to reconcile these two parts. I just want to listen and enjoy kfam, yet to do so neglects the problems in it. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge a piece of media is problematic while also enjoying it?

Idk why, nor will I. But I like kfam and I want to like it. I realize it is problematic but that still doesn't stop my love for the show.

In my day, we listened to Caleb Michaels have a breakdown to his therapist and we liked it! And if we were extra good, Night Vale would bring out the Mara Wilson for us to all sit around and cheer! 

spiritually, we have rocking chairs and are shaking our fists at noisy kids down the street

i love that ben arnold is king of oversharing and exploding his emotions everywhere bc his body is too small contain all the love he has, and then his best friend sammy is just like "im sorry everyone.. knowing my favorite color is simply..Too Personal...i havent voluntarily expressed how i feel in five years and i intend to keep it that way..my honorary brother doesn't know what state im from..anyways lets take some callers!"

I firmly believe that ben did not see the inside of sammy’s apartment for the first 2 years they knew each other but also sammy knows the name of every kid who went to ben’s preschool and their favorite snack

It appears two months ago a reddit user posted to the King Falls AM subreddit asking about the state of KFAM and what is happening. Kyle responds with skirting around the subject and how the cast and him are free to work and write on other projects. The original poster (OP) then comments over 1.5 months later on how it took tactic to even get Kyle to respond to which Kyle calls him entitled and how human beings make the show.

I should also note there are 37 comments on the post but most of them are fans being frustrated. Also, the comment from 15 days ago is Kyle’s most recent post (as far as I know, there may be deleted comments or posts).

Last update was June 15th, almost 4 months ago. You said October was going to be when you had planned on coming back prior to Covid. Now we hear of internal splits; Kyle makes a cryptic post about “That’s all Folks;” Kyle is working on a new project draft; King Falls get referenced in past-tense by the creators; Nobody is addressing the issue, like at all or ever; Many cast members are going off for a improv book club reading podcast; KF Patreon has been discontinued for most the year. Just be honest with us. What’s going on? The show ever coming back or has a decision been reached to end it at 100? Can somebody in charge just be straight with us fans? Silence & no news can be worse than bad news. If some decision has been made, don’t string us along with false hope. Be honest.”

His response is: This was said somewhere in the thread here but I’ll reiterate: Everything is weird for everyone not just the King Falls family. We released the last update in June and that’s still very much where we are. Re additional projects: We don’t have the cast locked down so why wouldn’t they work on additional projects? These talented folks are masters at what they do so they should take every good opportunity to get out there and continue killing it with their craft. I hope every single project does fantastically. Same with me. If I am unable to write King Falls AM because of the uncertainty of when we could return, why would I sit waiting when I could try to tell more stories? I pride myself on being open and available but very rarely do I dip my toe in these waters. At the end of the day, I appreciate the fact that everyone cares so much that they just want to know what’s going on, but we are all in the same boat and there’s a fine line between wanting to know what’s going on with a podcast and intentionally trying to stir stuff up.

I think their hearts are in the right place, genuinely do. it doesn’t help that the fan base for podcasts is so interactive with its creators - i doubt anything like we’ve seen from them would occur if it was say, a TV show. but Kyle especially needs to let go of his ego a bit.

The biggest thing for me is that you’re two white men writing LGBT+ rep—we understand you’re going to make mistakes, but you have to learn from those mistakes, not put your fingers in your ears and hum the “haters” away *eye roll*
