As someone who was politically conscious for the Carter, Reagan, Bush the Elder, Clinton, Bush the Younger, Obama, Trump, and Biden Administrations, Today's Democrats are nowhere near as regressive and conservative in the aggregate as policies championed by either Bush I or Bush II's administrations.

Anyone selling that snake-oil is demonstrating political and historical illiteracy, or is myopically focused on a small degree of overlap when it comes to foreign policy and the defense of this nation, or is deliberately lying to you to spread propaganda delegitimizing our system and depressing your desire to vote so that Trump and his Project 2025 cronies will win and institute their authoritarian Christofascist regime.

Yep. Was a kid during the W years. Holy SHIT do some people seem to have memory-holed those ones, even people who lived through them. A handful of fun:

--W worked hard to try and get Congress to set in motion the process of getting a constitutional amendment against Gay Marriage ever being legalized. ELLEN being out of the closet and having her own show was a big deal back then.

--worked hard to get Congress to pass the most permissive version of the Patriot Act possible, allowing spying on American citizens and their communications (yeah, that's been controversial since the start! part of how Rand Paul, yes that one, got into office was being against it!)

--No Child Left Behind, which FUCKED schools by introducing two stupid metrics: every kid MUST be on grade level or your funding is cut (no exceptions, special needs, traumatic brain injury, no parental help, nada, NO EXCEPTIONS), and the school's scores must continually improve or funding is cut. I went to a very good elementary school that routinely scored as high as was possible. Funding was cut since we did not "improve." Funding cuts then led to the schools getting worse (no duh) and this led to more championing of private schools, exactly as planned

--LIED to our allies to get them to join us in Iraq. This literally destroyed our credibility on the world stage along with Colin Powell's career (he'd been considered a VERY trustworthy man beforehand). Took Obama forever to get us out of that war AND get any credibility back internationally (the latter of which the GOP scorned as an "apology tour")

--Appointed both Alito and Roberts to the SC. Fun fact, Alito was the SECOND choice, he'd wanted Harriet Miers but she was so unqualified she eventually withdrew her nomination because even the GOP wouldn't vote for her extreme self! And then look who got thru under Trump...

--Deferred payment on BOTH wars he started to cook the books so the debt only kicked in under Obama, which Obama was blamed for. This also started the current debt crisis since there'd been a surplus under Clinton

--caused the Great Recession via MASSIVE deregulation of the housing and stock markets, proceeded to blame the people given the mortgages they couldn't pay for instead of the swindlers who gave them said mortgages AND blamed anti-discrimination laws for "making" the poor banks gives out bad mortgages to poorer people

--the Bush Tax Cuts, which Obama was forced to make permanent by the GOP congress as part of a deal, ALSO massively drove up debt while being a giveaway to the wealthy

--started Drill Baby Drill which Trump is still running on today. hell, in Conservative areas you couldn't mention Climate Change (then called Global Warming) at ALL because it was insulting to the president and his agenda to do so

--Claimed we faced a so-called Axis of Evil in Iran, N. Korea, and Iraq. We are probably lucky he managed to only go to war with the last one, but it drove up tensions with the other two to a level we'd not see again til Trump kept poking Kim to see if he'd nuke us

--Was infamous for claiming he "saw Putin's soul" during a summit when the war in Chechnya was still ongoing and later we'd have the Russia-Georgia war

--W is known for being very charismatic and personable despite his unfitness for office otherwise. HE dislikes Trump and even called his 2017 inauguration speech "some weird shit" to Michelle Obama. He has pointedly never been seen supporting Trump in ANY public way. That is NOT NORMAL. Former presidents are often ambassadors for their party and potential successors. What's normal was Bill and Barack at the DNC. Not a PEEP from the Bushes at ALL about Trump. It'd be like the Obamas all sitting out several election cycles.

--Post-presidency, the GOP has done all they can to act like he never existed, to the point of conservative voters often blaming Obama for things he did to the point of "where was Obama on 9-11?" (answer: not even a Senator yet!) being a common refrain from GOP voters.

--also later investigations have essentially shown he was a daddy's boy being led around by his father's friends to "avenge" HW Bush's loss and perceived failure to "go after" Saddam post-Gulf War, so....yeah. Even without 9/11 they'd have found a way to get into Iraq

--was in some ways a proto-Trump with the whole "if you're against the President and what he does, you're un-American" thing being in its first form under him. That then metastasized to the Trump-worship we have now and the right's concept of "real America."

HELL NO are today's Democrats ANYTHING like that!

If you think all this isn’t bad enough, he also started the TSA.

Yes, that TSA.

The one that basically strip-searches you for “national security” but has proven to be less effective than regular metal detectors and is basically there as an intimidation tactic.

I mean yeah, it’s pretty easy to see that today’s Democrats don’t resemble the Bush-era GOP on many social issues like LGBTQ+ rights, education policy, or national security, but there’s still valid concern over the party’s centrist moves, especially on economic, foreign, and, as of late, immigration policy. And it’s good for people to point that out.

What a lot of people feel is that while the Democratic Party’s progressive policies on issues like climate, labor rights, and LGBTQ+ protections are significant, it often feels like they’re just meeting the minimum expectation rather than pushing for bold, transformational change. For example, the Inflation Reduction Act includes historic climate initiatives, but the bill still falls short of more comprehensive climate action, like eliminating fossil fuel subsidies or setting stronger emissions caps. Similarly, while Biden joined striking workers on the picket line, it hasn’t yet translated into extensive legislative change for labor rights that would empower unions and protect workers on a larger scale. You can even see this when you look at Biden’s handling of the railroad workers’ union. He stepped in to avert a strike and pushed through a deal that included pay raises but didn’t fully address workers’ demands for better conditions and more paid sick leave. A lot of unions felt he chose corporate interests over the needs of the workers, which is pretty frustrating when you’re hoping for a stronger pro-labor stance from the party. On immigration, Democrats have recently shifted towards more conservative positions, even supporting aspects of the border wall and increased enforcement. This move has disappointed people and see it as abandoning a more humane approach to immigration reform. Instead of leading with compassion, the party is adopting more hardline tactics that echo some GOP policies.

On top of that, policies on military spending, foreign intervention, and the cautious approach to healthcare reform reflect compromises that align closer to conservative goals than progressive ones. This shift might not fully align them with Bush-era Republicans, but it does create frustration among people who see this as a party playing defense rather than advancing bold change.

The ratchet effect also plays a role here—each time Republicans push policies rightward, Democrats often meet them halfway instead of fully counterbalancing. The fear here is that this is going to move the political center toward the right over time, leaving progressive goals for healthcare, economic justice, and climate action out of reach.

I agree that it’s important to acknowledge the progress on social issues, but there’s also a shit ton of space to critique the party’s rightward movement in ways that impact policy. People should speak out about it.

Also bear in mind democrats this year have removed opposing torture, the death penalty, and solitary confinement (exception being pregnant inmates) from their party platform.

They had no trans speakers at the DNC this year for the first time in over a decade, multiple party leaders and spokespeople are blaming trans people for democratic losses and Harris gave a bullshit answer that she’d “follow the law” on trans healthcare with no specifics.

Regarding immigration and the border, democrats including Harris raced to the bottom against republicans on being “tough on the border” and touted copycat policies of trump. Even down ballot dems followed the party’s lead and bitched about the border. Also, a reminder that Biden boasted about building a “tech wall” and getting Mexico to pay for that (that just means they got Israeli technology used on Palestinians)

Also are we forgetting that they touted getting the endorsement of Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzales (torture memo writer), and Reagan staffers who somehow aren’t dead yet.

All that and add on the whole sending American arms and troops to protect genocidal apartheid maniacs who still get out money despite getting caught in 4k gang raping prisoners and having right to rape riots…

Yeah I don’t thinks it’s a stretch to say democrats are trying pretty hard to be as bush era republicans as they think they pull on the sycophants of the party.

When I was a very suicidal trans activist in Texas, Benjamin Sisko saying “sure, you would [die for your people]. Dying gets you off the hook. The question is: are you willing to live for your people?” changed and possibly saved my life. It’s up there with “if we are going to be damned, let us be damned for who we really are” from Picard. Star Trek not only shows us a better world, it teaches us how to make it there

planned obsolescence is out of damn control. there was once a time that a bedframe, any simple bedframe, could withstand the weight of two 300-pound men going at it obscene style, as nature intended. it was furniture made by REAL carpenters. now the darn things can barely withstand a sensual threesome between 3 scrawny lesbian twinks. with the march of capitalism driving the profit incentive over efficiency, now we all have shitty overpriced bedframes and everyone has to suffer the effects of homophobia.

If Harris loses, please try blaming real issues (Republican-driven voter suppression and intimidation tactics; billionaire-funded Trump-PAC’s and propaganda machines; a broken electoral system that hinges presidential elections on a dozen or so states instead of a simple popular vote; or the Democratic Party’s fumbled opportunities to respond to things like the corporate greed driven cost of living crisis, the housing shortage, the medical debt and healthcare accessibility crisis, the ongoing climate disaster, and the ongoing genocide in Palestine) instead of doing the Right’s job for them by blaming folks like climate protestors, Antizionist and pro-Palestine activists, Black and Brown people, jaded millennials living paycheck to paycheck, and tumblr users with an audience ⅛ the size of the average Christofascist MegaChurch Congregation.

its almost as if trumps loss in 2020 was in-fact a bellwether for the continued rise of neo-fascism... its almost like, just maybe, when a liberal party responds to reactionary ideologies with centrism and militant nationalism it doesn't exactly offer a counter to fascism but instead offers nutritive soil for its roots to grow... you could almost argue that a state that extracts its power from violent exploitation will inevitably fall to fascism... perhaps, just maybe, this is the inherent trajectory of a nation built on genocide... weird...

The problem is that America has beaten down its people for decades and gotten them weak and desperate and now promises a way out, a way to transcend and rise above, through selling out their fellow man. They encourage contempt and hatred as one way ticket to not being included with the masses being death marched to poverty or imprisonment or whatever other bitter end surely awaits the people they’re told are beneath them. An embarrassingly large chunk of white men are just straight up nazis these days as a way to dissociate from the rest of the carnage around them, even if they’re broke and uneducated and from an impoverished background themselves. They’ll vote for and align themselves with anything for a taste of power and control that makes them feel a little less helpless. The same goes for minorities. They’ll punch down if they think it’ll get them somewhere, even if in reality they’re punching sideways. I don’t know what else to say, really. Everybody is so incredibly hateful. We are a loveless, disrespectful nation. We are so spread thin by our government that we would sell each other out in a heartbeat for an ounce of relief. This is what we’ve come to.

It’s not even about Trump at this point. He’s gonna get in office and do whatever he does and it’s gonna be a mess but whatever. This is indicative of deeper problem. This is just the ugly consequence of the already present reality in this country that we all just despise each other. There is no solidarity and there is no love. Trump being in office or not doesn’t change the fact that America is a breeding ground for violent hatred. Trump has given people a shining example of how to give in to the worst parts of your human nature and make it the problem of everyone around them. I don’t even know what we’re supposed to do about that. I don’t know if that’s something we can come back from. And if anything COULD be done about it, Trump certainly wouldn’t do it. Honestly, Kamala probably wouldn’t have either. We are so deeply fucked.

However, I must say, if you voted for Trump, I hope that peace never finds you. Instead, I hope clarity strikes you someday like a clap of lightning and you have to live the rest of your life with the knowledge and guilt of what you’ve done and who you are as a person.

Love yall. Shit is so bleak but the world keeps spinning until it doesn’t, I guess. We can’t count on the government for literally even a shred of progress or hope so just keep up the good fight in your own personal lives. That’s literally the only thing to be done at this point. Stay safe out there. Maybe buy a gun.

tbh foreign policy was listed as the least important issue for exit polls, arab and muslim heavy states like minnesota and michigan are not what lost harris the vote, and jill stein got under like one percent. everyone making this about leftists who didnt vote either pro or against is making something out of basically nothing. americans are fundamentally boring and apolitical and above all completely self centered. they do not give a fuck about the suffering of people in palestine or ukraine. they just know that gas was cheaper 4 years ago or whatever. the amount of incredibly normal people i know who arent even right wing so much as just sort of uneducated and incurious about any issues / had no interests beyond like big ten sports or binge drinking or getting ahead at work and getting rich are voting for him not people who agonized over a single thing ever. this is unfortunately a non issue bc americans dont care about anything but themselves, you just happen to be around small groups of the exception

i mean this in the meanest way possible, if you as a leftist, in an attempt to 'punish' the democrats, either didn't vote or voted for a third party, go fuck yourself. you chose your own self righteousness over actually doing good.

Go ahead and start blaming anything except the campaign. Go ahead. Blame everyone except the people who are supposed to do their fucking jobs and earn your fucking vote. Blame everyone except the people with the actual fucking power.
